Maya's window opened as Lucas climbed in, and she looked at him questionably, running her hand through her messy curly blonde hair. "Lucas, it's 2am. What's up?" She yawned, looking at the boy tiredly.
"I needed to talk to you." Lucas said, closing the girl's window and sitting in her own window seat. She joined him, and met his glance once more.
"You sound serious. What's wrong?" She asked, resting her hands on her purple cotton pajama pants.
"Look, I've had this thought in my head for weeks now. And I can't seem to stop it from spinning around my mind." Lucas began. "I just feel... I feel like we haven't talked about some things that had happened back in Texas."
Maya had no hint of astonishment on her face, for she'd been waiting for this to happen. "I know. I've been waiting for you to do it."
"You've been waiting for me?"
"Well, this wasn't going to just go away. At this point, it has to be talked out." Maya nodded, an odd calming smile on her face. But why was she smiling? What was going through her head? Lucas might've seemed fine on the outside, but he was a nervous wreck on the inside.
"Well okay." Lucas nodded. "So um, what happened between us,"
"I get it huckleberry. It didn't mean anything, you were confusing your feelings for me to Riley,-"
"No. No, that's not it Maya. Is that what you've been thinking?"
Maya lowered her eyebrows a notch, and said, "Lucas... It's not what I think. It's what I know. I know you like Riley. It's constantly written on your face. It just took me a while to see the chemistry... That's all." A broken smile appeared on her face.
"Maya, that's completely wrong. You're saying that to hurt yourself." Lucas said. Maya didn't speak, she just listened to him this time. "I know how you feel, I know how Riley feels, but you guys don't know how I feel. I don't want to hurt either of you." He sighed. "But right now, it's just confusing. I mean, we're growing up. And things are changing with all of us. I love Riley, but not in the way I thought for a really long time. I love her like a friend. She's an amazing person. But what I feel about you, I know that it's real." Lucas explained. Maya felt a lump in her throat, and she took a breath. "I don't quite know how Riley feels right now, but if I talk to her, I will know." He finished. Maya sighed, and pushed her knees up to her chest lazily.
"This is a mess." She buried her face in her knees.
"Tell me about it."
She looked back up at him, and blinked tiredly. "So what do we do at this point?"
"I don't know." He stayed silent for a moment. "How do you feel about me?"
Maya looked up at him, incredulous. "You know how I feel about you. Why would you make me repeat it?" She rolled her eyes.
"I want you to say it to me. I just want to know that it's real." Lucas got uncomfortably close to the girl, and her heart beat faster.
"I... Can't." She looked down. "We can't. Not yet." She looked back up at him. "We're still growing up. And even if we did go out, we wouldn't be able to talk to each other anymore."
"We wouldn't be like others. I wouldn't let that happen. Nothing would change, no pressure." Lucas responded.
"That's a good exception." She smiled tiredly. Lucas started to lean in but Maya quickly stopped him.
"But we need to know each other more. And I feel like it's best if we're really good friends." She blurted. "Best of friends." She smiled awkwardly.
"Maya, you're doing it again."
"What?"
Lucas took her hands in his own. "You're pretending that everything is okay, but you know in your heart that it isn't. You know the situation is okay. Why do you keep stepping back?"
Maya's eyebrows lined in frustration. "Lucas. Riley is my best friend and she cares about you." She began to seep back to her ways again. "Regardless of what our friendship is, it'll hurt her. And I don't need her hurt." Lucas sighed as her eyes teared. "Lucas, you know how I feel about you, and I know how you feel about me, but... I don't think this--can really happen." Maya felt her heart beginning to crack.
"I don't want to lose you."
She sniffed, and looked back at his glance.
"Me neither." She inhaled, and let out a shaky breath. "But we'll wait." She nodded sadly. "Even if it takes forever." Maya added, her voice raspy from being tired. His heart tightened, for a great sadness had just spread around his chest like a cold. Lucas nodded, and she attempted at smiling. He leaned and hugged her tightly, and she hugged back, looking blankly at the wall. He squeezed her gently, and savored the softness of her hair and the vanilla scent on her neck. They pulled apart and Maya was crying. It was noticeable if you really looked into her eyes, like Lucas did and had been. "We'll wait." She nodded, trying to plaster a smile on her lips. Lucas stared at her longingly, and eventually climbed out of her window. Maya walked to her bed and sat on it, a tear rolling down her cheek.
How long was forever going to be?

Omg. This was so sad.
