Her eyes blinked open and she looked around the school all of a sudden. She didn't know how she got there, she was just there. She looked down at her clothes, and she was wearing oddly dark colors. A black shirt and grey jeans weren't her every day clothing.
She looked down the hallway and it appeared to look longer than it was. The lights were dim and there wasn't a sound to be heard. Nervous, she walked inside the classroom that was supposed to belong to Mr. Matthews. There were some kids that looked familiar, and she sighed in relief as she sat down. "Hey, where's Mr. Matthews?" She asked Darby. She looked back at Maya strangely.
"Who's that?" She asked. "We have Mr. Cunningham...?" She raised her brows and Maya furrowed her brows.
"Darby. This is Mr. Matthews class." Darby pointed at the board and Maya turned herself around to see a teacher that she had not known write a lesson on the board. "Who are you? What's going on?" Maya interrogated.
"Maya do you need to go to the nurse or something?" Farkle smirked. "This girl is crazy." He told his friends that Maya never had seen before.
"Farkle... What the-"
"Uh.. She's is talking to me. Missy, control your pet." Farkle's nose scrunched up in disgust.
"Farkle." Maya scolded. "You better watch what you're saying. How could you say that to me?"
"Maya don't even bother. It's not like you ever asked him that before." Missy sighed. Maya looked at her with almost surprise. Missy Bradford didn't look like the Missy Bradford. Her hair was cut shorter, and she was wearing a black sweater and black leggings.
"Missy... What clique are we in again?" Maya tried to act normal, but Missy looked at her with confusion.
"We're goths? It's completely obvious. We've even got matching bracelets." She smiled. Maya was completely freaked out.
"Where's Riley?" She asked, looking around the room.
"Your enemy? She's a total bitch. Why would you look for her?" Missy raised her perfectly plucked brows.
"Because... I don't know, I was wondering." Maya's stomach wasn't even close to at ease. "And Lucas?"
She smiled. "Probably with the other jocks, praying on some other girl in our grade." She chuckled.
"Lucas? Lucas Friar?" Maya was almost incredulous.
"Yeah. Are you okay peaches? You seem ill." She felt her forehead.
"Peaches?" Maya sucked in a breath. "I uh.. I'm gonna go to the bathroom."  Maya quickly ran out of the room. She ran in the hallway but suddenly bumped into Lucas Friar. He caught her suddenly by the shoulders. "Wow." She breathed out, looking at him. "Thanks."
"Um, it's fine I guess." And as he was about to take off, she called him back.
"Lucas.. What's going on? Everyone is acting so weird... Including you."
"I don't know what you're talking about." Lucas rolled his eyes. Maya felt her heart drop.
"Lucas. Before I opened my eyes today, you and I were together, Riley was my best friend, and so was Farkle. You're telling me you don't remember any of this?" Maya walked closer to him.  He sucked in a breath just like she always knew he'd do, and walked closer to her. But suddenly, Lucas furrowed his brows, but suddenly, it was almost like something shocked his arm or something, because he flinched and looked back at her in a weird way.
"No. No, I don't. You're a freak." Lucas shook his head. Maya's eyes started to gloss, and she lowered her guard a notch.
"Lucas. You need to remember me. You're a Huckleberry." She smiled sadly. Lucas looked at her with almost surprise. She leaned closer to him, almost pleading.
"I don't know why it feels right. It feels like I know you." He said, his voice barely a whisper. Maya smiled softly as he took her hand in his as they stood face to face. She closed her eyes began leaning in, her face centimeters from his, when all of a sudden-
"Lucas! Where are you!" A voice blared down the hallway. Maya and Lucas immediately tore from each other, and Maya sighed for a minute before Riley appeared in the hallway. "Ew.. Why are you talking to her?" She put her hands on her hips. Lucas looked at Maya for a second before walking to her side. She wrapped an arm around him and gave Maya a look of hatred.
"Riley, why are you acting like this?" Maya walked over to her. "You know.. This," she pointed at her appearance, which was completely made over. She wore a purple top that exposed her stomach, and jeans that were too tight for her butt to fit in. She had red highlights in her hair and black makeup surrounding her eyes. "Isn't you."
Riley rolled her eyes and arched a brow up. "You should be saying that every time you look in a mirror, loser." Lucas looked pretty uncomfortable at this point., so he kissed her cheek, mumbled something about going back to class, and walked away.
"Seriously? I don't know what changed with us, but you should be smart enough to know that this isn't you. What happened to the fun and weird you?" Riley glared at her and her nostrils flared.
"No one goes back there. I don't need a pep talk from you." Riley said as she began walking on. Maya glared at her, and pulled her arm back.
"No. We need to sort this out now." Riley seemed taken aback from Maya's aggressiveness. "You need to listen to the right people. I was the right person to hang out with you. I don't even know who you are right now."
"You were never the right person to hang out with. You were a bitch." Riley said. Maya flinched at her language, but let her continue. "Do you even understand how hard it was for me to even change myself? New wardrobe, new attitude, new friends. I didn't need you anymore. You seemed pretty done with me anyway. We're complete strangers now."
Maya looked at her and her eyes glossed again. "How long?"
"How long what?" Riley exasperated, sighing.
"How long have we not been friends?" Maya asked. Riley looked down, and thought for a moment.
"It'll be two years next week." Riley looked back up at her, her glare returning. "Look, just stay out of my way. I can't have you talking to me and making these old weird nice feelings come back. We're supposed to be going different paths." Riley snapped, before storming out of the hall. Maya leaned against a locker, and slid down. No Riley, no Lucas or Farkle; she had no one. Missy didn't even mean anything to her. They weren't supposed to be friends. She got up, and opened her locker. A yearbook fell out of it, and Maya raised her brows as she reached down to get it. She skipped to what was apparently their junior year. Damn, time has gone fast. Riley and Lucas were class couple, and Maya had been known as the freakiest. She rolled her eyes as she flipped some pages. Farkle was known as the class badass. Wow Farkle, what a level up. And then there was a page called "A blast from the past." Which was torn out, but stuck in the back of the book. She looked at the page, and there were many pictures on it. Riley & Maya, the best of friends. Lucas & Maya, favorite couple. She felt her heart drop, for that was when they weren't even dating. It's like this never even happened.
What was she gonna do if it stayed this way forever?
Maya closed the book and stood up. She walked back into class and sat back down. Maybe if she eventually had her friends in the same positions they were in, everything would return to normal.
She looked at Farkle, who was talking to his friends. "Farkle." She called. Farkle turned to her and arched his brow up.
"What do you want?" He asked. Chuckles were heard from behind him.
"Well, the teacher might be teaching Belgium 1831-"
"What!" He exclaimed, and a bright smile appeared on his face. Confused faces appeared all around him. His eyes widened and he quickly glared at Maya. "Uh, I d-don't care. God, Maya. No one likes you." Maya's smirk grew and he gulped.
"When was the last time you did Farkle time?" She questioned. Farkle bit his lip and furrowed his brows. He quickly stood up and grabbed her arm, dragging her out of the class.
"What are you doing?" He asked. "How do you even know that stuff?"
"Because we were best friends." Maya said. He bit the inside of his cheek.
"We are on completely different planets now. Why are you even doing this?" Farkle asked. She looked down, and then back at her friend.
"I think I really woke up today Farkle. Things don't have to be like this." Maya said. Farkle sighed, also looking down. "You were one of my best friends. I never thought our friendship would just end." She added.
"I can't- I'm not supposed to remember it. That's not supposed to happen." Farkle said, his voice cracking. "G-go away, Maya." He backed up. Maya stepped forward, and hugged him suddenly. Farkle's body tightened as she did so, but hugged her back. "Maya?"
"Hmm?"
"I missed you."
Maya smiled, and continued to hug him.
~~
Lucas and Riley walked into the cafeteria, and Maya bit her lip in frustration. There had to be something she could do. Lucas sat down as Riley went to the lunch line. As soon as she walked away, Maya quickly stood up, and wiped her sweaty palms on her grey jeans. It was time for her to get her boyfriend back.
She ran up to the boy, grabbed his arm and dragged him into the hallway. Lucas's eyes widened as she took a breath, flipping her blonde hair back as she closed the door behind her.
"Maya, what are you doing? Get out of here!" Lucas snapped. Maya suddenly walked a step over to him and his heart beat increased. "Maya you can't do that."
"Lucas, this isn't supposed to be this way." Maya said, her voice uneasy. She leaned closer when Riley walked into the room again.
"Maya what are you doing?" Riley asked. "Get off my boyfriend!"
"I'm not exactly with you..." Lucas sheepishly told his friend. Riley rolled her eyes and crossed her arm.
"Maya what are you trying to do?"
"She's trying to get things back to where they once were." Farkle stepped in, half smiling.
"They were never anything. I was never her friend, she was never mine. Or Lucas's."
"You were my friend! You just don't remember." Maya said to Riley and Lucas. "Riley. You were my best friend, and I can even prove it." Maya carefully unclasped her necklace, and it appeared to be a locket. She opened it, and it was a picture of her and Riley, smiling while Maya was laughing. Riley looked at the necklace, tears beginning to fill her eyes. She looked away, and glared at the ground. "And Lucas. You and I were in love." Maya looked down. Lucas looked at the girl, appalled.
"How is that true?" He said. "You're supposed to be a freak." Maya rolled her eyes at his comments, and quickly walked up to him, leaning in and kissing him straight on the lips. His eyebrows shot up and he almost pulled away, but suddenly having a remembrance of the girl, his love for her was reclaimed, and he wrapped his arms around her waist as she pulled away. "You remembered, huckleberry." Maya smiled. Lucas smiled back, leaning in for another kiss, but Maya put her hand in front of his face.
"We're still in school. Maybe later. But why isn't everything back to normal?"
"Maya?" Riley sucked in a breath. "Peaches!" She smiled as she hugged her best friend. Maya chuckled as she hugged back. She pulled away, and they all walked back into class.
"Where have you guys been?" Mr. Matthews asked. Maya, Riley, Lucas, and Farkle smiled.
"Exactly where we're supposed to be."
-------
Her eyes blinked open and she was laying in Lucas's bed, with Lucas at her side. She smiled, and leaned into the back of Lucas, wrapping her small arms around his waist. Maya felt him yawn, and turn to meet her eyes.
"Good morning, sunshine." He whispered as he leaned in to kiss her. She pulled away, and looked into his eyes.
"Promise never to leave?" She asked.
"I Promise. I won't ever forget that."
