Maya avoided the door when the bell rang and sighed at the floor. Her skin was still slightly trembling from before, and rubbed her arms in slight annoyance. "Get a grip, Maya." She squeezed her eyes shut to remain calm and relax her muscles. The bell rang again, disturbing her temporary peace. It's just Lucas, Maya. Why are you flipping out so much? She stood up and walked over to her door, feeling her hand begin to sweat as she turned the doorknob. Maybe because you saw more of him than you thought you were gonna. The door swung open to a half smiling Lucas, his blue eyes immediately pouring into hers like they always have. Except this time they had so much more meaning to them. Maya didn't know whether to slap him or to have him take him in her arms and kiss the life out of him. She hated when he looked at her like that, like she was the only thing in the world that mattered to him. "Hi." He greeted her, leaning on the edge of the doorframe. Maya took a deep breath, a pit forming in her stomach as she nodded her head.
"Hey Lucas." His named stung off her lips, making her ears slightly burn. The last time she said his name, it came out way different than she had been saying it now. Was the blonde thinking too much? Yes, she was.
"This is kind of sufficiently awkward-"
"-yeah, it is." Maya agreed, nodding her head in confidence.
"Look," Lucas began to walk inside as Maya closed the door. "I didn't mean for things to go that far." She sighed and met his desperate guys. "But.."
"But?" She crossed her arms, not knowing whether to feel scared or annoyed at him. Maya was hanging on to every word he uttered.
"I don't regret anything, and I don't believe it was a mistake." Lucas proudly continued. "Whatever happened, Maya, I think it was meant to." The blonde waited a few moments, and let out a small chuckle as her eyes reverted to the ground.
"You don't have to pretend that what we did was emotional. Of course you probably needed that anyway." She smirked, raising a brow playfully. Maya decided to just play everything off and act her most normal so he wouldn't get serious with her, but it didn't exactly work out too well. Lucas took a step closer to her and caressed a strand of hair behind her ear.
"You think I'm pretending?" He asked her softly with a face full of concern. Maya's brows lowered and she shrugged his hand away. Lucas backed up to give them some space again, noting her annoyance.
"I don't care what you thought, Lucas. I wasn't at the right state of mind that night, and things kind of just escalated. Don't take everything too seriously." She felt herself becoming guarded, looking everywhere else but him. There was a mixture of confusion and hurt on the boy's face as Lucas shook his head in denial.
"I don't believe that for a second. Years and years of a friendship with tons of emotion, undeniable emotion, and you say you felt nothing?" Maya didn't respond because she felt herself beginning to choke up. Rushing herself back to her lies, she swallowed uncomfortably as the tears successfully went away. She stared at him finally for a couple of seconds, seeing desperation and hope in his eyes, the same look she had given him that night, even with a hint of love. Before the blonde could even think more about her feelings, she shook them away and focused on the main thing at the point. Maya debated on telling him the truth, she wanted to tell him everything that was on her mind like she always had. And Maya was definitely certain that Lucas was surprised at her guarded attitude.
"Yes." Was all Maya uttered, the words leaving her mouth feeling like knives to Lucas's chest. She saw Lucas's soft expression harden as he expressed an exasperated sigh.
"Well, if that's how you see that night-"
"Look Lucas, it was a one time thing. Why won't you let it go?"
"Because I'm in love with you." He responded harshly, a cold look in his eyes. "I always have been."
Maya exhaled shakily and leaned back against the edge of the table, afraid she might fall from how fast her heart was beating. "I-can't do this." She managed to say.
"You can't even look me in the eyes right now." He shook his head in frustration and desperation. "Maya, if you can look me in the eyes and tell me that you have no feelings for me whatsoever, then I'll leave you alone." Lucas stepped closer slowly. Maya was staring at the floor and felt tears swell up into her eyes again. She bit her lip and refrained from letting him see her cry.
"I-" She slowly choked out. The boy's eyes poured into hers, hanging on to every expression and every word. The girl lowly responded again, a straight look forced upon her face. Straightening her posture and talking right through her broken heart, she bluntly replied, "I don't." Lucas blinked a couple of times, almost dumbfounded by her answer. The next moment, he attempted a nod indicating he was okay with this. He let out a shaky breath and shoved his hands in his pockets, but walked out immediately after. Maya felt her heart sink in her chest as she backed up, walking over to the kitchen table and sitting down. Glancing down to her stomach, she gently rubbed it as she took a certain stick out of her jacket pocket.
"It'll save him the pain." Maya murmured to herself, placing the stick down as tears filled her eyes. She wiped her eyes and stood up from the table, looking back down at her stomach. "We can't have him know."
