"Maya, why do you make fun of me?" Lucas asks, a couple of feet away from her. God dammit. She looks at the fire and her heart begins to speed up quite nervously, knowing her feelings were floating up to surface step by step. Trying to gather her nerves and calm her heart beat, she looks up at the boy in front of her and opens her mouth shakily saying,
"Because you're easy to make fun of!"
Lucas looks back at the girl who has just stood up and blurted out an unoriginal response. He mentally gives some credit for her excuse, reminding himself to sarcastically thank her for that later.
"Then stop." He responds, waving his arms in an incredulous way. But the girl ignores his hysterical movement, as if she's completely blocking out his dialogue, talking over his own. And now she's the one waving her arms out like a mad woman.
"Because you're, a Huckleberry. Because you're a Ranger Rick-" She could go on and on with his nicknames, but she has to yet come to a realization that her comments were not helping her feelings.
"Would you stop?" He cuts her off as she begins to get closer to him, the air suddenly beginning to grow serious as the build up continues. She knows this but she continues to ignore it, and yet again attempts to make the air all innocent and light. But Lucas still wasn't having it. Maya could sense this, and frustration began to build up inside of her.
"Look, if I had feelings for you, don't you think I'd just come out and say it?" She exclaims in his face as she walks even closer to him, their hearts beating fast and things beginning to grow. They could both feel the outdoors heat rising; but that probably could be the fire heating them up. She feels her arms tighten but she loosens them as she attempts to keep cool. She couldn't mess this up, Maya could not reveal her feelings. No matter what, Riley deserved him.
"Well I don't, so what I do say is ha-hur!-" Maya gently leans forward, about to do her classic line when Lucas suddenly cups her cheeks in his hand, leaning down but not yet touching her lips. The two stand there in silence as Lucas feels his heart once again pounding in his throat; feeling his stomach twist and turn as his hands remain at her cheeks; her eyes looking directly into his, looking for an answer, a spark, a question. They could hear the fire crackling as they stood like that, and crickets making light noises like urges to have them finally kiss. And live happily ever after.? She looks down at his lips, her eyelids half open as if she was going to collapse from the amount of whatever in the air. He sighs, opening his eyes as he began to back away from her.
Maya, being dizzy from that sudden amount of stress just put on her, just stares at him in awe as she slowly asks,
"Why did you do that?" And he has to reflect on why he did the unintentional action, not having a clue on why he put his hands in her hair and pulled her face dangerously close to his. There was passion right in front of his eyes, but he couldn't think, unknowing of what passion even meant. Slowly, he lets his hands fall to her soft blonde hair, and releases the grip he had on her.
"I don't know... I just wanted you to stop!" He awkwardly exclaims. Maya raises her brows in worry. There was a mix of awkward but there was so much scary. New feelings that were currently being surfaced and explored at this very moment. God she likes him so much that even because he said that lame shitty excuse, she could tell that something was going on here. Maya knew somewhere along the way that moment had purpose. She knows this because her mom tells her normally to not mistake an obvious moment as anything else. So she promises her she'll remember, and oh look here they are.
"You... Couldn't think of another way to stop me?" She ponders, her body going to mush as she realizes this may be a good thing. But seconds later she freezes in fear as she recalls her best friend Riley; Riley who says she didn't have those feelings for him and continuously claims that she stepped back for her so therefore things had to be all peachy between them. Whether Riley's assurance was true or not, this still scared Maya to death.
"Not at the time, no!... I'm.. Sorry?" Lucas replies, his mind filling with confusion and huge question marks. What was he apologizing for? Didn't he like her? Or no wait, didn't he like Riley? But why was this so confusing? Riley and him.. They were like a summer's rain. In some kind of romantic Disney movie, they were made to be together. But this wasn't a movie, nor did he have those thoughts that he was supposed to about the brunette. Instead, he screws himself over and unknowingly has these feelings for the other girl. The main's sidekick.
"You don't have to be sorry, Huckleberry. Of course I like you." Maya pauses, sighing as she looked back into the boys eyes. "You're a good guy."
She feels her heart heavy and her head light as she begins to walk some inches away, her hair gently blowing back from the wind as she sits on a log. "If you got hurt, I don't know what I would've done." Lucas sighs and feels for the girl. He joins her and sits down too; his eyes never leaving her.
She looks at the ground, and glances up as their eyes meet and she swears she could feel something from just eye contact.
"I don't want to have any more secrets from her."
Maya slowly says, a sad expression painting upon her face. Lucas looked down and stayed silent. The crickets are no longer talking but whispering really, and the fire's crackle begins to simmer down. They both had a lot to work on in terms of feelings and relationship.
