But What She Didn't Know

Yes, Maya, Riley, and Lucas were all in a triangle. Maya hadn't ever denied that. And she didn't deny the feelings Riley had for Lucas, she was very much aware her friend liked him. She also admitted how much she hated this triangle, and how much she wanted it to end.
But also, Maya hated all the secrets she had been keeping. She was telling the truth when she had told Riley that she liked Lucas. That she stepped back, and had no intention of stealing him from her. Maya didn't want to lie about those little things she hid at the back of her mind. She didn't want to go to Lucas's house with a guilty conscious anymore. This secret was eating her alive. She was kissing the lips that weren't supposed to be kissed until the decision was made. And the person who kissed her back wasn't supposed to like her. It felt so wrong, but so right. They fit so right together, and it was simply undeniable at this point that the two were so into each other. Only, it was hurting them each time they pretended they weren't together, that Riley was still in the middle of this, that Lucas had yet to make a decision. Because truthfully, he already made the decision. He made it when he first leaned over and kissed Maya when they were alone, when they took pictures all over her phone and Riley had yet to find out, and each time his hand caressed with hers when they walked past one another in the halls.
The first time this happened was when they were studying together late at night at Topanga's (Maya's mother told her to lock up when she was done.) Maya was helping Lucas with his Spanish homework, both of them leaning down at the table which remained the unfinished work. Maya was looking down at the paper, while Lucas was stuck looking at her. When she noticed this, she turned to meet his glance, and suddenly, his lips touched hers, quite passionately. The girl was surprised at this, but at the same time had been waiting for a moment like this since Texas. Guiltily but her mind empty, she responded to him, immediately setting her hands on his cheeks. After a few breathless kisses, he gently pulled from her, both catching their breath. And exchanging one look afterward, they knew what this meant. They made an agreement that it didn't happen, but they also couldn't tell Riley.
The second time was when, the same night, Lucas walked Maya to her apartment. She stared at the door, and back to Lucas. And with those two actions, she pushed him against a wall, and kissed him just as passionately as he did her, holding him by his collar. It was no make out this time, just one small innocent kiss. And when she gently ended it, there was no lustful look anymore, but a look of love that replaced it. He mirrored her exactly, and his arms wrapped around her waist as he immediately kissed her again, wanting the warmth of her mouth covering his. And from that moment, they knew what they were getting into. It just had to stay a secret.

Maya uncomfortably sat at the window with her best friend in silence, for they were supposed to be in decision mode. For Riley, it was a decision. For Maya, it was made up. And like everyday, Riley asked her the same question. "Still like him?" And Maya would answer, "Yes. You?"
"Yes."
And it would drag the story longer and harder to handle. Sometimes when Maya and Lucas would hang out, she'd lean her head on his shoulder and whisper, "This is so hard. How are we still doing this?" And he would turn to her and say, "Because something this special, is worth the wait." He would kiss her cheek after, and they'd resume holding hands. Maya didn't want to crush Riley, but keeping it in longer would crush her even more. They were in too deep.
He caressed the side of her face as his lips resumed on hers. She'd kiss back, but then pull away the next moment, breathing out against his mouth. "Why do you like me?" Maya asked nervously. He'd look into her blue eyes and smile contently, almost confused as to why he'd ask that. He loved everything about her.
"Because you're beautiful, strong, and full of knowledge. You intrigue me." She'd bite her own lip, and shyly glance down as a blush appeared on her face. He'd lift her chin and she'd meet his eyes. "You seem nervous."
"I'm really into you. That's why I'm nervous." Maya gently brushed her hand with his, and he took it. "I don't think I can lose you. Whatever happens."
"You won't." He said assuringly, his hand gently grazing the side of her face. She smiled and sighed with relief on her face.
Today, if the writer is being truly brutally honest, sucked. Up to a point. Maya was miserable as Riley went on about her confused feelings for Lucas. Maya's eyes averted nervously at the ground, feeling her words threatening to choke up her throat. And as she was in a daze, the question kicked her in the face again. "Still like him?"
She choked up. Tears flew from her eyes. "Riley. I'm in love with him."
Riley's eyes widened. "W-hat?"
"Riley I've been in love with him for a while. I can't do this. It's killing me." She covered her face in her hands. Riley stayed silent. "I know, I know I taught you to always fight for what you want and what you believe in." Riley's eyes slowly filled with tears, and inside, Maya felt her heart sink. "Riley.. I.." Her voice stuttered, barely a crack.
"I know."
Maya felt her ears burn in shock and confusion. ".. What?"
"I see it in his eyes, I see it in your eyes. Every time you look at each other." She wiped a tear away. "It's just like my mom and dad. I've been seeing this go on for three weeks. Just the stares. There's no way you kept your hands off of each other for that long.
"Riley.. He kissed me, I kissed him, I.."
"Shh." Maya waved it off. "What you have is irresistible. It's not nearly as light as my feelings for him. They're crush feelings. Or old, rather."
"Old?"
"You think I can make a long speech on Lucas?" Her corners of her mouth lifted just a tad. "I'm only crying because," she wiped a tear away. "You gave me the answer to who I believe I have real feelings with."
"With who?"
"Those speeches were said to give my own self the answer to who I was liking so much. At first, I thought these thoughts portrayed Lucas." She glanced down. "And somewhere along the line of thoughts, I thought of light brown eyes and chestnut hair." A blush formed. Maya could practically sing with happiness.
"Riley...."
"It's Farkle. It's always been Farkle."
"It's Farkle." Maya repeated, her eyes
filling with tears. Riley leaned over and hugged her best friend gratefully.
"It's okay.." She cooed into her shoulder. "I'm not mad at you. Feel in love, feel what you're feeling." She said as they pulled away. Maya too had wiped her tears away.
"You too." Maya replied. "Go get 'em, tiger. Your shy actions don't fool me. If you can be like me for one minute more, what could you do, audacious girl?"
Coincidentally, a moment later, Farkle came through the window. "Ladies."
Riley smiled knowingly at Maya, and she nodded. Out of the blue, a planned audacious act had happened before Maya's eyes. Riley had leaned over and kissed him. Farkle flinched, but immediately melted into the kiss, as if saying he finally found her. Truly in his arms.
She breathed out against his lips, and Riley's eyes remained closed for just a moment before opening them. "T-thanks." He smiled, a sparkle in his eyes. She held his hands and their gazes lingered on each other. Maya smiled at the two, but a moment later, a hand pulled at her wrist, and yelped as she was pulled outside onto the small standing place outside her friends window. As Maya was about to speak, Lucas shushed her.
"Riley's right. You and I find each other simply irresistible." Maya was about to speak as a second attempt, but he hushed her into a kiss as he leaned her against the building. They leaned back afterward.
"Lucas." She caught her breath. "About what I said-"
"Oh.. Yeah that." He raised his brows with a plain expression which seconds later, melted into love. "I love you too."
Maya exhaled happily and satisfyingly as he then had her inhaling again, leaning in this time as if it was their first time kissing. She held the boy closer, cupping his cheeks nostalgically.
But what Maya thought Riley didn't know originally,
She knew.
