Riley and Maya walked slowly down the school hallway to their lockers on an early sunny morning, one in a great mood, the other, not in such a wonderful mood. It was way too early for this shit and quite frankly, in Mays's perspective, there should be a law that school shouldn't even start until twelve in the afternoon. She was definitely sure that every student felt the exact same way if the blonde made some petition and forced everyone to sign it.
It was their junior year in high school and Maya still didn't know what and who she was going to be. Sure, art was always going to be there, but the blonde worried that financially it won't save her when she goes away to college.
So on weekends, besides painting on late Friday nights, she decided to take on something other than that. Which was actually a sport.
That's right, Maya is athletic. It all started when her and Shawn were just playing around in the backyard one day, and they noticed an old basketball hoop from afar. Curious, the two walked over and saw it hanging near her mother's planted pine-needle trees. It looked dusty and hold, looking like it had been there for probably ten years at least. So Shawn gave Maya a look, which confused her.
An hour later, the two were playing one on one, dribbling the basketball around the concrete platform of their backyard. Funny enough, Maya didn't really hate it, but she would never tell a soul she favored something where you'd have to actually move your body and be active. It was only between her and Shawn. After they finished playing, she told him to swear he'd never tell anyone she played a sport and liked it. Nodding with a smirk and a slight chuckle, he replied, "whatever you say." Which brought a small smile to the girl's face.
Noticing herself becoming lost in her thoughts, she realized that Riley was looking at her strangely."Why the long face, Peaches?" Riley raised both her index fingers to the corners of her lips and dragged them down mockingly. Maya smiled and rolled her eyes at her friend.
"It's early. And I'm exhausted." Due to her basketball playing last night. She originally had played on weekends, but Maya actually had played alone yesterday. For about three hours straight.
"Late night painting?" Riley questioned knowingly. Maya felt her insides tense slightly, but nodded in agreement.
"You know me." Maya flipped her hair jokingly. They both walked over to where Farkle, Zay and Lucas were hanging out. All three boys greeted the two with a smile.
"Good morning?" Farkle began with a hopeful smile.
"Yes."
"No." They both answered in unison, making Lucas chuckle in response, and causing Maya to bite the corner of her lip nonchalantly. Zay glanced at the two blondes and stifled back a laugh.
"Yo, Riley!"
Riley turned around to see her smiling father. "What? Yo Riley?" She groaned at him.
"It's hip, right? Come in here. I wanna talk to you about the assignment you missed last night."
Riley blinked. "But you already know why I didn't do it!"
"No excuse, Matthews!" Cory crossed his arms. Riley groaned louder and stomped into her class. Maya chuckled at her best friend.
"Good morning?" She asked Riley before the brunette went into the classroom.
"No!" She shot back before disappearing into the classroom. Turning back to her remaining friends, Maya noticed Lucas was looking at something on her.
"Ahem? My eyes are here, Huckleberry." Maya raised his chin with her thumb. Lucas blushed and ran his hand over his hair.
"No, um, I just noticed something." He took her hand and Maya felt her ears burn. "Your hands are so... Calloused. Like more than just guitar fingers. It's weird."
