It's a Monday morning, and he feels his hands sweating as he stares at the girl's bright face, her eyes sparking blue and her blonde hair slightly ruffled from the battle to get up in the morning. She caresses it and laughs to her friend, probably around the subject of her morning. He smiles as he leans against his own locker. Maya's eyes unexpectedly meet his and he flinches, banging his arm against the locker. Maya's shoulders shrug slightly as he sees her laugh. But he cannot hear due to the distance, so he imagines it. An angelic sound, a vibration from her throat as her head falls back from her laughter. But from his view, it's a small giggle as her eyes go from his to Riley's. At this point in time, they're 14 years old. And everything is new, and the air is clear. That day was a good day as Lucas remembers. Not because of any communication or event, but the connection he and his new crush had made in the hallway. Lucas wonders and wonders on why it makes him so happy, and wonders, wonders about these feelings that he practically woke up with this morning. But this is just the beginning.
~
A year has passed and the two were brought closer, for the blonde and the brunette wanted to be his friend. Of course the brunette sees the heart eyes on her best friend, but she stays silent. Riley sits back and watched the development. The blonde and the cowboy like to tease each other, call each other names, and have this peculiar chemistry that was unfamiliar to many at the age of seventeen. It's a cloudy Tuesday afternoon, and the boy and girl are working on a project that was due the upcoming day. Of course they didn't get much done from the few week opportunity their teacher gave to them. They're currently both writing down ideas for their science project, Maya's artistic pen stroking words onto the paper. There's a bags of lays chips between them on the table. Maya eats quickly and Lucas notices her appetite is a bottomless pit. When they go out to eat sometimes, Lucas notices her favoring in chocolate over vanilla. Like the time she had chocolate ice cream at their local creamery, and the other time she had chocolate covered strawberries at the library. Lucas liked her obsession with sweets. Chocolate was just as sweet as her. Anyway, lays chips. Lucas reaches over as his eyes are glued to the paper, meaning to get a chip from the bag. Just as he's doing this, Maya is reaching for chips as well, but their hands entwine and both feel their cheeks heat as they look up at one another. Lucas notices the pink on her cheek as Maya shyly pulls her hand away, a small smile lingering on her face as she notices his color. Little did she know that her face color matches his own.
~
It's that same Tuesday night, and Maya and Riley are studying. Well, Riley is studying, and Maya is-being Maya. She's being a hippy and playing her guitar on the floor.
"So." Riley says, not looking up from her paper. Maya strums lightly on her guitar, playing the DM chord. She looks up at her best friend.
"So." Riley's lips curve up as she hears her friends response.
"You and Lucas have been getting a bit close, lately." She taps her pencil on her science paper. Maya stops playing, feeling her chest tighten. She plays it off nonchalant, and tries building those things called words.
"We're good friends-yeah." She says, gulping a forming lump after the sentence. Riley's smile grows as she can sense her friends hesitation. She finally turns her head to meet Maya's strained glance.
"Uh huh."
"Uh huh."
"Maya..."
"Riles..."
They squinted their eyes at each other in challenge, goofy smiles on their faces. Suddenly, small words mumble out of Riley's mouth.
"Lucas and Maya sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First-"
"RILEY!"
Riley bursted into giggles as she watched Maya's face turn a bright pink. Maya glared hard at her friend, grabbing a pillow and covering it, falling back on her white carpet. Jesus Christ.
"I do not like-"
"Yes you do! It's painted on your face, Peaches." Riley smiles knowingly at her. Maya can't even fight this.
"You know what?" Maya stands up, and does her little dance. "I, can't, hear you. Badada-da-da-da."
------
After multiple attempts of trying to ask her out and backing down and trying to write it out and messing up, he finally gets his moment to ask Maya Hart out on a date. She politely says yes, and they're both extremely nervous the night of.
It's a clear and warm Wednesday evening. Maya shakily applies her eyeliner, attempting to calm her steady and anxious hand to get the perfect wing. She hates when that happens. Maya calms down as she remembers that he is her friend and that they are okay. That nothing will get screwed up because they know one another very well. Maya looks down at her army-green shirt and black leggings, smiling. She had almost forgotten her excitement.
But he's nervous he's gonna screw everything up. What if he can't hold a conversation, he wonders. What if she isn't impressed by the place he takes her, or what if she flat out gets bored. Ugh, so many thoughts. Lucas tries to clear his mind, rubbing his temples as he looks in the mirror. Lowering his hands, he stands tall and almost proud(?) because he knows that if he meets his own eyeing reflection, Lucas will sweat. And sweating is never good when nervous.
They finally greet each other when it's date time. Maya is smiling at Lucas as they stand outside her apartment. Maya doesn't see the death stare Katie is giving Lucas, but he plays it cool so Maya wouldn't be as nervous either.
He guides her to his car, starting the engine. Before he can begin to drive, his heart leaps. For Maya had rested her hand in his. Lucas exchanges a look with Maya and smiles. He knows everything is going to go well.
And after the date with the slow jazz music, the coffee and the fun.
She smiles as she watches the boy drinking his coffee, and glances at his rapidly shaking leg. Maya realizes he goes crazy over caffeine, and a laugh flies from her mouth. Lucas looks at her and she notices a coffee stain on his blue shirt. She says nothing, but drinks her own French vanilla coffee as the music continues flowing throughout the room.
It ends with an unexpected kiss that the blonde initiates in front of her apartment door. She has him against her, holding him gently by his blue tie she found to like. He pulls away and they both breathe out; their eyes remaining closed for the lingering moment. They murmur their good nights before Maya backs into her apartment; clearly in dream world. Lucas walks down the stairs, almost tripping on the way down and back to his car and again possibly in his own car.
~
It was a warm and relaxing Thursday night, and luckily the girls had off from school.
Of course Riley wants to know everything, and how could Maya not tell her everything? She told her possibly everything that went on during the date, and the little goodnight kiss the two shared before parting ways. But suddenly as she spoke excitedly, the color drained from her face. Riley looks at her in confusion and asks what's wrong, but Maya freezes.
"I kissed him. Riley, this could ruin everything." She informs her, biting her lip hard. Riley runs her best friend's shoulder supportingly and smiles at her.
"It won't. You guys are going forward. It's good for the two of you." Riley calms her down, and Maya takes a few breaths. She nods, tucking a strand of blonde hair behind her ear.
"You're right." She shrugs. "I'm just nervous. When I see him again, what do I say? What will he say?" She wonders. Riley shrugs also, a smile lingering on her lips.
"I think you'll just know. Now, go to him. It's almost 8pm." She waves her friend off to continue her story which was desperate to skip to next chapter. Maya nods, and climbs out of her window.
She climbs into a certain someone's window, and smells his cologne filled room. It wasn't too much, so it didn't bother her. As her left foot sets on the ground, Lucas turns around, and the girl feels her heart skip a beat.
"I.." Maya hesitates, climbing into his room and standing up shakily. No words were passed in their distance, which was apparently growing smaller. Lucas didn't know if gravitational forces were pulling them closer, but they seemed to be walking toward one another. He holds her softly in his arms, taking in her vanilla scent and her newly shampooed hair. They look into each other's eyes and smile. Lucas leans down, about to kiss the girl when suddenly the moment almost gets ruined and he bumps noses with her. They both laugh as the air's thick tension fades away, turning light and innocent. Maya fixes his position as she leans up to meet his lips successfully. Looks like they didn't even have to talk. This was enough for them to know what they were sure of. And when they pulled away, Maya finishes her sentence. "Like you."
"And I like you."
--
The two hang out again on Friday morning. Maya hopes they weren't going to be that corny couple but they couldn't help it. Lucas holds her hand in the hallway that very Friday, and Maya kisses him on the cheek twice between class periods. Riley is happy and disgusted whenever she sees the two because she knows it's so gross that it's cute. The grade votes them class couple (with the help by a big vote from Mr. Matthews and Maya swears that it's rigged.) this Friday before the weekend of spring break, and it's bright and sunny the whole day. Later on, there's a pep-rally and live music outdoors, and everyone is dancing. Lucas surprises Maya from behind and spins her around, pulling her close answer whispers, "Dance with me?" She smiles, And leans her head back to look at his face clearly.
"I don't dance Huckleberry." She says, caressing his arm muscle with her thumb.
"I don't either." He responds, clasping his hand in hers as step by step, they dance in their own slow way. Maya can't even help but find it romantic. He moves left as she does the same, and then back, and to the right. Lucas's face is so close to Maya's that she can smell his cologne that was remaining on his neck.
"Don't dance, eh?" The girl smirks, her other hand on his back. As they dance around and around, Lucas feels like he's floating. That his feet are doing most of the slick work, and his eyes were so fixed on hers. He could barely acknowledge any other beauty in this room. Maya feels as if she was gliding on ice, and not the concrete ground. The wind danced around them, and she feels her hair being braided and lifted as her skirt waves around. It was a slow motion picture of everyone dancing, laughing as the clouds hover above them, drizzle beginning to fall.
She laughs and spins as he twirls her, pulling her close once more as Maya's
grin that Lucas loves, brightens; lighting her whole face. "How corny are we?" She whispers as they two stare back at the creepy classmates who are so obviously stalking them.
"Let's go be corny somewhere else. They're so creepy." Lucas says, his hands remaining on her waist. Riley jumps out of the clump the crowd is in, snapping a picture of the two.
"FACE IT. YOU TWO ARE CUTE." Riley screams, twirling around excitedly. Maya rolls her eyes at her, but blows a kiss at her best friend. Riley pretends to catch it, and playfully makes a love-struck expression. Oh, how Maya loved her best friend.
--
It's the end of Sophomore year, and it's a Saturday afternoon: the annual Spring Fling. Maya smiles at her reflection in the mirror as she smoothed out the sides of her light purple dress and the calm blonde curls running down her back. Taking a nervous breath, she looks at her sun kissed skin and smiles at her light purple eye shadow complimenting her blue eyes and her pink lipgloss making the girl's face brighten. Riley jumps up behind the girl, giggling like the weirdo she is. Her friend was wearing a beautiful pink dress with ruffles at the ends. Riley looks in the mirror, and clips back the beginnings of her brown gentle curls. Maya smiles at her.
"Who are you dressing for?" She asks her friend with a smile playing at her pink lips. Riley quarterly looks at her and a blush paints her face.
"You know, I could still kill you with my pink tips I got freshly done." Her best friend mutters. Maya pretends to be sincerely shocked.
"My goodness, Riles. That might've been the most scariest thing you've said." Maya raises her brows. Riley smiles innocently as she always has, and clasps her hands together.
"And for your information, he's a Minkus. A Farkle Minkus." Riley blushes. Maya gasps and her friend runs out of her room, a blushy -embarrassed mess.
"Look who's the blusher now!"
~
It's a Saturday night that very day, and the two girls walk into their gym auditorium that is now decorated all around. Riley holds Maya's hand in confidence as they approach the two boys, dressed in suits. Lucas walks to Maya, a smile lingering on his face as he holds a corsage in his nervous hands.
"I.. Got you this." He says, shyly speaking. Maya blushes, tucking a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. He ties it softly onto her wrist, and she takes his hand in her own.
"Thank you, Lucas." Maya caresses the side of his face.
"You said my real name." Lucas says, referring to old memories. Maya notices and catches on, her smile widening.
"I've always known your name." Maya responds once more before they walk into the crowd of classmates as Riley and Farkle follow.
Later on that night, after endless dancing (Maya may or may have not took off her shoes and glided in her stockings.), slow moving and lots of food, it was time to announce the homecoming king and queen.
"The ballots are in, and it is time to announce your homecoming king and queen." Cory says over the microphone. Maya and Riley squeal in excitement while Farkle and Lucas roll their eyes. "And now," he clears his throat. "Drum roll, please."
Classmates in the background begin the drumroll, obnoxiously. Cory quiets them after fifteen painful seconds. "And now, your homecoming king is.."
He confusingly looks at his paper. "There's two." The crowd mutters confusingly. He smiles at the paper a moment later.
"Lucas Friar and Farkle Minkus." Lucas and Farkle look at each other and walk on stage.
"And your homecoming queen...s... Are Maya Hart and Riley Matthews." He proudly says into the speaker. Clapping fills the room and the two of them walk on stage.
"Isn't there only supposed to be one?" Maya whispers to Riley as they walk to the center.
"We're queens now. It doesn't matter." Riley smiles. They're both handed a crown and the two girls lift it together, as do Farkle and Lucas. Maya hugs her friend tightly on stage, and crowns Riley.
"You deserve the title." She smiles at Riley, holding Lucas's hand. Riley shakes her head, holding the crown in front of her.
"Your story now." She crowns it on her best friend's head. "Go on." Riley waves to her friend. Maya blushes happily as Lucas kisses her cheek. "You should know that the king and queen have their dance on stage. And plus, this needs to be Snapchatted." Riley runs down the stairs, grabbing Farkle along with her.
Lucas holds out his hand as a proper king would do, and Maya laughs. "Oh god. I am so not fit for a queen." She takes his hand as he wraps his arm around her waist.
"Well, you're fit to be mine." Lucas smiles as they begin to sway, the spotlight dimming on them. How cliché. Maya's face moves close to his, and they have their third kiss ever. He cups her cheek and her lips form a smile against his.
-----
It's college hunting season in December of their junior year, and Maya is sprawled up on her couch, her glasses on and her blonde ringlets in a lazy bun. It's a settling snow Sunday and she's resting inside. She's wearing sweat pants and a tank top, and being simply the laziest person alive. "Sacred Hart... Purchase.. Marymount... So many choices." She mumbles to herself, throwing pieces of popcorn into her mouth.
"NYU, Fordham university.." Lucas continues, walking in from her kitchen. "Got any food?" He opens the fridge, spying some ginger-mint cookies Maya's mother made. He smiles and grabs two, walking into the living room and holds one in front of Maya's mouth. She opens her mouth and he sets it on top of her tongue while Lucas laughs.
"Anyway, how come only colleges in New York? Don't you wanna travel?" Lucas asks, sitting on the couch as well, letting her rest her feet over his lap.
"Yeah, but New York inspires my art. I wanna stay where I'm comfortable." She smiles tiredly, caressing her messy blonde bun. Lucas nods, laying his head on the couch pillow.
"Interesting."
Maya made a face. "College talk isn't that fun." She scrolled down on some websites, feeling sincerely indecisive. "I doubt I could get into any of these colleges, anyway." She muttered under her breath. It was Lucas's turn to make a face.
"What do you mean? You have so much potential, Maya." He tells her sternly, raising his brows.
"You saw me back in middle school. I was practically a mess." Maya looks up from her laptop.
"Here." He takes the laptop from her, looking at the colleges in front of his eyes. "You want to go to Juilliard?" He says in amazement, seeing that it's her first choice on the screen. Maya blushes and shrugs.
"I would if I was smart enough."
"You are! You should apply even if you don't think you're right for it. Won't kill to try." Lucas hands her laptop back and her eyes linger on his, a small smile tugging at her lips.
"What college are you going to, Huckleberry?" She asks, putting her laptop to the side. Lucas shrugs.
"Well, I don't know. But I still kinda want to be a Veterinarian.." Lucas waits for her insults, but nothing comes. "No comment?"
"I mean, it's something that you wanna be. You're entitled." Maya clasps her hands in his own. "I bet you'd be a great one." Lucas smiles, and leans in, planting a kiss on her lips. When he pulls away, he tastes his lips. "Popcorn?"
"Only the best." She smirks.
---
It's spring and Maya is incredibly and tremendously anxious. She paces her kitchen, waiting for Lucas, Farkle and Riley to come over. It's an early Monday morning, and Maya of course is awake because she's been waiting for weeks for these letters to arrive.
"Maya, sweetie?" Katie calls hesitantly. "If you pace any longer, you're gonna make me crazy."
Maya bites her lip and looks at three envelopes from the three colleges she applied to. What if she didn't get in to any of them? A million what ifs ran through her mind. Suddenly, the doorbell rings several times and the girl runs the hell over to answer it.
"COME IN." Maya yells, pulling Lucas, Riley, and Farkle into the living room along with the envelopes. They sit down as Katie walks into the living room, biting her lip. "Okay. Here we go."
"You got this peaches." Riley cheers her as she opens the first envelope. "Okay, so this is to Purchase. My least favorite college, but my safe." She reads the letter and her anxious expression drops a bit. "Didn't like Suny anyway." She mutters, passing it onto the floor. "Okay, next. Fordham. I think that's in the Bronx, right?"
"How long have you lived in New York?" Riley chuckles as she opens it. Her facial expression falls again and Maya feels her heart beating with anger.
"I knew I wasn't smart for this college. For any of these colleges!" She puts her hands over her eyes. As Maya tries snatching the last envelope, Riley grabs it. Maya confusingly glances back at her.
"Let me read this one. It's from Juilliard." Riley reads, neatly opening up the envelope. Everyone's heart beats faster as Riley takes out the letter. Maya swears she's gonna pass out any second now. "Okay. Dear Ms. Hart. On behalf of Juilliard University, I am... pleased to congratulate you on your acceptance into our program for the fall 2019 semester." Before Maya hears her say that, her eyes are filling with tears. But suddenly, Riley's voice is music to her ears. Lucas's mouth becomes agape and Katie covers her mouth. Maya stands up and begins to cry.
"Oh my god." Riley exclaims, standing up and running over to her friend as does Farkle and Lucas. They give her a group hug, screaming and cheering for her. Maya wipes her tear stained cheeks and smiles from ear to ear. Katie hugs her tight and kisses the top of her head.
"This is AMAZING." She screams, hugging the acceptance letter to her chest. Lucas caresses her hair as he kisses her, whispering congratulations.
-----
Senior year and Senioritis. It's a Tuesday afternoon and everyone was bouncing off the walls, literally. Zay is currently in Texas fever mode; running around the halls, circling his rope every five steps. Farkle, Maya and Riley are walking around the school, ditching basically every class. It was an amazing day for everyone. The school speakers are playing soft fun music, but not so loud to disturb classes.
"I love this school." Riley cries, cueing her emotional facial expression. "We're never gonna be here again. I'll never see my history teacher again!"
Lucas gave her a look. "He's your father."
Riley's mouth forms a pout. "Oh yeah." Maya chuckles as her arm is currently linked with hers.
"Have we really ever seen every inch of this school?" Maya wonders as they walk down the hallway. Farkle shook his head.
"Definitely not. You know how limited our school can be about trespassing." He informed his friends as they made a turn, going down the stairs.
"Farkle's right. I mean, this school has four floors."
"We've been on, like, two." Lucas shrugs, looking at the sign that read, "SECOND FLOOR".
"Thanks for obvious, Huckleberry."
"You know you love me."
They all walk together past the second floor and begin walking down the third stair. There wasn't much, but some old janitor's closets and old empty classrooms. Riley wonders why they were not put to use.
"Well, if this part wasn't interesting, the fourth is probably going to be nothing."
"I wouldn't say that." Maya sniffs the air. "It smells like... Chlorine." She crinkles her nose up.
Once they walk down the flight of stairs, they reach a door. Lucas raises his brows. "Well, here goes nothing." He opens it, and everyone's mouth goes agape. "Holy.. Crap."

Stopping here because I reached basically 4000 words. Hahahaha I have psychological writing problems. I haven't been updating because I've been writing this for a month almost. Until next time... It shall be continued.
