Brooke had received an email from her school the following morning, demanding a mandatory assembly to come together in the memory of Carol Lockwood and "unite during these dark times".

She hadn't wanted to go, in fact it was completely inappropriate of her to go when she had spent all of yesterday being held hostage by Tyler, and then the night in bed with the man who had killed Carol.

But Brooke couldn't stop the guilt that gnawed at her stomach, knowing she had forgiven Klaus for what he did, and that Tyler had lost his last family member because of her. She remembered when she was young and her father had left town and Tyler had been there for her and Caroline, lending them colouring pencils and extra snacks to try and cheer them up.

Yet, Brooke had betrayed him and cost him the last family he had, and she could not turn on him now, when he was suffering the most.

So she had climbed out of bed and dressed herself, and slipped out of the Mikaelson home.

Klaus had watched her go, and he had wanted to stop her and tell her that facing the consequences of his actions would only hurt her. But Klaus knew that deep down he had also hurt Brooke, and no matter how much she loved him, she needed time as well, so he let her have it.

Brooke arrived at her school only 15 minutes later, and she climbed out of her car, prepared to face the anguish that awaited her inside, but then she stopped because Tyler was marching out of the school.

Suddenly, Brooke couldn't move. The innocent old human part of her wanted to run over and hug her friend, and console him on the loss of his mother. But she couldn't do that anymore, as the woman in love with the man who killed her.

Tyler saw her too, and he stopped walking as well. His hands balled into fists at his side, and Brooke believed he may rush over and hurt her for what Klaus did, and she probably deserved it. But he never did. He didn't have to hurt her with his fists, because the look in his eyes did that enough.

Brooke and Tyler had grown up together here, playing on this very school lawn. For a while as teenagers their friendship had even bloomed into something romantic. Then, once that had faded, they remained close friends, even amidst the supernatural drama which had threatened to tear them apart and risked their lives.

Yet now, Tyler's eyes were staring at her, so full of hatred, disgust, anger, and sadness, and just from that, Brooke felt like her heart was being ripped out of her chest. She had betrayed him, someone who had trusted her, someone she had loved, someone her sister loved.

Brooke wanted to say something.

She wanted to scream, or cry, or beg him for forgiveness, but no words would come out, because what could she say? There was nothing she could say to fix this. Carol was gone because of Nik, and Tyler would never forgive Brooke for it, and she couldn't blame him. But that couldn't change how much it hurt.
