The sun peeked out from behind the clouds skittishly, occasionally warming your face with its rays. It felt nice, feeling the sun's warmth in this freezing winter temperature. And what also felt nice was C/n's hand tightly wrapped around yours.
Although, C/n sure did not seem that happy to need to hold on to you. Today was his second attempt at ice skating and while his legs seemed to be shaking less, he still didn't quite find his footing if you weren't there to anchor him.
He can manage one slide of a skate forward without holding on, but that's it. You had been skating hand in hand pretty much for the whole hour you had been there, surely looking like the couple you wish you were. But perhaps you will be. C/n considered this a date, after all.
In your deep thoughts, you didn't quite catch the movement, or his hand slipping from yours. Only when he yelled your name a few steps ahead did your head whip in his direction, seeing him slide forward on his own, hands awkwardly stretched out on either side of him as a means to quickly stifle a hard fall, if there should be one.
"That's great-" you began to call out to him with a wide grin on your face, watching him skate...
Until he was splattered across the ice, with a small kid lying on top of him as if he was a cushion.
"(Kid's name), be careful!" who appeared to be the kid's mom rushed to C/n and pried her child off of him, helping him stand up while apologizing profusely.
He waved her off politely, "don't worry about it," just as you arrived at his side and asked, "are you hurt?"
The mom apologized once more, pulling the kid away with her, and you looked C/n over. He had some ice dust coating his side, so you reached up with your hand and dusted him off.
"I'm all good to go again," he grinned at you. "Did you see it? I would've made the whole round around the rink if not for that kid..." he mumbled the last part, still loudly enough for you to catch, and you couldn't help but laugh at him.
"Yeah, I'm very proud of you," you said in between your laughter. "I guess that means you no longer need to hold on to me, so I can skate however I want." You skated backwards while looking at him as he stood on the ice, unmoving.
"Wait, don't go so far! I still need your hand!" He pushed forward on the skates toward you and winced suddenly. You were by his side in a second.
"What's wrong?" Concern flooded your face in the form of crinkled brows. Scrutinizing him closely, you didn't hesitate to wrap your arm around his wide frame to support him. "Did you get hurt when you fell down? Where does it hurt?"
"I'm fine, I'm fine," he kept reassuring you as the two of you slowly skated towards the rink's exit and you forced him to plop on the nearest bench available.
"Well you're clearly not if you're wincing from pain," you muttered as he, once again, winced while sitting down. Kneeling before him, you put your hand gently atop his leg. "Where does it hurt?" you repeated your question.
He huffed. "My knee," he gave in, "when I put pressure on it."
"We should go home and put some ice on it." Still frowning, you began to untie the skates you borrowed from your brother and which C/n was currently wearing.
The boy in front of you laughed. "I could put some ice on it if you'd let me take a few steps."
You couldn't help but smile yourself. After all, the rink - the ice - was the reason he got hurt. And ice was also the remedy you offered. "We should go to your house. It's a lot closer than mine." Your hands fumbled with your own laces, frozen fingers having trouble with untangling the knots.
"Sly, Y/n. What a way to invite yourself to my place," he quirked his eyebrows at you like a freak. "But you should know," he leaned closer to you until you felt his hot breath on your cheek and whispered into your ear, "I'm not the type to sleep with someone on the second date. So your attempt is futile. You can come over, but no getting nasty in my bed." He was still wiggling his eyebrows freakishly when you glanced at him, cheeks now red not because of the cold but the blood rushing to them, flustered and embarrassed.
"What the hell, C/n, " you whisper-yelled, giving him a nugde to the arm with all the strength you could muster in this cold weather. "Who said I even want to sleep with you?"
"People who date usually do."
"We- we date?" You were caught completely off guard, not by his innuendo but rather by the fact he considered you two together already.
"Don't we?" It was his turn to frown at you. "I mean, this is our second date. I thought- But if you don't want to-" He suddenly grew quite shy and nervous.
"I want to," you cut in quickly. "I just didn't expect-" searching for the right words, you allowed yourself a moment of deep breath before continuing again, "we're dating." It was just a plain statement, more so for yourself rather than him. You couldn't believe it.
"We're dating," he repeated.
Snapping out of it, your feet now in warm shoes, you stood up while saying, "we should go. Your knee demands attention."
It was as if neither one of you suddenly knew how to act now that the truth had been spoken to the open air. Dating. How strange it felt on your tongue. How sweet and rich. You turned to him slowly, waiting for him to awkwardly stand up and follow, but not before you once again wrapped your arm around him to lessen the pressure he's otherwise need to put on his painful knee.
One short limp to the bus stop and even shorter bus ride and you were at his place, rummaging through his freezer for a suitable bag of frozen stuff he could put on his knee. When you finally found some frozen vegetable pack, you wrapped it in a towel and handed it to him, who was sitting behind the kitchen table, watching you closely.
He sucked in a sharp breath when placing it atop his knee.
"Did it get worse?" you asked with worry, seeing the way he tightened his jaw to not let out any sound.
"It'll get better once I rest for a bit."
"You sure? Maybe we should go to the doctor or-"
"No, I just need to rest for the rest of today," he cut you off. Then looked at you as you were leaning against the kitchen counter, unsure of what to do now. "Come distract me from the pain." His outstretched hand hung in the air between you two, motioning you closer to him.
Timidly, you took it. You wanted to date C/n for so long and still, the whole concept turning into reality was such a new thing for you that you had no idea what to do near him anymore. What was appropriate? What was he comfortable with? And what did he expect of you? You dreamt if this moment and yet, now that you had it, were unsure of yourself despite the fact that this scenario had been playing in your head on repeat.
"How?"
"You could start by letting me look into your eyes like this," he said while staring into your e/c eyes, drinking them in, drowning in them. He wasn't that much shorter than you even though he was sitting down, so you almost didn't need to bend your neck lower at all to stare back.
"Y/n?" His hand slipped from the frozen veggie pack to pull you closer. Both his calling of your name and touch hurled you back within reality from the swirling orbs that were his eyes.
"Yeah?" You didn't dare speak louder than a whisper in this moment.
"While I may not be the type to sleep with people on the second date," a pause, "I certainly am the type to want to kiss people on the second date." His head was inching closer to yours and you didn't even realize you were doing the same. "Hell, I wanted to kiss you for forever." The ice pack hit your tigh as you shuffled even closer. "Can I?"
You answered with no words, rather with a brush of your lips to which he responded eagerly.
