21st Precinct
As arranged Kelly met Jay in the foyer of the precinct. The pairs' arrival upstairs drew curious looks which intensified when they walked into the Sergeants' office and closed the door.
"What the hell is that about?" Adam demanded.
"No doubt we'll find out," Al placated patiently, his own curiosity was peaked as the green eyed man had looked decidedly unhappy.
"Maybe something came up in the Porter case," Antonio mused.
"Considering Severide is here it has to be related to Porter," Kevin concurred.
"Voight doesn't look pleased," Adam observed.
"If he catches you he won't be happy! Let's get back to the paperwork before we head out," Al suggested mildly, they would be spending the remainder of the day searching their allocated areas.
Inside the Sergeants' office once Jay had imparted the most pertinent piece of information silence reigned as the vein on the formidable mans' forehead quite visibly throbbed. The Firefighter shifted uncomfortably on his feet. Hell it was like being back in the Principals' office! Casting a look towards the Detective beside him he took solace in the fact he did not seem ruffled. Then again the man wasn't prone to displaying his emotions in normal times so his relief was somewhat tempered. For his part the green eyed man knew he had to let his Superior digest the unexpected news at his own pace. Bombarding him with possible scenarios was not the way to go. Once again his patience stood him well. He randomly considered how Adam would handle the situation with the Sergeant and had to suppress a grin. By now he would have engendered an explosion from the gruff man!
"So Gambini is linked to the gym?" Voight finally broke the silence.
"Can't say anything definite this early," the Detective informed evenly before venturing into more turbulent waters, "Arnott was unaware of any connection."
"You spoke to him first?"
"It's his case."
"Gambini is a big fish and I'm going to land him," the Sergeant declared sternly, his tone alone implied no one else would do so.
"Sarge the Porter case has turned out to be way more complicated than we expected .....,"
"That's true," the older man focused on the silent Firefighter before confessing frankly, "which is the only reason I'm not hauling Severide here over the coals."
"I would never have agreed to Jay helping me if I had known it was going to turn into something serious."
"You shouldn't be dabbling in things anyway and ....,"
"You don't get to dictate to me," Kelly countered sternly, he was not going to be brow beaten by the older man, he was here to support his friend so he wouldn't encounter flak alone but was not going to be treated like a recalitrant child.
"What's Arnotts' take on Gambini?" Voight finally tore his gaze away from Kelly.
"He's eager to find out his involvement in Willians' death, if there is one."
"Has Mouse done a deep dive into the gym finances?"
"I'm going to ask him to do one now," Jay stated, purposefully not looking at the Firefighter but sensing he wouldn't divulge the IT Specialists' prior involvement.
"Good. Get him on it straight away we ...,"
"Sarge this is Arnotts' case. He's a good Detective .....,"
"Never said he wasn't."
"There's no guarantee this Gambini guy is even implicated in the murder," Kelly offered reasonably, it might just be a coincidence that he was linked to the gym.
"That's highly unlikely," Voight sighed heavily then added grimly, "the manner in which Williams was murdered is exactly Gambinis' MO."
"Would the head of a mafia family get his hands dirty?" Kelly frowned, his knowledge of the Mafia was based on films so not exactly reliable.
"If he wanted to send a specific message ... yes," Voight explained, "leave it with me. I'm going to talk to Crowley."
Jay decided he needed more information on the Sergeants' determination to personally bring Gambini down but asking the man would not yield anything so he decided he'd have to approach Al. The moustached man was bound to know the full background. Although he was usually mindful of respecting peoples' privacy on this occasion Jay felt an exception was warranted. Pretty soon he was going to be caught between a rock and a hard place as the two precincts fought over jurisdiction and he needed to be aware of all the facts. Motioning to Kelly he saluted the Sergeant and led the way out of the office ignoring the questioning looks they garnered as they headed for the stairs.
