Chapter 31: The Death to Lose Them All

Flora's POV

I quickly wrapped the book back up in its red linen. I faced the door as she left, wanting to explain everything. I wanted to explain why I left. Why I stayed with Michael. That he's the love of my life. That even he isn't safe. No ones safe.
I wonder who she came with?

"Darling, it was Rishardo," said my mothers voice in mind. Thanks mum. She can always get insight on the things I can't find out. It's helpful, she really isn't bad. As I pulled a string from my pocket and tied it around the book like a present, large, strong arms hugged me around the waist.

"Im sorry I pushed her Flora. You know how I've been since your last attack."

"I know. You just want to protect me."

"If only you knew babe. If only you knew." He said this as he lightly kissed under my ear, sending shivers down my spine. I snuggled into him, pressing against him. I felt safe with him. Safer than I did with anyone else.

And then I heard the screams.

Michael's POV

Tires screeched.

And I could hear screams.

Sapphire and Rishardo's screams. High pitched and ailing. I held Flora close. I could hear her breath catch.

I had to keep up the good boyfriend role.

"You wanna... Go out there...?" I asked, hiding the smile on my face very well. She just shook her head

"no."

So we didn't. She went into the makeshift living room and sat on the couch. I knew Saraphine must be telling her what happened outside. Every detail, like a read-a-loud horror story. With your best friend in it, as well as the boy you had a crush on before you met a spell. I stood in the hallway and looked out the crack in the heavy metal door. My eyes flashed their own dark shade of gold, darker than Amber. They were almost red, one would say.

Red and pure evil.

A bright light shined from behind me. I turned, and everything was in slow motion. Flora floated into the air, her wings limp and lifeless below her. It encased her in a sort of bubble. It glowed pink, then red. I was thinking that Flora could be sucked into this void of darkness where her ancestors went because they are too dark for the world. But eventually Flora is able to come back, and it had been like two months. But she is totally different. She would be more powerful than anyone, but she doesn't know it for she doesn't remember the experience. She can't control it. At times it would come out of hand, people would get hurt. So she would run away to a dark chamber and torture herself until she felt "clean." But one day she went too far, and loses all memory. Permanently. This works according to the journal.

-Rishardo's POV-

All I could hear was the sirens blaring in my ears before I blacked out completely.

I woke up again in the hospital, in a lone room with iv's and everything attached to my arms and just about every other part of my body. I looked down to see that my whole right leg was missing from my body and I had to stop myself from screaming. As far as I could remember, Sapphire's side of the car got the most of the impact so... where was she.

"So, you finally woke up," a nurse said, walking through the dark wood door. I looked at her, and she smiled a smile I knew all too well.

"What happened?" I asked, really just wanting to know about Sapphire. She gave me a grieved look and sat down in the chair next to my bed.

"the car that hit you was going really fast, so the impact was quite a punch... you've been out for weeks," she explained, trying to grab my hand. I pulled it away and looked straight into her eyes, making sure she wouldn't lie.

"What happened to Sapphire?" I asked, and her face fell.

"The passenger, Sapphire... didn't survive," she said, and pulled something out of her pocket. It was the magic necklace that had been placed around both of our necks when I had saved her. I choked on my tears and started to scream and cry.

"You weren't supposed to take it off of her! I could've saved her! God no, please! Take me! Leave her alone! Please... NO! Take me, save her! Save her! Please! God, no! Take me, I deserve to die! I was supposed to protect her, but I killed her... I deserve to die! Take me, please! She can't die! No, please! I love her, she can't die! I should've paid more attention, she shouldn't have died! God, please!" I screamed as loud as I could, my voice ringing through the whole hospital. The nurse leaned over, and cradled me in her arms. There was no longer anything left in my life. Ever since I had met Sapphire, I became her, looking and loving from afar, and that's all I knew how to do and now... she was gone. My tears drained out, and when they stopped, the nurse left. She was the one love in my life, and I never got to tell her that, Joseph stole her away from me and the one shot I would've gotten to tell her was now left in the locket I held that should've saved her... but they took it off of her.

How could they be so stupid! I mean, someone gets into a car accident, you don't randomly take off their... oh, oh no. You don't randomly take off jewelry... so what if it wasn't random? I could be in a trap, and the car hitting us might not have been an accident...

"Ahhh!" I screamed, low enough so no one could hear it. My heart started beating faster and my head throbbed in pain.

"Don't listen to anything they say. This is supposed to happen," Sapphire's voice filled my mind, and I was pulled into a memory.

"When we get to that intersection, a car is gonna come around and hit us. Don't worry, this is supposed to happen. When it hits us, I'm gonna... never mind. I just won't be there to help you, so take this," Sapphire handed me a piece of paper and I put it in my pocket. "Don't listen to anything they say. This is supposed to happen."

I nodded and went around the bend. Just as the car went to hit us, I noticed that Sapphire's necklace lay in her lap, not around her neck.

"Sapphire! Your neckla..." My voice faded to nothing as the car slammed into us and the memory had been taken.

"It's a trap," I breathed quietly. Then, I carefully placed my hand into the pocket of my jeans and pulled out the piece of paper. Rolled up inside the paper... was Sapphire's necklace.
