It was still 3 in the morning and the parking area of the foundation was very much alive. People might still be sleeping or getting ready for the day, but it was a completely different story for the volunteers.
Vans and hauling trucks lined up with the foundation logo on them. Volunteers carried boxes from the storage room. Nurses checked inventories. Folding tables leaned against each other. Oxygen tanks stood neatly beside the portable medical machines. Coolers filled with temperature-sensitive medication, all waited to be loaded.
The black RAM 1500 rolled to a stop beside the lined vehicles.
"Sigurado ka ba?", George asked, his hands still resting on the steering wheel.
Leni just nodded while unbuckling her seatbelt, "Yes, two-thirty call time eh"
He just stared at her for a momen before sighing in defeat. If he's stubborn, Leonor is on another level.
"Matulog ka sa byahe", he then reached for the backseat and handed her a paper bag. "Coffee and breakfast"
She accepted it, smiled at him before planting a tender kiss on his lip. George rested his forehead against her before speaking.
"Text me kapag dumating kayo"
"I will"
"Eat well"
"I will"
"Sleep"
"Can't guarantee"
He pulled back, "Leonor..."
She just chuckled and held his cheek, "Opo"
Only then, did he seem to be satisfied. the moment she stepped out of the truck Rafael was already jogging his way to her. He seemed to have the energy to power the entire convoy.
"GOOD MORNING !" he greeted, "natulog ka ba?", Rafa asked.
Leni shook her head. "Almost two na akong naka labas nang OR, nagpa hatid kaagad ako kay George rito"
Rafa whistled, "Grabe"
Then as if remembering something, he pointed to George.
"Sabihin mo kay George ha"
"Bakit?" she frowned.
"Yung promise n'ya"
"Anong promise?"
"Mag papadala raw sya nang food packs on the last day, apology kase di sya makapunta"
Leni slowly looked at George, he immediately looked away and suddenly got interested with the car's stereo.
Guilty as charged.
Moments later George finally pulled away from the parking lot after Leni's scrutiny.
"Di yun mapakali no?" Rafa spoke again after being quiet for exactly three minutes.
"Hindi"
"Buti nga umalis"
Leonor smiled. "Baket?"
"Baka maya maya s'ya na nag bunuhat nang generator dun"
Before she could reply, Win emerged from a silver SUV that just pulled. He stepped out bringing his duffle bag, approaching them with such enthusiasm.
"Good morning!"
"Morning Senator Win!" Rafa matched his energy.
The golden retrievers collided. Few volunteers noticed the senator's presence and immediately exchanged glances. Win's eyes scanned everyone before asking.
