The parking lot started to get clear as the convoy left one by one. The hauling trucks led the way, each with foundation logo printed on them. They were followed by ambulances, then the foundation vans that carried the rest og the volunteers.
Win and Leni were on the same vehicle. The senator occupied the passenger seat while the surgeon was behind him, laptop opened checking the patient lists.
Rafa and Ferdinand were on the extra utility pickup they borrowed. Riza was with her team discussing plans.
"So...", Win spoke first as the slow hum of the engine filled their silence. "Pano to nag simula?"
Leonor looked up from her screen, "The medical missions?"
Win just nodded through the rear view mirror.
She smiled as she recalled.
"Maliit lang. One van. Two doctors"
"You and Riza?"
"Oo, and two of our friends" she replied, "Then George came, so naging five man job"
"Who's George?" Win's eyes were still fixed on the rear view mirror to see her.
"May ari ng pick up na yan", she pointed on the white chevy silverado ahead of them.
"And Rafa?"
"He had the money" Leni chuckled.
"Doc. Ferdinand also?", Win queued again.
"It's his first time joining us", Leni chuckled after remembering how they got him aboard. "He just signed the volunteer papers bago ka dumating sa canteen"
Win nodded, "Oh so he's not one of the five" then asked.
"Was it hard?"
"On what part?", a question countered Win's
"When you started"
Leni just sighed and placed her palms on her knees, looking out the window watching the dark highway disappear after the light.
"It was. Not because of the finances, but dahil wala kaming idea sa ginagawa namin. Basta't maka tulong, yun lang ang goal."
Win just listened intently.
"We had our first out reach with just thirty patients"
Her eyes drifted to her laptop screen which had the name of over Six Hundred patients.
"Kami pa nag so-source nang supplies. Nag-aaya nang volunteers. Nag bubuhat nang lahat. Pero ngayon..." she looked at the convoy, "Donations can't stop flowing, puno agad yung google forms for volunteers. Mas nakaka abot na kung saang sulok"
The senator became silent for a moment looking out the window. He was reflecting on how these people had absolutely no responsibility to such things. Yet, they did and sought ways to help without huge machineries. An opposite to those people who have the duties and resources to uplift communities using the power that the people gave them.
"You've all been doing this for years..." Win started again.
"Twelve"
"That long?", He turned back.
Leni nodded, "Every few months, no press, no sponsors following us. We just go"
"You know", Win rested his elbow on the window, "I've attended a lot of outreach programs", he looked at the convoy. "But this one feels different"
