Chapter 20:

Nate’s POV

Gah. I feel horrible. I have the basketball game in 30 minutes and I haven’t even left my house yet. As of right now I am laying on my couch with my jersey on and I feel like I’m going to barf everywhere. But, I have to go. If I don’t, coach will kill me and make me run, and I am NOT running more than I have to at the game. I looked down at my phone and checked the time. I have 20 minutes. I guess I have to go. I groaned as I got up from the couch and grabbed my keys to my car.

I’m not going to take my bike because it will probably make me sick. I walked out the door and slowly got into my car. I slammed the door shut and started to make my way towards the school. Thank god it’s a home game.

I should have never drank. Especially that much. At parties that I go to, I usually just drink water or apple juice to act like I’m drinking. It never fails, no one expects it not to be alcohol. I feel my phone buzz on my leg and look down. It’s a text from Carrie. I opened it; it read.

From: Carrie
To: Me

At the school! I’m with Ally in the bleachers! See you when you play! Good luck!(:

I didn’t answer her back right away because I was pulling into my parking spot at the school. So I turned off my car and texted her back.

From: Me
To: Carrie

Just got here! I will see you in there. Thanks, Sweetheart.(;

I slowly jogged up to the school and saw that I had 10 minutes to get into the gym from looking at my phone. As I pulled open the door to the school, the smell of hotdogs, nachos, and many other foods hit my nose. I covered my nose and sped up my walking. It reeks in here. Any other day I would have enjoyed the smell of those foods, but not right now. I made my way down the boys locker room and walked in.

First person I saw was Coach, and oh he did he look relieved that I came.

“Thank the lord you are here! I was about to panic, but I knew you would come.” Coach set slapping me on the back.

“Yeah, wouldn’t miss it.” I groaned out.

He didn’t slap my on the back too hard, but it made me feel even more sick.

“You don’t look so good kid.” He said with a confused face.

“I’m fine Coach, just a little sick that’s all.” I said trying to muster up all the strength I could to stand up straight and to smirk.

“Fine. Fine. Whatever you say!” He practically yelled, and then walked away.

I slumped down as soon as he was out of sight.

“Hey man! Glad you came! I was starting to think that you weren’t coming!” I heard my best friend Jake yell from behind me.

“Mhm. Wouldn’t miss the game.” I said turning around.

I guess I looked really bad because his eyes widened.

“Woah, you don’t look too good. What happened?” Jake said quietly.

“I drank last night.” I said trying to avoid his eyes.

“YOU WHAT?!” Jake screamed.

“Shut up. Yes! I drank! It’s not a big fucking deal!” I said getting angry.

“Yes it is!” He said getting angry too.

The reason why he’s getting so angry too, is because he knows about my dad, and why I quit drinking.

“Not really! I’m not going to drink anymore! It was just a one time thing.” I said shrugging.

“Okay, fine. Whatever.” He said huffing.

“Guess who’s here.” I said, trying to change the subject.

“Who?” Jake asked confused.

“Ally.” I said casually.

“Are you shitting me?!” He said with a look of panic in his eyes.

“Nope” I said popping the ‘p’.

“But, what do I say to her?! What if I try to and she ignores me!? Or-Or-” He rambles on, getting this crazy, panic look in his eyes.

“Just stay calm. Caroline brought her. I didn’t invite her. She probably doesn’t even realize you are going to be out there.” I said trying to get him to calm down before he causes a scene.

“Okay. You’re right. But man, what if she doesn’t like me anymore?! OR WORSE!? WHAT IF SHE DOESN’T LOVE ME!?” He said still rambling.

“You are Jake Web. All the girls love you. She will too.” I said.

“You’re right. She has to still love me.” He said smirking.

“I’m Jake Web. I’m amazing, awesome, and hot.” He continued.

I shook my head and chuckled. This guy is so full of himself. I was about to say something when Coach said it was time to go out and play. I felt my stomach  drop at the thought of having to run. I looked at Jake and nodded my head.

“Ready to kick some ass?” I asked smirking.

“Yes. We’re going to kick major ass. LET’S GO!” He screamed.

Unfortunately, the made everyone else scream. MIGRAINE! I cleared all my thoughts about what is going on and smiled as we made our way out to the gym. I scanned the bleachers and spotted Carrie. I smiled as I saw her laughing with Ally. She is really beautiful. I think she felt that I was looking at her and smiled back at me.

I walked over to where everyone was huddling together. Coach was setting up the plan. I didn’t listen because I already knew the plan, it’s basically the same one every game. The buzzer when off letting us know that the game has started. I went up to the spot and let the adrenaline take me over.

Carrie’s POV

WOOO!” I screamed with the crowd as our team made another basket.

I couldn’t help but notice that Nate wasn’t looking too good. His face was really white and looked like he was about to pass out. I wasn’t sitting far away from where he was playing so I could see the dark circles under his eyes, the ones where when you don’t get enough sleep. But, he said that he slept in, so I don’t think that’s why. I shook my head to get those thoughts out of my head. I put a smile on my face and kept cheering.

I looked at the scoreboard and saw that we had 48-12. Then I looked at the time, we had 2 minutes and 10 seconds left. I looked around the bleachers and saw that the ‘guest’ side were all sitting down and had this bored expression on there face. You could tell that they just gave up a long time ago.

I looked over at Ally and saw that she was staring at someone intensely. I followed her eyes to Jake. Awhh. So cute. I need to speak to Nate about the operation to get them back together. I was broke out of my thoughts as the buzzer rang. I looked up too see that Nate made a 3 pointer swish as soon as it went off.

Everyone ran from the bleachers and then ran to the team and cheered around them. I ran down to congratulate Nate but he ran off to the boys locker room. I pulled my eyebrows together in confusion. I followed him and stopped right at the locker room. I debated on rather or not to go in there. Ehh. No one is in there so why not?

I walked in and heard someone throwing up. I sped up my walking and got closer and closer to the noise.

“Nate?” I called out, unsure.

He didn’t answer so I sped up even faster. I got to the end of the locker room and seen him leaning into the toilet barfing. I gasped and walked closer to him. I lent next next to him and started to rub his back; trying to comfort him.

“Go Carrie.” He said groaning.

“No, I’m not leaving you here.” I said being stubborn.

“I don’t want you to see me like this.” Nate said groaning again.

I shook my head and sat right behind him. I wrapped my arms around his stomach and slowly massaged it. When I was a kid my mom always rubbed my stomach when I didn’t feel good, so I thought it might help him. At first he tensed up but then I kept on rubbing it so he finally relaxed. I kept rubbing his stomach and put my chin on his shoulder.

We sat there for another couple minutes and he finally leaned back a little.

“Are you okay?’ I asked softly.

“No.” He said leaning into me fully.

I kissed his cheek and kept rubbing his stomach. I have never seen him this vulnerable, as long as I’ve known him. I was about to say something but then I heard the boys cheering as they walked in the locker room. I quickly got up and locked the single bathroom door. I walked back down to Nate and looked at him.

He had huge black circles under his eyes, he was also burning up, and not from the game, also his face was really white. I got up and walked over to where the extra towels were and grabbed one. Then, I walked to the sink and got it wet. After that, I walked back and sat next to him. Then I lowered him down to where his face was in my lap and put the cloth over his forehead.

I heard him let out a big sigh as the coolness hit his skin. I ran my fingers through is dark brown hair. He sighed again.

“Are you okay?” I asked softly.

“No. I drank last night.” He said groaning.

“What? Why?” I asked trying not to let my shock go through my voice.

“My dad. I drank because of him. But, I didn’t mean to. I wasn’t supposed to.” He mumbled.

“What do you mean by you weren’t supposed to?” I said running my hands through his hair still.

“I don’t want to end up like my dad.” He murmured.

“What is your dad like?” I asked softly.

“One time he got so drunk he slapped my mom. And then I got so drunk one day a year ago and got into a big fight with Jake.” Nate said groaning.

I gasped and looked down at him.

“Please don’t be afraid of me.” He said looking up at me for the first time.

I didn’t say anything as I looked into his blue eyes, and saw nothing but sincerity in them.

“I will never be afraid.” I said truthfully.

“Are you sure?” He said softly.

“I’m completely sure. I will never be afraid of you Babe.” I said looking into his eyes.

“I lo-” He starts to say before he passes out.

I started to panic! I got up as fast as I could and then ran to the sink and got more cold water. I drenched the towel in it and put it on his head.

“NATE! WAKE UP!” I said shaking him.

He woke up a little and so I pulled up him with him leaning up against me and started to walk towards the door. I slowly unlocked it and then peeked my head outside. I didn’t see anyone in the locker room so I slowly walked to the gym and saw that the janitors were cleaning up in the bleachers. I tried to be as quiet as I could and walked through the gymnasium doors and out into the commens.

I heard him groan softly as we walked into the cold night air. I walked up to my car and guided him into the passenger seat. I shut the door and ran to my side grabbing my keys out of my pocket and put them into the ignition. I  looked into the review mirror and backed out as fast as I could and sped home.

We got to my house under 15 minutes. I was driving about 60 mph on the service road. I chuckled  to myself. I would have never done this last week. I pulled up to my house stopping sharply and hopped out of the car. Then, I ran to the other side and got Nate out. He was still a little groggy so I had to help him out of the car. We walked slowly up the pathway of my house and then I grabbed my keys out of my pocket and unlocked the door.

I was about to say something when Nate all of a sudden ran up to my room and I heard the door slam. I ran up as fast as I could and heard him throwing up again and I walked into my bathroom. I sat down behind him and put my legs next to his and then started rubbing his stomach again. I heard him sigh softly and it made my heart swell.

“This is the opposite of what should be happening.” He mumbled.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I should be the one rubbing your stomach to make you feel better.” He said leaning into my like he did back at the school.

“Don’t worry about it.” I said kissing his shoulder lightly.

He sighed and from what I could see, his eyes closed and he layed on my shoulder. I sighed too and layed my head on his head. I could faintly hear his breathing. I felt oddly comfortable on the ground so I layed next to him and put my head on his chest and went to sleep.

Within seconds the darkness consumed me.
