Chapter Thirteen
Was I bummed? Heck yea! To find out you’re adopted when you’re almost 15 years old is pretty hard to deal with. But I guess I should’ve noticed. I mean I look nothing like my parents. My mom has blond hair and my dad has black hair. I have red. That was a pretty good indicator right there.
But I really wanted to figure out where I got my powers from. And I was hoping that I could get John to go with me and see if we could find my birth parents.
I told John about what happened the next day at school. He seemed very surprised by it but he agreed to help me.
So he picked me up after school in his truck and we started driving.
“One question,” John said.
“What?” I said.
“Where are we going?” he said.
“You don’t know where we’re going?” I said.
“No. I don’t know where to go to find someone’s real parents. Do they have like a Parent Finder Agency or something?” he said.
“Not that I know of. But they do have something called the LIBRARY,” I said.
“Yea and how is that supposed to help us?” he said.
“A library has a computer,” I said.
He looked at me.
“With internet,” I said.
And he still looked dumbfounded.
“So we can use the internet to search for my real parents,” I said.
“Oh! I get it now!” he said.
Boys. They’re so dumb sometimes.
We got to the library and got out of the truck. I went up to the front desk.
“Hi,” the lady said. She looked to be about in her mid-fifties or early sixties.
“Hi,” I said back.
“May I help you?” she said.
“Um, yes. We need to borrow a computer,” I said.
“We?” the lady said.
I gestured to John.
“Yes. We,” I said.
“Is this a project you’re working on?” she said.
“Yes. It is,” I said.
“Well, I’m sorry but we seem to be out of computers at the moment,” she said.
I turned around. They have about 10 computers in the library because we have a very small town. And they were all taken.
“Um, ok. I guess we’ll come back later,” I said.
I turned to leave and John followed me.
“Hey,” he whispered to me. “Why don’t you do your fast forward time thingee?”
“Way ahead of you,” I said.
I grabbed John’s hand and concentrated really hard.
It was sorta funny watching everybody in fast motion. Some people were running really fast. I don’t know. It was fun to watch.
The next thing I knew, a computer was open.
“What do you know? A computer is available,” I said.
