Chapter Twenty-Two

John’s P.O.V.

The truth was I really did love Tiffany. More than I’ve ever loved anybody or anything. And it hurt to think that I might not get to hold her hand or touch her ever again. But it was for her own good.

“John? Did you hear me?” Tiffany said, pulling me out of my thoughts.

“Huh? Oh. Yes, I heard you,” I said.

“Really? Then what did I just say?” she said.

“Something about Kira and how she’s obsessed with cows?” I guessed. That probably wasn’t what she was talking about but I’ve always wondered why Kira likes cows so much. It would make more sense if she loved dogs or cats but cows? Come on.

“No. It had nothing to do with that,” she said.

“Oh. Well, why does she like them anyway?” I said.

“I don’t know. If you think about it, they’re kinda cute in a way,” she said. I looked at her weird. “Oh, stop trying to change the subject, John!”

“Well, what did you say anyway?” I asked her.

“You passed my house,” she said.

“Oh. Sorry,” I said. Whoops.

Tiffany’s P.O.V

We were driving in silence for a while. I was staring out the window looking at the different houses we were driving by. I spotted my house and I was waiting for John to slow down but he never did.

“John, you just passed my house,” I said. And no reaction. I guess he didn’t hear me. Is he deaf or something? He just had this sad look on his face. I wondered what he was thinking about.

“John? Did you hear me?” I said.

“Huh. Oh. Yes, I heard you,” he said. He was lying. I could tell.

“Really? Then what did I just say?” I said. THIS should be interesting.

“Something about Kira and how she’s obsessed with cows?” he said. Wow. Was he zoning out THAT much?

“No, it had nothing to do with that,” I said.

“Oh. Well why does she like them anyway?” he said. Well, he’s got a point. Since I’ve known Kira she’s always had a thing for cows. I even got her these pants that you put in water and they grow that had cows on them. And if you don’t believe me, ask around. These pants start out really small, you put them in water and PRESTO, they grow to your size. It’s pretty cool actually. Maybe I should get John a pair of boxers like that for his birthday.

“I don’t know. If you think about it, they’re kinda cute in way,” I said. I don’t know why I just said that. Cows? Cute? Right. Let’s go with that. I looked at John and he was giving me a funny look.

“Oh, stop trying to change the subject, John!” I said. I wondered how far we were from my house now.

“Well, what did you say anyway?” he asked.

“You passed my house,” I said.

“Oh. Sorry,” he said.

“Yea, it’s ok,” I said.

“I’ll just turn the car around,” he said.

“Yea, you do that,” I said. Something was wrong with him but I couldn’t tell what it was. When he finally pulled into my driveway, I heaved a sigh of relief. Finally, I was home. I opened the door, then paused.

“Thanks for driving me everywhere,” I said.

“No problem,” he said with a smile.

I leaned in to kiss him, then thought better of it.

“I probably shouldn’t do that,” I said. He laughed.

“Yea, that’s probably a good idea. And don’t you remember? We’re broken up. We’re not a couple anymore,” he said.

Oh. I had completely forgotten about that.

“Well, we hang out like we’re going out,” I said.

“True, but we’re just really good friends,” he said.

“Right. Friends,” I said. I closed the door and was still staring after his truck when he turned the corner and vanished out of my sight. I sighed. When did my life become so complicated? I walked in the house and stopped. I suddenly knew what I had to do. I whipped out my cell phone and called Brad. After 3 rings he picked up.

“Yellow?” he said. Yes, that’s how he says hello. Kinda cute ain’t it? Wait a minute. What am I thinking? I love John right? Right?

“Hello? Tiffany?” he said. I realized I haven’t said anything yet.

“Oh, hi, Brad. Listen, can you come to my house right now?” I said.

“Why, is something wrong?” he said.

“No, but it’s kind’ve important,” I said.

“Is it that important? I’m spending time with Hayden right now,” he said.

I gasped. “You haven’t touched her or anything have you?” I said.

“No. Of course not. I’m not stupid. She thinks I’m acting weird cause I haven’t touched her, but I just told her that I got into some poison ivy and can’t touch her or she’ll catch it,” he said. It was hard to hear him though cause he was whispering then.

“Really? And what are you going to tell her when your ‘poison ivy’ wears off? Like 2 weeks from now?” I said.

“I don’t know. I’ll think of something. Now what is so important?” he said.

“Just come to my house. Now,” I said.

“Ok, ok. Fine,” he said and hung up. I sat down on my chair and waited. 15 minutes later, the doorbell rang. I got up and opened it and Brad was standing there with his hands in his pockets.

“What can I do for ya?” he said, walking in.

“Ok, I’m not sure how to say this. But I need you to change me. I need you to bite me,” I said.
