Chapter Sixteen

I woke up to a room filled with bright lights and white everywhere. I noticed that I was on a bed and that my mom was sitting beside me.

“Mom?” I said.

“Hi, honey,” she said.

“Where am I?” I asked.

“You’re in the hospital,” she said.

“The hospital?” I asked. “What happened?”

“Well, it seems that you somehow managed to get shocked,” she said.

“Shot?!” I exclaimed.

“No, honey, SHOCKED. Something shocked you,” she said.

“Oh,” I said, relaxing a little bit. “Wait. Where’s John?”

“Right here,” he said, coming into the room. “I thought you might like something to drink so I brought you a Coke,”

“Oh. Thanks,” I said. I reached for it hesitantly because I didn’t want to touch him.

“I’ll just set it down,” he said. He put it on my tray beside the bed.

“Well, I’ll leave you guys to it,” mom said.

After she left, I looked at John.

“What happened earlier?” I asked him.

“You mean you don’t remember?” he said.

“Yea, I remember but it kinda freaks me out a little,” I said.

“Yea, me too,” he said.

“Do you believe my grandma now?” I asked him.

“Maybe. I don’t know. Something’s wrong and we need to talk to your grandmother as soon as possible about this,” he said.

“Yea,” I agreed. Something was bugging me though.

“Hey, John?” I said.

“Mmhmm?” he said.

“Are we still broken up?” I asked him.

“I don’t know. That was your call, not mine,” he said.

I sighed.

“I don’t know either. How about we stay really really close friends until the shock thing wears off?” I suggested.

“Ok. I can live with that,” he said.

“Good,” I said.

At that time the doctor walked in. And surprise, surprise, it was the same doctor that tended to John’s werewolf scratches.

“Hello,” he said.

“Hi,” I said.

“How are we feeling?” he said.

“Better. Just a little tired,” I said.

“That’s perfectly normal,” he said.

“So when can I leave?” I asked him.

“First thing tomorrow morning,” he said.

YESSSSS, I screamed in my head.

“Good,” I said out loud.

“Just be careful around electrical outlets,” he said.

“Um…..ok,” I said.

He then turned to John.

“And how are you?” he said.

“Good,” he said.

“Are the scratches gone?” the doctor asked.

“Yea, it’s like they were never there,” John said.

“Great,” he said.

After the doctor left, I looked at John again.

“What exactly did you tell them happened to me?” I said.

“I told them you plugged your iPod in to charge it and it shocked you,” he said.

“That’s the best you could come up with?” I said.

“Yes. I don’t do well under pressure,” he said.

“Clearly,” I said.

He glared at me.

When I came home the next day, I was doing fairly well for someone who had bolts of electricity go through every inch of their body. The only way you could tell that something had happened was if you looked closely at my hair. The ends of my hair were singed. But I figured it was a small price to pay for getting shocked.

I got to skip school for the rest of the day, which I was happy about. I didn’t want to sit in a chair and learn about the Civil War. I wanted to spend some time with John and go see my grandma.

So a couple of hours after I got home, I grabbed my car keys and my purse and headed out the door.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Mom said.

I stopped in my tracks.

“Out,” I said.

“Out where?” she said.

“I was going to meet John somewhere,” I said.

“Without telling me?” my mom said.

“Umm, noooo……” I said.

“Uh-huh. So when were you going to tell me? When you got back home?” she said.

“No. When I got in my car, I was going to call you,” I said.

Hopefully she bought that.

“Nice try. Get back in the house,” she said.

Nope. She didn’t buy it.

“But mom,” I said.

“No but’s. Sweetie, you JUST got out of the hospital. TODAY. And I don’t think it’s wise for you to go out after what happened,” she said.

“Mom, I’m fine. It was just an accident,” I said.

“Nope. Up to your room,” she said.

“Fine,” I said.

I stomped up the stairs just like I used to do when I was 9.

“STOP THAT!” my mom yelled.

I smiled.

When I got up to my room I texted John and told him I couldn’t meet him today.

He replied: Y not :’(

I replied with: Becuz mom is a meanie and won’t let me leave the house.

He replied: Wat about ur powers?

Oh. Right. Duh. I had completely forgotten about that.

I slowly opened the door and started to inch downstairs. When mom came into view I concentrated……………………….and nothing happened.

I tried it again. And nothing.

Something’s wrong with my powers, I thought to myself.
