Chapter Fourteen

Once we found the house, we just sat in the truck.

“Well, this is it,” John said.

“Yup,” I said.

I was really nervous.

“Are you going to get out?” John said.

“Yea, but you’re coming with me,” I said.

“Nuh-uh. I’m staying right here in my truck, thank you very much,” he said.

“Why?” I asked.

“She could be a serial killer for all we know!” John said.

“Oh, come on! She’s my grandma!” I said.

“She could be a witch!” he said.

“Ok, Mr. Baby. You can stay in the truck, but I’m going in,” I said.

I opened the door and got out.

“Wait!” John yelled.

I turned around.

“What?” I said.

“I’ll come,” he said.

“Thank you, now let’s go,” I said.

We went up to the front door.

John looked at me, then quietly knocked on the door.

“Oh, I’m sure!” I said.

I rang the doorbell and looked at John.

“What? I’m scared,” he said.

I rolled my eyes and then the door opened.

I noticed that she looked just like me. Although, the older version of me. We had the same eyes and the same nose.

“Hi,” I said.

“Hello,” she said.

“Um, this may sound a little weird, but I think I’m your granddaughter,” I said.

She looked at me.

“I’m Tiffany,” I said.

She let out a cry.

“Oh my goodness! Tiffany! I haven’t seen you in so long!” she said.

She pulled me into a hug.

“Please come in!” she said.

I followed her in. I looked back at John.

“Oh, you can come in too honey,” she said to John.

“Oh. Ok,” John walked in hesitantly.

“Would you two like anything to drink?” she asked.

“Um, I’m good. Thank you,” I said.

“I’d like a coke,” John said.

I looked at him again.

“What?” he said.

“Ok. One coke coming up,” she went into the kitchen.

“Wow, John. You’re so weird,” I told him.

“How am I weird?” he said.

“Because you were all freaked out before we came here and then all of a sudden, you want a coke,” I said.

“I can’t help it. I’m thirsty,” John said.

At that time, my grandma came back in the living room.

“Here you go, uhh……”

“John,” he said.

“John. Nice name,” she said.

“Uh, thanks,” he said.

She sat down with a glass of water in her hand.

“So honey, how did you ever find me?” she asked me.

“Um, well, I was trying to find mom and dad but I learned that they’re……” I paused. “gone. So this nice lady at the library told me your address so I came here,”

“Well, why after all of these years did you just now try to find us?” she said.

“Actually, I had no idea I was adopted until a couple of days ago,” I said.

“Your parents should’ve told you,” she said.

“Yea, but I guess they didn’t want me to get mad,” I said.

“Yes. Well, I can also tell that there’s another reason why you decided to show up on my doorstep today,” she said.

“Told you she’s a witch,” John whispered to me.

“Shut up,” I whispered back.

“Right. Well, here’s the thing. Ever since I was little, I have noticed that I can do anything with time. Reverse, fast forward, and stop time. And I think that’s really cool, but I also want to know why I have these powers,” I said.

“Your parents didn’t tell you that either?” she said.

“Um, no,” I said.

“This may be a little hard for you to believe, but you’re something that we like to call a Verday,” she said.

“I believe it!” John said.

I ignored him.

“A Verday? What’s a Verday?” I said.

“Exactly what you just described. A Verday is someone who can change the concept of time. Most people have never heard of one because they’re very rare. Only one in a million people get the powers of a Verday,” she said.

“How do you know so much about this stuff?” I asked.

“Well, my grandmother was a Verday too. And so am I and so are you,” she said.

I was totally shocked.

“What about her mind reading powers?” John said.

“Mind reading powers?” she said.

“Um, yea. I can sorta read my ex-boyfriend’s mind. But it’s weird because I can only hear his mind, and no one else’s,” I said.

My grandma started pacing back and forth.

“Is there any chance that your ex-boyfriend is a werewolf?” she said.

“Yea. How’d you know?” I said.

“Oh, no. This is very bad,” she said.

“How is it bad?” I asked.

“Honey, are there any markings on you?” she said.

“Markings?” I asked.

“Yes, any kind of weird markings anywhere on your body?” she said.

“Well, now that you mention it, there is a weird marking on my side, but I think it’s a birthmark or something,” I said.

“Let me see it,” my grandma said.

I lifted up my shirt and showed it to her.

“It looks kind’ve like a paw print,” John said. “Hey, I found a clue!”

(Yes, John used to watch Blue’s Clues when he was little)

“I’m afraid you’ve been imprinted,” she said.

“Imprinted? What is that?” I said.

“It’s what a werewolf does when he finds his soul mate. It means you’re bound to your ex-boyfriend for life,” she said.
