Chapter 31

Avery's P.O.V.

After our run I allowed the white wolf to lead the way. Lazira told me his wolf's name is Kayden. He is a mighty hunter. One of the best they have. I laughed and said I'll be the judge of how mighty he is.

Kayden and his human lead us to a cottage. It was quite large. It seemed to easily fit over thirty people. As we got close I smelled a delicious aroma of home cooking. Potatoes, greean beans, corn bread, and oh, steak. Mmm I'm starving. Just as I thought this my stomach rumbled and Kayden growled out a hearty laugh.

Everyone in the group changed except me. I seem to have forgotten my clothes in a haste to leave earlier. The man who had kissed my hand approached me with a large shirt and basketball shorts.

"My name is Joseph." He introduced as he extended the clothes to him. I grunted an aknowledgement as I dipped my head in thanks and took the clothes between my teeth. I trotted to a thick set of bushes and changed quickly. I walked out towards the house, tousling my hair as I did so. An older lady emerged from the house with her greying hair pinned up in a bun. She was wiping her hands with apron around her waist. She gasped and covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes the moment they fell upon me.

"Princess!" She exclaimed as she bowed before me.

"Please, my name is Avery." I replied as I pulled her back into a standing position. Why do they keep doing that? I asked myself. I shook it off as the older lady grabbed my arm gently.

"Right this way Avery. I have just prepared dinner. Oh how delighful!" I followed her into the house as everyone else piled in and rustled for places at the table.

One young boy, maybe the age of fifteen, had shoved his hand into the bowl of dinner rolls and was just about to cram his mouth full when my father cleared his throat. The boy looked as if his life flashed before his eyes. He dropped the rolls on his plate as if they were filled with fire ants. He immediately apologized and handed the bowl towards me.

"Mi Lady, please do the honors of having the first taste." He spoke in a voice full of admiration.

I almost couldn't withhold my chuckle as I nodded my head to the boy.

"What is your name?" I asked gently.

"Peter miss. My name is Peter." He responded diligently.

"Well then Peter, if you don't mind, which of these looks the softest to you?" I asked.

He looked up in nothing short sheer shock. His mouth fell open and he almost dropped the bowl. He instantly snapped his jaw shut, straightened up, and looked ever so dubiously over the many rolls.

"Well miss, if it were me, I would not be able to pass up this one right on the edge here." He spoke as he pointed to the roll.

I peered at it for a brief moment and cocked my head to the side. I heard Peter gulp audibly in anticipation. "I do believe you are right." I exclaimed as I grabbed that roll and took a hearty bite of it.

Peter's face lit up with an incredible glow as grinned ear to ear. He sat back in his seat after placing the rolls back on the table.

Chuckles were heard all around the room as every fell into kind chatter. Not long there was food everywhere. On the table, falling off of plates, flying across the room and sticking to the walls. Yet all around laughter was heard. I could not help but grin. Despite the burdens on mg heart, this was a lovely distraction. This I could handle. The pitiful looks at home, not so much. I briefly worried for Travis. I left him alone when he is in as much pain as I. I just can't face him. I failed. I had one job. To protect my pups. And I failed.

I swallowed the lump in my throat as the elderly lady leaned to my ear. "Just like feasting with dogs." She laughed. "What rubbish." I gave her a kind smile as I returned to my meal.

Before I could get too lost in my thoughts again, I felt Lazira's presence.

"Something is going to happen. I feel it." She whispered.

Unedited. Please leave comments I love reading them. Again, my apologies for the long wait. I just wanted to throw something together for you all.
