Chapter 7
Alpha Matthew's POV
The fight was over. My pack members were all asking the same question. "Why were there so many rogues?" As bad as it may sound, that was not my biggest question. my biggest question was what took Travis so long?
He is my second in command. there's no way seven other members beat him here. He didn't show up till the last minute. And when he finally got here he wasn't alone.
I glared at the small grey rogue next to him. Something about her rubbed my wolf wrong. Normally he is all about respecting and protecting the she wolves. But not her. He wanted her blood.
She wasn't challenging me, however she did not show me respect either. Instead of lowering her head and keeping her eyes down in submission she simply ignored my presence and looked anywhere but at me. She was blatantly ignoring me.
I am an alpha. I deserve respect and I will get it. I allowed my wolf to push forward and snarl at her menacingly. she only flinched a little. She didn't even look my way.
Travis made a move to step between us but I snapped my jaws at him. Warning him to back off. Travis lowered his head and made no more actions to intervene.
I whirled on the grey rogue. I snapped my jaws and forced her to back up until she hit a tree. She finally lowered her head turned her gaze to the ground.
Satisfied by that small sign of respect, I left the grey rogue where she was and returned to assessing my pack members.
Travis walked over to me and began to mind link. " I apologize for the delay, though it seems like you had it covered. It won't happen again." I simply scoffed at him.
I figured I might as well get it over with, so I asked him, "Is that your mate?" He replied, "I believe so." I thought so. I turned away from Travis and looked toward Avery.
She was limping a few steps until she looked up. She stopped when she saw Travis. She seemed like she was going to cry. Can wolves cry?
I took my time analyzing her. She looked like death. Her coat was caked in blood. She had chunks of flesh missing from her hind leg, hip, neck and shoulder. I have no clue how she was still standing.
I need to get her out of here.
Avery is my best fighter. She equally matches my own skill. However, i noticed all the rogues swarmed her. The only ones that didn't, made sure to keep me and the other pack members too busy to help. She had four wolves on her at any given time. Sometimes more. This made my anger flare up again.
I turned back to Travis. "Do you know how much your selfish arrogance could have cost us today? Mate or not you have a duty to this pack! If you can't even bother to show up when lives are on the line, why are you even here?"
Travis looked dumbfounded before responding, "I had to make sure I could trust her first. She is a rogue after all." I heard the rogue grunt. Travis continued, "Her name is Bethany. I apologize for her blatant disrespect earlier, however she has never had an alpha to obey. She just doesn't know better."
I couldn't believe my ears. Avery was on the verge of fainting and he hasn't even taken notice. "I do not care who she is, where she is from, or anything! I am the alpha! I decide who is trusted and who isn't! And as of right now, she is not! I want her locked up."
Travis nodded his head. Then replied, "I understand alpha, but don't you think you're going a little overboard? No one got too badly hurt. Everyone is okay." My jaw literally hit the floor.
"Everyone is okay? No one got hurt? Why don't you open your fucking eyes! How are you going to tell me Avery isn't hurt?" I saw Travis turn his head to Avery. His eyes all but bugged out of his head.
I heard a low, pained whimper escape from her. I wheeled around on my haunches and ran to her side. Travis seemed glued in place. By the time I arrived next to her, Avery was on the ground. Laying in a pool of her own blood.
I nuzzled my snout under her neck and managed to hoist her onto my back. In a matter of seconds I felt her blood cover my own coat. This is bad. Her wolf isn't healing her. In fact, I can't sense her wolf at all.
My wolf reached out to her's. All we got in response was a heart wrenching howl. I closed the link. Her howl was so full of pain and tormoil it made my wolf whimper for her. Her mind was a dark cloud of heartbreaking sadness.
I had no doubt it was due to Travis's new "friend". No longer could I find the bubbly girl who brought smiles to all of our faces. I couldn't find the angel who lit up our world. She deserved better than that bastard. I know she takes my teasing and advances lightly but I would cherish her. I would hold this angel close and never let her feel this sadness again. I would love her.
As I was going on this rampage in my mind, I had run at breakneck speed for five minutes or so. Two minutes before we reach the pack doctor.
"Hold on Avery, we're almost there darling. Just a couple more minutes." I tried calling to her. But her presence in the pack link had faded. She was out of time. She didn't have two more minutes. Neither did I. Her heart had stopped beating
