Chapter 9

I was sitting under the black blanket when suddenly I felt a pull. The pull was literally coming from my heart. I kept hearing a "thud, thud." The pull in my chest catapulted me forward.

I let out a strangled scream, "Lazira! What's happening?" She simply sat up and began walking towards me. "It's time." was her only reply.

I looked toward the lightbulb and realized everything was white right now. The darkness had lifted but this place hurt. Everything hurt. My eyes, my head, my body, even my heart. I wanted my black blanket back. I don't want to be here!

I struggle against the thing pulling at my chest. I thrashed around and the pull lessened. The more steps I took away from the light, the less pain I felt. I was about to run away when Lazira snarreled at me. "Enough child! You will never get out of here if you do not accept it!"

I whimpered, "but it hurts, so much." "I know it does sweety, but it must be done." she soothed. I stopped struggling and braced myself for the pain. I didn't scream. I didn't thrash. I accepted the pain, like I always have.

Soon I was thrown into a tunnel and whirled around like a rag doll. I folded myself into a ball and squeezed my eyes shut. Suddenly a deafening noise erupted in my ears. I threw my hands over my ears to stop the screaching. I heard beeps and shouts, water falling, fans running, plastic rustling, more beeps. What on Earth is this place?

I kept my eyes shut. I refused to acknowledge the loud noises. Then, as if a whistle had blown everything stopped. Every noise halted except the slow beeping. Then one voice rang out. One I knew, but couldn't pinpoint.

"She's back. We almost lost her."

I was lost? where'd I go? I still didn't open my eyes. I wanted more info.

"Doc, how many times has her heart stopped?" That was alpha Henry. I could hear the agitation in his voice.

Who's heart stopped?

"Twenty three times in the past two weeks. That's why she hasn't been left alone for a second." was the response of the other voice.

A loud crash sounded somewhere near me and it caused me to jump out of skin. Quite literally. As I jumped from the sound Lazira took over my body. She made it shift into her wolf to protect me. I wasn't ready to come back yet. I could hear Lazira snarling as loud and ferocious as any wolf I've ever heard. She snapped her jaws and warned off our attackers. Hair raised, teeth bared, sparing no survivors from her threatening demeanor.

Then I heard alpha Matthew's voice again. "It's alright Avery, you're safe."
