Chapter 36
Avery's P.O.V
Travis and I were finishing up lunch in the pack infirmary. I had just wrapped up the garbage and stood to throw it away. Travis growled a low warning to a group of men who walked in the door.
I placed my hand on his shoulder as I recognized them from my father's pack.
"It's okay, they are a part of my father's pack" I reassured him.
Travis stopped growling but still placed himself between Lance and the men who entered.
I went to stand in front of the men and they bowed to me, each stepping to the side as my father entered.
"I hear our little prince is almost completely out of danger." He greets with a smile.
"He is getting stronger each day." I beam.
My father gives me a hug as he steps back. A more serious expression over his face now.
"We need to talk." He states. I'm a grown she wolf but I found myself wondering if all kids get this pit in their stomach when their parents use that tone. All I could think is, uh oh.
I motion for him to sit at the table we just cleared. I asked Travis to round up a few more chairs for the others and he nodded.
"So, uh, what is this about?" I questioned.
My father flicked his wrist and one more guard walked in with a boy behind him. Shackles on his wrists and ankles. I stood as I recognized the boy from Jeremy's prison like house. He was the one who was scared of what they were going to do to me.
"This boy surrendered when we ambushed that house to rescue you." My father explained. "We see no imminent threat from him. However, it is your choice as to what-"
"Release him." I interrupted. The guards nodded and my father hid a small smile. "He caused me no harm" I informed them. "He didn't want to be there anymore than I did." The boy smiled gratefully at me, "You're highness, it is an honor to be remembered by you." He spoke shyly.
"What is you name?" I asked him.
"Lukas" he responded with a downward glance.
"Do you have a home Lukas? A family?"
His eyes closed briefly with his next words, "Not anymore."
My heart ached for him. "Could we find him a position?" I asked my father.
He stood and gave me a wide smile.
"Done". My father walked to Lukas and said, "You will be given a room back in our town. Until then, you may accompany Seth and he will see to it you are fitted with an appropriate title based on your skills." Lukas bowed gracefully and a small, happy tear slid down his right cheek. Seth walked out with a wave to Lukas to follow him."Now, the hard part." My father sighed as he sat back down. I resumed my seat and Travis sat next to me, his hand in mine.
"I wish to tell you about your lineage. Who you are. And, who we believe Travis to be." He started.
Travis and I glanced at each other and awaited my father's words.
"Avery, you are my daughter. I am the king of Wolves. We are from the Dicci family. An ancient bloodline that goes back to the beginning of time. We are considered pure blood. Royals. Our powers greatly surpass those of the average wolf, such as the ones you have decided to take as your pack. Every one hundred years or so, a female is born. This female will have the ability to speak with her wolf from birth. She can shift at will in the blink of an eye. No waiting, no pain."
That explains while people always gasp when they see me shift in mid air and things. I knew other wolves couldn't shift or speak to their wolf until the age of puberty. I didn't know I was a rarity.
"Your mother, was a kind soul. The most beautiful she wolf I'd ever laid eyes on. She was from another royal blood line. Her compassion for others exceeded that of any wolf I've ever met. She welcomed everyone with open arms."
I stared at him with a Blank face. He's joking right? This is a sick joke.
"Ah, I'm very sorry. I have skipped some details. Your mother had a half sister. Ruby. She was born from a Human and like such, she was human. A very deranged human. She had mental health issues from the start but no one knew how severe until it was too late."
Shocked I spoke, "Are you telling me, the woman who raised me, the one I called my mother was NOT my mom?"
"That's correct. Your mother was my mate. And she would have never, in a million years laid a harsh hand on you child. She would have rather died herself."
"Where is she?" I asked passed the lump in my throat.
I noticed water pool at the edges of my father's eyes and the guards all looked to the ground.
"Eighteen years ago, there was a fire. A group of rogues had heard the next female she wolf had been born. They ambushed our walls and while everyone rushed to defend the territory, we failed to notice one loan wolf had been living within our walls for weeks."
I gulped as I felt I already knew the outcome. Travis rubbed my arm soothingly as I listened to my father's story.
"As all of our warriors were defending the line, it was only the maids in the castle. All women and children had been instructed to go to the basement in the event of an attack. Your mother was upstairs with you when a smoke bomb was thrown threw the window. She grabbed you and ran, But by that time rogues were already in our home. Setting fire to rooms and destroying everything in sight. It was utter turmoil. She had darted down the hall but the flames were too hot. She hunkered down in a bathroom with you after barricading the door. The smoke filled the room and your tiny lungs were collapsing fast. As I said before, royals have power that no regular wolf could dream of. Abby-" my father got choked up on her name and we waited as he tried to regain his composure.
"Your mother, curled into a bawl with you beneath her and the shower curtain over the two of you. As the oxygen left the room she held your tiny hand and took your pain. Simultaneously she transferred her life force to you. By the time we realized we had been fighting a diversion, it was too late. We got to the castle and most of the common rooms were ashes. All the women and children except the two of you and one maid had managed to get to the bunker in the basement. We searched high and low until I was able to find the bathroom you were hiding in. I could hear you crying. I broke the door and with one of my powers I was able to clear the smoke from the room. I snatched you up but your mother, she had given you her life to save you."
Once again, as always, I have not edited this. I was so excited to get another chapter out I just kept writing. I have completely re read the book to make sure I wasn't leaving anyone out. Leave me comments guys! I love to read your excitement! Who is still with me in 2017?!
