Chapter 37
Avery's P.O.V
Tears cascaded down my cheeks silently as my whole life just fell apart. Everything I thought I knew, turned out to be one big hoax. My mother, the woman I thought was my mother, isn't. That just left one question in my mind.
"You saw me back then." I stared at my hands as I began the question I so desperately tried to find an answer to. My father looked away, a foreign emotion hiding behind his dark eyes.
"You saw what she did to me. You called her my mother yourself. If you knew..." my throat had begun to constrict. "If you knew someone was hurting your little girl, why in the Hell would you leave her there?" I had rose from my seat at this point. Palms planted firmly on the table, Travis's hand all but forgotten.
My father cleared his throat, "You won't believe me, but it was safer for you with her than under my care."
"Bullshit!" I shouted. My hackles raised with a sudden wave of betrayal washing over me.
It was his turn to stand now. He met my glare eye to eye as he spoke again, "YOU are the female that was born this century. YOU were pronounced dead along with your mother. It was clear the attack was to harm you, maybe even capture you. Abby gave her life without a second thought to save you. I had to do everything in my power to see to it that it wasn't in vain."
My father sat back down. A tired look in his eyes as he sighed. "I brought you to your aunt Ruby. I hoped she could look after you, raise you as a human until the time came that we could claim you as the next queen."
I straightened up at that revelation. I don't want to lead a pack, let alone every single pack in existence. I mentally smoothed my fur down as I awaited the rest of his story.
"Your aunt Ruby knew what we were, what your mom was. I just didn't know how she felt about us. She believed we were abominations. Things that shouldn't exist. I swear to you Avery, had I any idea that she'd hurt you I would have found another way." He plead with me, nothing but sincere honesty lay beneath his eyes.
"Let him continue. We need to know the rest." Lazira made herself known. I was hesitant, but a slight nod of my head informed him I would listen.
"We had no idea who attacked us or where this threat could be lying. I figured if you were far out of reach, no one would suspect anything. It wasn't until you were to start school that I was able to meet you. You looked so much like your mother. Even more so now." I regained my seat with apprehension. I feel like I've been lied to since day one. Travis grabbed my hand again, sending encouragement to me through our bond.
"I thought we had finally figured it out. The other maid that didn't make it to the bunker, she was never accounted for. As it turned out, she was fairly new. She had started working within the castle only a month prior to the attack. Just long enough to learn the ins and outs of how we operated. She leaked every bit of info she attained to a group of rogues. To this day, we don't know who is leading them. I had a few men keep an eye on you. After I learned Ruby had been abusing you I made it very clear she was being watched. The orders were to not interfere unless she took it too far. We couldn't risk blowing the cover we spent years putting up. You have to understand Avery, I had no idea who I could trust. I had no idea if there was another spy within my walls, or two or a hundred. If I brought you back with me that day like I so desperately wanted, the charade would be up. Everyone in the world would hear that the princess was still alive. I couldn't risk your life."
I didn't know what to do with all this information. I just wanted to take my pup home, curl up and pretend we were nothing important. Just a family. Just regular wolves who could walk down the street and no one would notice us.
I figured, we might as well have all of the info.
I glanced to my right at the wolf who has been by my side for nearly 4 years now. "And Travis?" I asked softly.
"The night of the attack we had a few guest visitors. It is our belief they were attempting to wipe out all of the royal bloodlines in one swoop. A good of friend of mine named Charles Lavon had come to our home with his mate and pup. A male only around the age of 2 or 3. He was next In line to rule over Europe. That night Charles and his mate Claire were killed. We never found the young wolf. But it's said his wolf is black and he has a scar on the bottom of his right foot from that night." My father glanced at Travis at this point whose eyes resembled saucers. Travis removed his right boot and presented to all in the room, a scar he had no recollection of getting.
Unedited. Hope you guys are still hanging in there with me. I don't know how long this burst of inspiration will last but I'm trying to get to the main plot and answer all the background questions soon! Leave me comments!
