CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR

~Jacobs POV~

As soon as I got to the village, I knew something was wrong. The streets were dark and deserted. No villagers were in the streets and none of the lights were on.

The water glittered around me and nothing stirred

"Angie?" I shouted.

"Angie is safe, Jacob," a familiar voice said. "And so is your beloved Lily. But as for you, well, I can't say the same,"

I whirled around and was face to face with Griffin King, holding his long sharp dagger.

"You," I growled, my tone darkening. "Why are you here?"

"To finish what I started," Griffin laughed maliciously. "To kill you,"

With that he lunged at me, and swiped his dagger towards me. I caught his wrist, and he was left struggling to get his arm free.

"Wait a second," I asked as something dawned on me. "How are you...breathing?"

"I stopped at your friend Bartemius's house," Griffin grinned, gesturing to a string of pearls around his neck. "It's amazing that a scholar with as high stature as Bartemius Brown would keep jewellery,"

Griffin saw an opportunity while that sank in, and he twisted free of my grasp.

"What did you do to him?" I shouted.

"Nothing," Griffin shrugged. "That was part of the deal. The necklace in exchange for him and his wife's lives,"

"I never knew you to be one to honour your deals," I said.

Griffin kicked me in the stomach and I doubled over, silently cursing myself for getting distracted in the middle of battle.

Griffin swung his dagger again, but this time I was ready. I unsheathed my sword and metal clanged against metal as I blocked his dagger.

We sparred for a minute, then I twisted my sword against his, forcing him to let go of it or risk breaking his wrist.

It clattered to the ocean floor, and he bent to pick it up, but I kicked him in the shoulder and he went sprawling.

He tried to get up, but I put my foot on his wrist.

"Make a move King, and I step," I picked up his dagger, and his eyes widened, but I just threw it as far as I could. It disappeared into the water.

"What are you going to do now?" I grinned.

He smiled. "I still have one more card to play Jacob,"

His irises began to look like fire, crackling and glowing.
