The girls take Ashlyn to go clothes and makeup shopping, and the guys go walk around and take whatever they want to keep. Tris doesn't go with the girls, though. She heads to Tobias's apartment, though she has no idea why she does.
She opens the door and sits on his bed, not knowing what else to do. Tobias walks in a few minutes later, and almost jumps out of his skin. He wasn't expecting Tris to be here.
"Hey," he drops down onto the bed next to her. "What's up?"
Tris shrugs, looking at the floor. She hates how they're acting almost like strangers. What if-in two years from now, when she's considered an adult-he doesn't want her? What if he doesn't want me now? She thinks.
"Tris, something's wrong."
"I'm fine," she insists, then looks up at him. "But I'm not so sure about us."
He brushes her hair behind her neck. It's grown back to the length it was when he met her, even though it hasn't been more than a few months since they were in Amity. "What do you mean?"
"What I mean is," she sighs. "We've been acting like we don't really know each other. Maybe we just-" she cuts herself off. She doesn't want to say it. But Tobias just looks at her, still smoothing back her hair. He doesn't have any clue what she's going to say, though he has an idea. "Maybe we should just see other people." she says quietly.
He rolls his eyes. "Tris, do you really-"
"Yes." she snaps. "I think we can't do this. I couldn't handle the fact that it felt like Will's death, along with the deaths of my parents, Al, and Marlene's were all my fault. You couldn't stand the fact that I had worked with Marcus, even though it was for everyone else's good-" she makes a sad sound. "Maybe we were never really meant to be together."
"Tris-" He sighs.
"Don't you 'Tris' me."
"Fine then, Beatrice. I don't know what delusion you're acting under, but we're fine."
"No, we aren't. We are thousands of miles apart, and I'm talking about now as well as in a few hours when we both have to get back on those damn planes and fly to opposite sides of the country." She looks like she's about to burst into tears. She's standing up now and facing him.
"We can figure this out." He says. He knows that if she walks out of here, she'll leave Dauntless and probably won't look back. She'll find someone else, fall in love again, and get married. He can't stand the thought of her with someone else. "I'll move out there when I get the chance. Whatever you want, I'll do it." He's never sounded so desperate, except for when he'd begged his father to stop when he was younger. He stands and brushes some of her hair from her eyes. "We can fix this."
"No, we can't." The whites of her eyes are starting to turn red, like they do when she's trying not to cry. "Something's happened to us, and it's broken us. We can't be fixed." He rests his hand on her hip, and she's gripping his black T-shirt tightly in her fist. She looks down at the dark fabric clenched tightly in her hand. "You'll fall in love again." she says softly.
Tobias presses his forehead to hers. "That's a lie." He kisses her, holding her as close to him as he can. She doesn't resist, kissing him back with just as much passion.
Tris doesn't know why she's kissing him back. She's trying to stop them both from being hurt any more than they already are, and yet she's kissing him. She pulls away. "Tobias, I-"
"Don't. Please, don't." She nods, knowing that the words will tumble out if she doesn't keep her mouth shut. He pulls her down onto his bed, and they lay down together, like they used to. He lays on his back, staring at the ceiling, while she lays curled up next to him, her head resting against his chest. After a few minutes, he feels her fall asleep. Her deep breathing makes him tired, and he falls asleep knowing that she won't leave him.
A/N: Had to do a bit of a Fourtris moment there in the end. I wanted it to seem like I was going to split them up :)
