Melinda's POVHis panted breaths hit my face as he looks down at my scared presence. No words emit from his mouth as he quickly nods his head in a silent promise.
I gently close my eyes, exhaustion sinking in as the minutes pass by. Each minute that passes by I want to curl into a ball and get a much needed sleep. But unfortunately that won't be happening tonight.
Daryl slowly slid down the door and to the creaky wooden floors. He made room next to him and I greatly took the offer, sitting next to him on the dusted floor.
There was another incident much like this one that my mind quickly jumped to. One of which we were in the woods, much like tonight, and he pulled me against the tree in a heart beat. He did it before I even knew what was to come.
It made me realize that he had saved my life more than a few times. He was there on the highway, in the woods, he helped me when Tyler passed.
"Daryl?" I whisper. I look down at my hands and start to pick at the dirt that had layered my skin.
He hummed to acknowledge me. I was so close to him I could feel every time he breathed. His arm would lightly touch mine with a small heat as he inhaled, and then leave me cold as he exhaled.
"I- I just want to thank you." I stammer. I could feel him looking over at me. A look of what I wished would be admiration, but it was most likely confusion, or a look of 'I don't really care.'
I began to think of why I was thanking him. Why I had let the words fall from my lips. And it was because he made me feel things no other man could, he made me feel save in a world where safe isn't an option.
"Yeah." I bobbed my head up and down as I licked my chapped lips, "thank you."
A loud slam came from behind us as my back vibrated from the door being pounded on. I jumped and slapped my own hand over my mouth, in fear of any noise being pushed out of my lungs.
Out the corner of my eye I could see Daryl's hand lift from his leg and hesitantly reach for mine. But he second guessed it, and put his hand back in his lap as he looks forward into the black obis.
Groans could be heard from the cracks in the wood. You could make out the distinct sounds of leaves being pushed and slid against the forest floors as messy feet slid past them.
Slowly, I reached my hand out. His skin was warm as I traced my hand down his arm and grabbed ahold to his hand, lacing our fingers together in a comforting manner. I gave his hand a squeeze and sent him a small smile, even if it was to dark to see it.
"We're going to be fine." Although I didn't believe what I had said, it was true at the moment. We were quiet, walkers walked straight past us, not knowing of our presence.
I closed my eyes and leaned my head back softly against the old door. Sleep seemed impossible and I thought of the multiple scenarios that could happen in a split second. But I kept thinking of what I told Daryl.
We're going to be fine.
I kept repeating that line over and over in my head as my thoughts became more and more foggy as I drift into darkness.
But my last thoughts were of the man next to me who's hand I held within my own.
