Melinda's POV
The darkness had come and swallowed everything in sight within minutes. But as I was drowning in my thoughts, the sun was peeking it's bright rays over the hills little by little.
The time seemed to have flew by as I stare at where Daryls body lay peacefully. His soft snores come to an end as he rolls to his side, facing the wall. I knew he was awake, but I didn't dare say anything to break the quiet.
I remain still as I look out the far window. Each moment that passes, the sun gets brighter. It's gentle heat reaches out and warms my cold skin.
Leaves shuffle in the distance, my back straightens as I lean off the wall. Daryl's crossbow was gripped tightly in my small hands as I stand and shift over to the window. I view the surrounding area closely, not seeing a soul. I sigh as my shoulders relax.
But before a next move could be made a growl was heard, and before I could react a walker steps in front of the window banging it's bloody mutilated hands on the clear glass.
I jump as a small yelp effortlessly escapes me. I take a step back and reach my hand to my beating chest.
"What is it?" Daryl sits up in a heart beat as he reaches for the knife on his side. When I turn he's already facing me.
"Just a walker. I got it." I mumble as I trek to the unstable door. I effortlessly push it open and hear the walkers beating die down. It's feet shift quickly as it makes its way around to find its next victim.
It's decomposed body rears around the corner. I raise my bow immediately taking aim for the creatures head. It's bony fingers reach out for me and I almost feel bad for it. I shake my head at the dumb thought and within a blink of an eye, I pull the trigger.
It's body comes toppling to the ground as gravity takes its toll. I slowly walk up and rip the arrow from the soft tissue of its skull. It's black blood sprays the tops of my shoes. I wipe the arrow on the walkers jeans and proceed to walk back into the shed.
"We should probably be going back to the farm. All the walkers had to have left by now." Daryl reaches out for his crossbow as he begins to pass me. I gently hand it to him as I follow slowly behind.
"Right." I whisper.
Step by step we took I lost more faith in finding anything. Anyone. I lost faith in humanity. I lost faith in surviving. I lost faith in living.
The only ray of sunshine I had was the man in front of me. Even if he didn't know he was the only thing I had right now. Even if he didn't agree. It was just me and him against the world.
"Daryl?" I lightly say as I skip to catch up to him. He hums to acknowledge my presence and glances my way. "What if we don't find them?" I worry.
He looks down at my question. His feet move more quickly as a response. Almost like he didn't like the thought of it, or he couldn't stand being with me for longer than he had to. I was beginning to think he wouldn't answer. But then he cleared his throat and picked up his head.
"That question is dumb. We'll look for them until the day we die. We don't give up. That's what." His lightened attitude took me for a spin as I wasn't to used to seeing it on him. But it was nice.
"Okay." I whisper. I wanted to ask him so many more questions. Just so I knew I wasn't alone. Just so I knew I wasn't the only one that was thinking about what was to come. I wanted his opinion. I wanted for him to tell me what was to come so I had a better look through someone else's eyes. Someone to tell me to look at the brighter side of things if possible.
