Melinda's POV
"We need to stay somewhere while looking for them. We can't keep running around like this." I puff. "Winters already here. It's getting too cold to keep staying outside at night." I bring to his attention.
We had spent another day walking aimlessly around the forest. Then having to stop, and sleep on the dead, cold ground. That didn't compare to the night before last, when I got the best nights sleep I had gotten in a long time, even if the mistress was old and falling apart.
He breaks apart the rods that hold the tent up and place them in the bag they came from.
"I know. Don't ye think I know that?" He snapped. Today has already begun like one of our many others. Fighting.
"I just think we need to think of a plan to find them. Like signs or something." I shrug. I roll up the tent and begin stuffing it into its bag.
"Yeah, so the claimers can find us? Smart Mel." He scoffs. My mouth falls open at his rudeness.
"Not something that says 'follow us'. Just something that they'll get." I clarify.
"Yeah, and I can fly over the trees and spot them from the air." The sarcasm in his voice is rich.
"You know what, you do what you want. Just do it without me." I snatch my bag and crossbow from the ground and stomp off in the opposite direction. A string of profanity spills from my mouth.
"Mel!" I heard his voice slightly echo. But I didn't stop walking. He was a great tracker, he could track me if need be.
"Dammit. We can't find them when we're split up!" I stop once I hear his statement. I stare ahead, contemplating my options at this point.
I roll my eyes once I realize he's right. I tighten the straps on my book bag and begin to back track to him. He meets me half way with a crooked half grin.
"Glad ye gave in." He gloats. I heavily sigh, but don't take my eyes away from him. He drives me crazy, in more ways than one.
"Let's just find somewhere to stay." I change the subject. The argument was over quickly, but that didn't mean that it didn't annoy just as much as one any longer.
"We need to head that way." He points to the left of where we were heading. "We'll find the road if we keep that way." And just like that, the anger that possessed our bodies were gone. It was almost scary how quickly our emotions played.
But like Daryl said, we took a sudden left and kept straight. The crisp air made it seem as if time slowed down and the travel became longer. But with our bodies cold as ice, we probably were moving significantly slower.
My nose was dry from the bitter air. My eyes seemed to have froze in their sockets. The moisture in my lips was sucked dry by the winter wind.
"We need to find thicker coats too." I shiver. I cross my arms over my chest in hopes of getting warmer.
"We'll find a place soon Mel." I could feel him looking at me. His crystal eyes reminded me of thick ice, which made his stare send a shiver down my spine.
"Hopefully we'll find a lot of things soon." I murmur.
"What are ye talking about?" He climbs over a fallen log in front of us, then turns around, and offers me a hand. I grab ahold of his hand, and throw a leg over the log, the other following. I hold his hand for a second longer before I realize he ask a question.
"Thank you." I whisper, letting go of his hand. "And I mean our family. A cure. A safe place to live. Answers. We just need a lot of things, and I hope we find them." I could see the road up ahead as we talk.
"I wouldn't get my hopes up about that cure." He replies. I look at him confused.
"Well why not? Even Jenner told us at the CDC that scientist around the world were working on it. What makes you think that someone hasn't got something?" I question him. He shrugs his shoulders in return.
"Well Daryl, I'll bet you right now that you're going to make it out of this. I bet my life on it." While it may come out as a joke, I was doing anything but joking. I would jump in front of a bullet for him. I'd do anything to make sure he's safe, and that he makes it out of this nightmare alive.
"I wouldn't bet yer life on someone like me. Something can happen at any second." We step onto the asphalt, look both ways, and see nothing but open road and the tree line. Without saying a word, we both turn right and decide that to be our path of travel.
"Well I know you'd risk your life for me." I knock his arm with my elbow and watch as he looks down at me. We both knew what I was getting at, we both knew he'd do and has done everything to keep me safe. All because he loves me. And we were both thinking it right now.
He nods his head and looks straight again, but this time coming to a halt. I look in the direction he's looking to see a small community of houses. Every house was in a perfectly straight line, the size of each building were very similar.
"Found where we're gonna stay." Daryl mumbles.
