Emily was tugging onto the sheets, her head pounding and her hair spread against the fluffy pillows. Her body was sweaty from the lack of air conditioning, and she found her hand tugging onto her head as a headache took over. This might have been from last night's celebration party.
She took some pills from the kitchen cabinet after stumbling on her naked feet. This was so wrong, she thought. This wasn't supposed to happen, but it did- all because of Harry. Ugh, her head was pounding and it was all she could comprehend at the moment. She decided to take a shower to make sure she felt better after - a shower could work, right?
After finally finishing her English Degree and graduating with really vibrant colors -royal blue and mustard yellow-, Harry had offered to take her out on a night out as a small treat and she politely declined. But Harry was Harry and he had his ways so she was literally forced out of her robe and into some black dress that Harry found hidden in her closet.
Yes, Harry was her best friend that she met in college -and apparently Emily was the only person that went along with his annoying rants and glamorous attitude- but they went along together. Luckily for her, Harry was a great friend, and she wasn't sure how she would have survived the past three years at the New York University without him.
Speaking of Harry, she remembered that they were supposed to have another trip to some kind of fashion show in London before heading back home to Mullingar. She had already finished packing -well except for some stuff in the toilet and kitchen but you get the picture-, and they were soon to be off for London and home sweet home.
Walking out of the toilet, her hair damp on her back and a towel tightly wrapped around her body - she walked over to her bed noticing her phone blaring nonstop. She grabbed it and grinned when she saw her mother ringing. She had been calling her since two days ago, but Diana wasn't one to be with her phone 24/7, so it explains a lot. Yesterday was quite hectic, so she had forgotten to reach her again.
"Mother!" Emily spoke after sliding her thumb across the touch screen of her android. "Where have you been? I am excited to finally tell you that I am a college graduate! Yeay!"
There was no response on the other side, and Emily re-checked her ringtone volume but it was already at its maximum level. "Mother?"
"Emily, it's me. Maura." Emily frowned, and found herself gripping onto her towel slightly tighter.
"Oh, Maura. It's lovely to be talking to you, but is everything alright?" Emily couldn't restrain the worry in her voice, it wasn't possible. "Mother hasn't been answering my calls."
"Yes, she's right beside me, honey." Emily could hear the delicate tone of Maura's voice. She had always liked Maura, and took her in like a second motherly figure. Well, she was a mother anyway.
"Well, can I talk to her?" Emily asked, slightly content knowing that she was alive and spending time with Maura. Would Harry and her be like that in the future? She chuckled mentally at the thought.
"Well, about that Emily, um, I think you should come home, soon."
-------
After the talk on the phone, and quickly calling an understanding Harry - she was finally back in Mullingar after taking the closest plane ticket back home, and she would do it in a heartbeat, all because of Diana.
Maura watched as Emily's grip on Diana was delicate yet firm, and as pale and devastating Diana looked, Emily took it well. Maura knew Emily was having trouble listening to what the doctor had said, and what Maura had discussed with Diana - but she nodded and smiled and no tears dripped.
Emily talked to Diana, about her classes and lecturers' and how the graduation went and she shook her head when Diana kept teasing her with Harry even though she denied it and said that Harry was a homosexual anyways.
They were now at home, after three days of probation and being severely checked by the doctor -no matter how much Diana had rejected the need to, because what was the point- but Emily was happy to see her back at home for her to be taking care of her dying mother.
Maura was there, constantly helping Emily along but realized that Emily had a hold of it quite professionally. Maura hadn't expected any less than that, but realizing that Emily was so strong amazed her. She was brave, handling her mother who could die anytime on her, and she accepted it how it was without any arguments.
Diana was now asleep, and Emily handed a cup of coffee to her, and she gratefully accepted it. After taking a few sips, Emily smiled at her.
"you should be heading home, I'll be here for mother if she needs me." Emily said, and Maura nodded, understanding what Emily meant. She had a husband and two grown up sons but she had to run her errands and whatnot.
Maura smiled at Emily, and grabbed her hand. "I know dear, I just wanted to help. I'll always be here if you need me, okay? She means a lot to me." Maura wanted to help Emily, she needed to vent some other way if it wasn't to her.
"Thank you Maura, for taking care of her when I wasn't there." Emily said, almost making it seem like a whisper.
"There's nothing to worry about, you know I'd do it no matter what." Emily nodded and took a sip of her coffee before holding it in her lap again.
"You must understand that she won't make it any longer." Maura said, trying to let Emily understand that. Even though she was all grown up, it was like another reality check, even for herself.
Emily smiled faintly. "I know Maura, and as hard as it is, I have to be strong for her. She wouldn't want me sad, would she? But the life of the dead would always be in the memory of the living." She paused, trying to restrain a small chuckle before looking up at Maura. "And I know she will always be with me, no matter what. And I'll have to be strong to understand that."
Maura nodded, highly ashamed of herself for thinking that Emily was going to break down in her arms. But she was a strong girl, a strong lady who made herself believe that anything could happen and she'll still be the same. Maura loved this passionate side of Emily, it was a rare characteristic to possess.
She found herself choking on her tears. "Diana's so lucky to have you, honey," Emily gasped and walked over to the seat where Maura sat and held her shoulders, slowly rubbing down her spine.
"She's lucky to have you too Maura, please don't be sad." Maura laughed through her tears before quickly wiping them away and leaned into Emily's touch.
They knew that Diana would soon be another passing, but always be a loving memory.
