Maura was sitting at the dining table, having breakfast with her husband while she flipped through her magazine and her husband with the newspaper. The door was suddenly smacked open and there stood her son, the baby of the family really. Well, until Theo took his place, but he was always her baby.
Grown up baby.
"Niall James Horan, where were you last night?" Her voice was stern, even though she didn't have the heart to scold him for skipping dinner. He wasn't one to listen and obey her instructions anyway.
"I was out Ma, it was nothing to be pricky about." He huffed, after grabbing a toast from the table. He walked around the table, reaching the coffee maker and made himself a cuppa with a lot of milk.
"Well, you could've at least answered your phone." She said, eyes never leaving her handsome son.
Niall chuckled. "Ma, I'm a grown man. Can't you let me live a little?" He walked over to his father who shook his head playfully at his actions. Such a fatherly thing to do. "I'm here now, aren't I? Still alive and well!" he said, and patted his father on the back.
She shook her head, making the father and son duo laugh along to her actions.
Niall was a grown man alright, his age similar to Emily's and having his own business here and there made Maura proud to call him hers. But the fact that Niall also had a job singing at the pub made him drunk almost every time he came home made her worry all the time. Maura disapproved, but as he said -he was a grown man.
Niall was nothing like Emily, and that explained a lot. He was this spoiled brat, who managed to grow up wonderfully managing this and that on his own but failed to manage himself emotionally.
Maura disliked the fact that her son whom she loved dearly was coping with life but his personality was still lousy and cold and she wanted someone to thaw her son. Niall wasn't that cruel but he didn't care about feelings. Sleeping around with ladies made she understand that Niall wanted affection but he didn't know how to gain it. At least, that was what she hoped it was.
"I'll be off to see Diana today." Maura informed her husband and he nodded before kissing her on the cheek and closing the door behind him. Niall was on the chair across from her, devouring his plate of toast.
"Emily's back in town, Niall. She's taking good care of her mother, you should come along with me." She said, mentioning Emily and wanting to see how Niall responded to her name.
Niall shook his head. "Nah, Emily's a big girl Ma. She can take care of herself. Send my regards to Diana, I hope she gets well soon." He took another bite of toast before looking back at his mother with a large grin on his face.
Maura scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Niall, are you serious-"
"Ma, I have other plans okay." He interrupted before standing up and heading for the kitchen sink. Maura decided to shut her mouth, and continued flipping through the magazine.
-----
Emily was reading a book when Maura arrived, and Diana was groggily awake.
"Niall sends his regards to both of you," Maura lied and watched as Emily smiled. "He couldn't come today, had some plans and all."
"Oh, it shouldn't be a problem, he should be busy, being successful and all." Emily smiled, grabbing a seat for Maura to sit by Diana. "Please send my regards to him as well, I wish him all the happiness in life."
Maura groaned internally at how bad she felt for lying, but nodded and muttered something like 'will do' or 'yeah'. Niall was such a jerk compared to Emily, she thought. Sincerity dripped from her words, and that made her feel such an adoration for her.
"Please excuse me, I'll go and tidy the kitchen for a while. Please make yourself at home, Maura." She smiled and left the room, after kissing Diana's forehead. Maura's heart soared at the affectionate action.
Diana urged for Maura to come closer to her, and Maura chuckled before sitting next to her on the bed. They held hands, and Maura gripped it tighter.
"You're lucky to have Emily. She's so strong." Maura said, and Diana nodded. The smile on her face made everything seem so sad, and her lip quivered slightly.
"I don't want to leave her alone, Maura. She doesn't deserve me leaving her. She knows that, and I want her to be happy after me going. I want her to have a happy future without me. Someone needs to be there to take care of her." Tears slipped down her cheek, and she hastily wiped them away. "I want her to have someone."
Maura sighed, and spoke. "I'll always be there for her. She'll always have me, you know that Diana."
"But you have a family, a whole other life other than the both of us. She won't have anyone other than me. I just want her to be happy."
Maura nodded, she understood what Diana meant. It would never be the same once she leaves, but that would be where Emily would most probably break down.
She needs someone to rely on, to depend and give her heart to. Maura can't be the one for her, someone else needs to be the shoulder to cry on for Emily.
That was when she had the perfect idea.
