The Doctor grinned to himself as he faced the door of the Tardis, excitedly waiting to reveal to his new companion a whole new planet. A million and one - or maybe a million and two - possibilities sprung up in his head and he made mental notes of his favorite bets.
"Ready?" He asked as he she drew up by his side, backpack slung over her shoulder. She looked quite military with a open beige jacket with multiple pockets hanging open over her tight black vest. Beige cargo - like pants just a shade darker than her jacket completed the look and the tips of her converse style shoes peeked out from under the up-turned trouser legs.
She had a good choice in shoes.
The Doctor approved of this.
"Let's go!" She said pressingly, placing her hand on the door of the Tardis.
"Weeeell- only if your sure..."
"I'm sure."
"Allons-y!" grinned the Doctor as together they threw the door open.
The Doctors grand expectations were cut unexpectedly short as the open doors revealed nothing but a small circle of light emanating from the Tardis' open doors. Everything else was pitch black. "Ah."
"Hold on..." Kitty swung her backpack around and fumbled around inside of it for a second before pulling out two torches, handing one to the Doctor.
She flicked hers on and stepped outside the Tardis. Shining the yellow light in front of her to a dazzling effect. The light rebounded from clear crystals, causing flashes of rainbow light which gleamed brilliantly off snowy white crystalline walls.
"Wow..." She gasped as she moved the beam of light slowly around her and upwards, catching long crystal spears jutting in all directions from a high rocky ceiling. The Doctor, closed the doors of the Tardis and joined her , enjoying both her awe and this beautiful sight. For a few silent moments they stood there, taking in the incredible scene, their torch light creating small rainbows stretching across the floor.
"....Is it me- or is it really, really hot in here?" Kitty broke the silence turning to the Doctor, a rainbow cast on one side of her face and rippling in hair. The light catching her eyes, making them appear a pure green rather than the hazel they usually were.
The doctor smiled.
"Doctor?" she rose an eyebrow at him, crossing her arms and causing the rainbow to disappear. "wow.." She fanned herself "....It really is hot in here."
"60 degrees centigrade-" The Doctor stated looking up at the ceiling, he stuck his palm up and caught a drop of warm water dripping from one of the giant crystal spikes above. "Humid too...."
"Over here- here they are!" A loud shout interrupted them and the lights of 8 other torches filled the entire cavern with light and rainbows. As a band of people clad in thick looking black suits- the kind of thing that looked like a cross between scientists hazard suits in horror films and the kind of thing you'd wear to the moon in the 1920's- clambered into the cavern, surrounding the pair of them. Coming to sudden stop.
"Who the bloody hell are you?!" Asked the tallest figure at the front of the small crowd.
The doctor covered his eyes from the bright white torch light shone directly at him, squinting slightly. "I'm the Doctor-and you are?"
"Doctor eh? and who's this? Your nurse?" The husky male voice turned and shone his torch at Kitty, who squinted in the brief bright light before it was turned back to the Doctor. "And what's a Doctor doing here? What business could you possible have here? Your either lying or your not telling me the whole truth mate."
"Isn't that, the same thing?" The Doctor sighed from behind the shadow of his hand
"You being smart with me?"
"I'm smart with everyone, can't help it. Comes with the job description. "
"What Job description is that then?"
"Time lord."
"Darren it's getting hotter-they don't have suits..." A female voice chimed in, she was holding a large device of some kind in her gloved hand.
"Where's your suits?" Darren, who had turned to acknowledge the voice turned back to them, once again shining his torch light right in the Doctors face. He seemed to have annoyingly good aim.
"Suits?" Kitty asked, receiving a dazzling flash of light.
"Yeah- you're suit, you don't come here without anti-heat suits."
"We-" The torch light bounced back into the doctors face "Right- will you stop doing that!"
"What?"
"Lower your torch!" The light slowly lowered and the Doctor shook his head to relieve some of the sparkly lights in his vision. "Right, now where's 'here'."
"Is that a trick question?"
"No."
"Are you a cop?"
"What? No." The light rose straight into the doctors face suddenly again.
"Doctor- It's getting really, really hot..." Kitty mumbled beside him and he risked glance at her. He could see some small beads of sweat on her forehead, some of her hair sticking to her neck.
"Right-" The doctor gritted his teeth "I'mtheDoctor- I'mnotacop, I'matraveller, wehavenosuits, it's60 degreesinhere- withaveryhighhumiditylevel- ThisisKitty- sheisalsonotacop-sheiswithme, she'smy companion- shealsohasnosuit. Nowthatwe'veintroducedourselves, Ithink, youcandothepolitething andtakeussomewhereoutofthisheatandtelluswhereweareatleast." He spoke so fast he wasn't even sure if the small group of people understood him completely as they seemed to be glancing between themselves through the visors of their suits.
"What?" said the Husky voiced man.
"He basically said" panted Kitty "We aren't cops and we have no suits."
"Darren" The female voice snapped as she appeared to be inspecting her little device again.
"Right- Alright- Grab them...get the ice jackets- we're heading back."
He gave the order and turned around shaking his head.
"What about...?" a young male voice asked as he passed.
"I know- we'll keep looking- I promise." Darren's gloved hand patted the shorter ones shoulder.
Two others opened a large box, filling the air with steam. They pulled out two stiff heavy looking jackets, styled almost like bomber jackets and handed over to the Doctor and Kitty.
Kitty gratefully took the cold item.
"Put in on and do it up, cover your head with the hood." came the breathy instruction from the woman with the odd device. Kitty did so. The jacket felt like she was wearing a slush puppie, as heavy ice seemed to slosh around inside the material. The cold was very welcoming. She found that the sleeves didn't end but instead turned into gloves. She struggled for a second with the zip, until the Doctor gave her a hand, zipping up the jacket for her and taking her newly gloved hand, pressing her torch into her other.
"Follow us." The woman with the device waved over her shoulder as the small group set off into the dark.
"Where are we Doctor?" Kitty asked in a low whisper. "What is this place?"
"Hopefully- not where- or when I think it is." He replied quietly as they stepped further and further into the pitch black cavern.
