"Well?" Kitty pulled to sudden halt beside the doctor as they reached the end of the gentle sloping hill.
"Well, what?" Mumbled the Doctor spinning around to squint back up to the church.
Father McClellan stood in the doorway looking down at them.
"I know what you are." A voice hissed suddenly, forcing itself into his mind.
"And what is that exactly?" Replied the Doctor outloud.
"Our Enemy."
The Doctor winced as the answer pressed into his mind spoken by a hundred different hissing voices. Father McClellan retreated into the church, shutting it slowly, still watching.
"-supposed to tell me! ....Doctor? Are you okay? Doctor are you listening to me?" Kitty tugged at his tie and surprised by this odd action he gave a start and turned back to her. "Doctor?" Her expression was quizzical and a little wary.
"Hmm." The Doctor scratched the back of his neck and tugged his ear.
"So?" she pressed.
"Uh-what? Sorry." The Doctor was listening, feeling for the voices that had spoken to him but he could feel nothing but silence with an undercurrent of tingly.
"What were you listening too?" Kitty crossed her arms.
"This" he replied placing his hands on her shoulders "is exactly why I like you Kitty Welsh." He gave her a grin. "They can speak to me on a....different wave length-they're psychic! well, not psychic-telepathic! Ohh that might explain tingly..."
"Tingly? Telepathic?" Kitty rose an eyebrow and then gave a sigh "If you say so....and what did they 'say' ?"
"They said they know what I am....and then they said I'm their enemy...."
"Why? What did you do?"
"Nothing-yet. Maybe. I don't know."
The Doctors chain of thought was inturrupted by a sudden burst of Church Bells. The loud ringing tearing through the heavy silence iniated a flurry of movement. Doors opened everywhere and bodies flodded out. Cloudy eyes all staring towards the church as they formed an orderly queue and shuffled forward.
The loud ringing made Kitty cover her ears but there was something else the Doctor could hear a call, a message whispered amongst the bells. If only he could focus on it...His brow furrowed in concentration and he clenched his jaw.
"...cleanse.....come......rejuvinate...."
The queue began shuffling forward up toward the church hurriedly. The Doctor noticed their brows all beaded with beads of sweat......or was it?
Boldly he stepped forward to a man in his thirties, dressed in a bloodied butchers apron and with a swipe of his finger collected some 'sweat' and stuck it in his mouth.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!?" he heard Kitty cry over the Bells as the taste hit him.
Again, that barely-there salty lithiumy taste. "Lithiumdichloridenitroxiderubiamate! HA! You're made out of it! You ARE it!" His exclamation was made all the louder by the sudden stopping of the Bells. The Queue paused and all together they turned and faced him. Shuffling quickly into a circle, surrounding them.
"Very Clever." The voices hissed inside his mind.
"Oh No, no, no...If you want to speak to me-You speak to me out loud!" The Doctor shouted out.
"Um..What's going on?" Kitty asked, backing into him as the circle around them tightened.
"We're getting answers." He replied over his shoulder.
"Could we not get them in....another way?" Kitty backed into him further as the circle of bodies pressed in again. Thier cloudy white eyes staring blankly back at them.
"That's close enough." The Doctor commanded.
"You will leave us be. You will leave. You will GO." The crowd spoke as one, angrily.
"Oh, I'm not going anywhere." The Doctor replied defiantly. "What are you?"
"What are we?" The crowd replied "What are you? Lonely Angel, Oncoming Storm, Destroyer of Worlds, Spaceman, Theta Sigma, Prisoner 177781, Bringer of darkness, John Smith.."
"That's enough," The Docor warned.
"So many names for such a singular creature."
"Yeap, only one me. 100% unique! Just one."
"The last one."
"Just me."
"So much weight on your shoulders Doctor. Who do you heal? Who do you Help? When you carry so much death & sorrow in your wake."
"Me." Kittys answer shocked him for a second. "He helps, Me.... He helps a lot of people."
The crowd laughed, a short, harsh burst of gleeless chilling laughter.
"I said, that's enough. " He said sternly. "I'm not here to play mind games." he thought, directing it out to them. "I'll ask you again-what are you?"
Every single person that made up the circle, slowly lifted a single finger to thier mouths in reply.
"Oh great-that's a really informative answer." Kitty sighed. A second later she doubled over in pain, clutching her head. All the many pairs of cloudy eyes glaring at her sightlessly.
"Stop that!" The Doctor commanded "Stop that now! Whatever you're doing stop it!"
"Consider that a warning. Leave us be. Leave us. You will go. Walk away Doctor, You cannot win this War. The darkness is coming and there is no escape. You can feel it in the air, racing towards you. They will find you. They are looking. Tearing apart time and space to weed you out."
The Doctor, sheltering Kitty, was about to ask 'who is coming?' but the circle was broken & the bodies slid backwards, hisisng and screeching and cursing as buckets of water splashed over them. The Church Bells began ringing violently and they hurried to heed it's call.
"A baptism will take place Doctor-the young one will be lost to you and so will this place!" The strong hissing voice pressed into his mind as Nora and Peggy reached them, empty buckets in thier hands and began pulling them back toward their little shop-back to relative safety.
