The two women watched tensely as the leaves and low branches of undergrowth twitched with the movement as whatever it was rushed towards them.
Kitty's hand instinctively hovered above the pocket where her slim worn out sonic pen was tucked, twitching in anticipation as a figure exploded out from the middle of two vast bushes. Ordinarily, birds would have burst fro their hiding places to accompany this sudden surge of movement but as the two women stared at the figure, the eerie silence pressed in on them.
"Peggy!" The figure rushed forwards crying out loudly.
Kitty relaxed as Peggy leapt off her bike and crouched down to the young girl who ran to embrace her.
Her face a little mucky and streaked with tears. Her white dress stained with smears of dirt and a little torn from snagging on brambles.
"Lottie!" Peggy embraced the young girl and then held her at arms length looking seriously at her "are you okay."
Lottie sniffed and nodded her head, curly blonde hair bouncing.
"Where's Maggie?" Peggy's tone filled with anxiety as she stood back up staring hopefully into the undergrowth & trees.
Lottie sniffed loudly again and shook. Covering her face as she began to sob.
"Don't cry, it's okay. It's okay." Peggy knelt again to comfort the girl "Please, tell me, where's Maggie?"
"She-she-she" breathed the girl in-between her sobs "she wasn't fast enough-they took her. Tom tried, we both did. It was so scary Peggy, they just came & there was so many of them."
"So many of what?" Kitty asked, making the girl give a start.
Lottie leaned into Peggy warily. "It's okay Lottie, This is Kitty-she's a friend." Peggy said placing a hand on the girls shoulder.
The little blue eyed girl gave Kitty a wary glance before mumbling "The people from the church."
Kitty looked at Peggy and Peggy swallowed, her mind filled with worry and fear of losing her only daughter.
"We'll take Lottie back to the village, The Doctor and I will get Maggie back, don't worry."
Peggy didn't know why, but she felt the determination in Kittys voice and it eased her fear. She couldn't explain why but she trusted these two strangers who felt as odd as they appeared.
"what?" Nora asked brow creasing.
"Lithium." he repeated "or traces of it......."
"Lithium??" Nora questioned sharply cutting into the Doctors racing thoughts
"It's a chemical element discovered in 1817 by Johan August Arfwedson-there's a trace of Lithium in all living things but it's not vital-usually it's an alkai metal but in this case, it seems to be liquid.....or......OH" he paused eyes widening "Yes! YEEES! lithium REACTS WITH WATER!! but there is no gas-is there gas?" He paused again taking a deep long sniff before concluding "ah, right, Oridnary Hydrogen is odourless, of course but..but...but...." The image of the two old ladies reaction to the water being thrown over them came into his mind "Oh. Yes. That is odd....This is odd" he gestured to a few drips of water dripping from the tap and again leaned in to inspect it. "Lithium...Lit-he-um...hmm...perhaps not entirely Lithium in it's original state-which would make sense as that's why there's only traces of it, but there's still some chemical reaction going on, some sort of....oddness...not quite exactly lithium but nearly lithium..." the Doctor closed his eyes to better focus on the various compounds and chemicals rushing through his mind, trying to pin point a specific one that matched his train of thought..."Lithiumdichloridenitroxiderubiamate! HA!!!" He slammed a palm down on the table as his eyes burst open. "Otherwise known as Hydlithiumoxide M3 or 'Fools water' due to it's ability to be carried in small amounts of water and it's lengthy reaction to it....which explains what's happening here-or at least part of what's happening here."
