The Doctor stepped out into the dull overcast street. The atmosphere felt heavy but something static lingered in the air. A low barely visible mist seemed to hang around the trunks of depressed looking trees and garden walls. He turned his eyes toward the church and gave a start.
Two elderly women stood blocking his path, if he had intended to venture toward the church, linked arm in arm. Wide smiles that did not reach their eyes spread half heartedly across their slightly wrinkled faces.
"Oh." Kitty said as she stepped up to the Doctors side, she cleared her throat. "hello."
"Hello." The two old ladies said sharply in unison giving a timely nod to Kitty before snapping their eyes and their smiles back to the Doctor.
The Doctor furrowed his brow for a moment, regarding them. He was suddenly aware of more eyes on him & he glanced around. He caught the twitch of a few curtains and a few figures in the distance standing in the church yard. The air around him felt....odd. Very odd indeed. His fingers twitched as he thought of his sonic tucked In his jacket pocket but something told him that move would not be wise. He felt Kitty give him a nudge on the elbow and he flatly smiled back to the two ladies before he said "Well."
"Well?" Kitty hissed quietly "is that it?"
"Looking a little lost there dears." Said one of the old ladies. She wore an apron, dusted with flour over a floral pink dress. Her grey hair scooped into a loose bun.
"Not from around here are you?" Asked the other who wore a light blue shawl over a matching dress. Her neatly groomed hair hung in loose curls a little darker than the other ladys and more streaked with grey rather than grey all over.
"Uh-No. No we're not. We're from London." Kitty mumbled weakly.
"From London." they said in unison, those creepy smiles stretching on their faces again.
"Oh I'd say much further than London. Wouldn't you?" Said the one in the shawl turning to the other.
"Oh yes. Much further than London Mavis." The other replied.
"Much further than London." They said together sharply, eyes narrowing for a second.
"Right." The Doctor said slowly as his senses tingled warning him of surrounding danger. He took a side step backwards unconsciously.
The two women took a step forward staring blankly at them.
"Have you come all this way to see our little church?" Asked the one in the shawl tilting her head to the side.
"oh, I think they have." Answered the other.
"You simply must come and see our lovely church."
"Must." they insisted together.
Kittys hand squeezed the Doctors arm as for a second the old womens eyes misted over, causing them to look as dull and cloudy as the sky above them.
"I think they'd love to join our little parish." Said the one in the shawl.
"They'd fit right in." chimed the other.
"Wouldn't they?" chirrped the one the shawl
"they would." they hissed together.
"Sorry, I'm not really much of a church goer..." The Doctor said, testing their reaction.
"Oh we wouldn't worry about that." Said the one in the apron
"We'll have you converted in No time. Won't we?" smiled the other.
"Oh no time at all."
"No time at all" they hissed together as their eyes once again momentarily clouded over.
Their mouths stretched open into almost too wide yawns and briefly inside something moved, bubbled in the darkness at the very back of their mouths, glinting slightly before their mouths snapped shut & they took a step forward again.
"Oh Agnes, Mavis!" A voice came from behind them.
The two ladies eyes widened and their smiles faltered as Peggy stepped between The Doctor and Kitty.
"How are you?" Peggy asked politely. "Don't see you out of church much these days."
"That's because we are Dedicated to our cause Miss Light." snapped the one in the shawl.
"Yes, Dedicated." snapped the other.
"Not like you." growled the one in the shawl.
"No, not like you."
"DIRTY SINNER." they hissed
"You'll join us soon." The one with the bun said darkly.
"Yes. You'll all join us soon." croaked the other.
"You and that delightful daughter of yours." they both growled.
"You leave Maggie out of this-You hear me. You leave her alone." Peggy barked advancing on them.
"Don't be afraid sinner. We'll cleanse you all with our waters." The two old ladies smiled back up at her.
"Well you won't be cleansing us anytime soon!" Nora appeared with a bucket of water and threw it over the two ladies.
Their screeches echoed in the air as they shuffled backwards and turned back towards the church. Surprisingly launching into sprints worthy of an athlete back to its doors.
"Well, THAT was creepy." The Doctor heard Kitty sigh.
"That" scolded Nora "is why you two should be leaving."
"That" replied the Doctor "is exactly why we're staying."
Nora scowled at the Doctor for a moment before her eyes darted behind him and she pushed past him roughly "Peggy! where are you going! I forbid you to go anywhere! get off that Bike this instant!"
The Doctor and Kitty turned to see Peggy hopping on the seat of a worn rusted bike that was propped up against a garden wall.
"I need to see Maggie. I need to make sure she's okay" she hesitated "and I'm bringing her back with me."
"You most certainly are NOT!" Cried Nora throwing her hands in the air "You will not kidnap that child-do you hear me Margaret Roberta Light!?"
"I'm not kidnapping her-I'm her MOTHER!" Peggy shouted back as she peddled off up a dusty path leading through some trees.
"That girl will be the death of me." Nora sighed tight lipped.
"I'll go with her." Kitty suddenly volunteered. Running out a few paces before the Doctor grabbed her arm.
"Are you sure?" he asked her raising a eyebrow. "we have no idea what is actually going on here."
Kitty removed the Doctors hand from her arm. "sure. We have a small idea- thanks to Agnes and Mavis-and you can find out more here....I'll bring Peggy back." She gave him a small smile before she dashed off.
