"Are you okay?" Peggy asked Kitty as she handed her a cup of tea.
Her head throbbed and her vision occasionally went unfocused. She rubbed the side of her head gently. "I'll be okay, Thanks"
She was aware The Doctor, who was staring out the tiny upstairs Kitchen window, kept turning to glance at her. She felt a little self conscious when he did and so she strightened up and pretended to sip the too-hot tea as if she had recovered. He had been very quiet, hands in his pockets, just staring up at that church. She wondered wether he was, in fact, conversing with them right now-or wether he was forming a plan of some kind..or even if he was at a complete loss-which she hoped he wasn't. She kept thinking about Peggys daughter-the little girl they had taken. Thier words-she had somehow heard, in a rasping horrid hiss still echoed in her thoughts "They will find you. They are looking. Tearing apart time and space to weed you out." It sent an involuntary shiver down her spine. Were these words meant for her? Was this 'they' the beings that stole her family all those years ago?....
Her attention was caught by The Doctor asking Nora about the buckets of water that had saved them on more than one occasion now. Nora explained that it was water she had saved for washing from before the Storm but they ahd just used the last. Tense silence fell again and Kitty found the words whispering in her mind again "They will find you. They are looking. Tearing apart time and space to weed you out."
The Doctor was thinking, thinking hard. Adding up all the facts he had already acquired and trying to piece them together. He was also concentrating-sending out his own psychic energy toward the church-trying to feel something, anything that would help him. He could sense a sort of resistance around the Church- like Father McClellan was pushing him back, blocking him. He wasn't beaten yet but he did need more answers.
"I think it's about time you were honest with us." Nora broke the quiet tension in the Small kitchen as she sat down opposite Kitty. "Both of you. What is happening to our village AND more importantly, what are you going to do about it-assuming you can do anything at all!"
The Doctor and Kitty exchanged a look. The Doctor scratched the back of his neck uncomfortably.
"Well?" she insisted but still words failed them both. The uncertainty was, Nora's character seemed so unlikely to be able accept any of the reality of this situation and therefore unable to accept and trust an alien time traveller and his futuristic companion. "Oh for Gods sake." She slammed a little worn notebook onto the Kitchen table. "There-take a look."
Curious Kitty pulled the little worn green notebook towards her and opened it. It was full of short little diary entries but they were dated 1918. "But, this is the first world war..?" she said out loud.
"The last page girl!" Nora flicked through the pages until she came to the very last page.
At the top of it was written 'A strange dream' A little drawing of the TARDIS sat in the corner of the page, the black ink smudged. Kitty read a portion of it out loud, quite disbelieving it as she read;
"I dreamt an old school teacher of mine, at Farringham, was not as he seemed. He travelled around in a strange blue box that could come and go as it pleased. I dreamt that the church back home was in peril, the congregation had some sort of sickness that turned their eyes white but my old teacher, visited in his box and called himself 'The Doctor'-" Kitty stopped as the notebook was sharply pulled away from her. Nora Stood holding the notebook to her chest, she turned to the Doctor, who with his eyebrows raised simply said "oh, right then."
"I don't know what you are" Nora said quietly "but I know you are meant to be here."
The Doctor smiled and looked at Kitty "See, Always end up where you're meant to! Come on!" he rushed towards the narrow staircase leading down into the quaint shop. He paused to grin at Nora and said "I knew I liked you really."
