"Wait up!" Kitty breathed as she drew up near the side of the wobbly old bike. Peggy had managed to get quite far ahead of her by the time she had, however briefly, reassured the Doctor. The were on a worn dusty path. Low moss covered incomplete stone walls sat sloping on either side of them and long bare branches of trees stretched above them grasping at the graphite sky they partially obscured. miles of well kept farmed fields lay beyond the thick patches of trees. Kitty noted how eerily silent it was. No wind, No chirping of birds or rustling of wild animals in the undergrowth. It felt cold and the greenery was nearly non existent for May. Kitty almost felt like she had stepped into a black and white movie.
Peggy stopped short on the bike and distracted by her surrounded Kitty almost walked into her.
"You're not going to persuade me to go straight back." Peggy said looking down at the petite brown haired girl.
"I wasn't going too." she replied honestly.
"Oh...." Peggy began peddling again, a little more at ease. "Good."
"It's....a bit dull for May isn't it?" Asked the girl as se half jogged beside her. Peggy simply nodded. She had no answer for the unusual cloudy skies and lack of spring flowers and buds. Now that she thought about it, it made everything just that little bit more scary. And she found herself saying "The war seemed cold and dull, No one really knew when it would end-if it would end at all, But at least we still had Time. We had the seasons, we had springs and summers. Since the day the Victory was announced and they slowly began showing up-those things, nothing has changed. The days are cold and the sky is grey. All the birds disappeared, the flowers died...."
"Hmmm." The girl paused momentarily looking thoughtful.
"What was your name?" Peggy asked lightly- trying to lighten the subject as the greyness around them seemed to suddenly impress itself harder on everything around them-as if it could feel it was being noticed.
"It's Kitty." She gave a brief smile. Peggy couldn't help but notice this oddly dressed girl with the interesting white toed laced shoes that she rather quite liked felt different to anyone she had ever met, not quite like the Man who she was with who emanated some sort of calm power not to be trifled with but something a little less-like she was but she wasn't. Thinking about it made her head spin.
Somewhere around them a few twigs snapped, breaking the silence. A rush of hurried footsteps raced towards them through the dry undergrowth as the two women braced themselves.
The cup of tea was plonked down in front of the Doctor with a dull clunk. He watched the comforting steam rising from the pale golden liquid for a moment before raising his eyes to meet Noras who sat opposite him looking at him tightlipped and expectantly.
"Thank you." He gave his best grin "Can't beat a great british cup of tea. Nothing like it in the world-in the universe actually-never really found anything quite like it" He picked up the tiny china cup and took a sip recoiling instantly and almost dropping the cup in his haste to put it down "HOT HOT HOT!!" he exclaimed waving a hand about in front of his burning lips.
"What did you expect-I just boiled the water." Nora stated, leaning back and folding her arms across her chest.
The Doctor shrugged in reply licking his lips-wait, was that.....sodium? salt? Just the smallest, weeniest hint but it was there-his sensitive extra thousand or so taste buds could not be fooled.
"How's the water?" he asked rising and striding over to the sink whipping out his glasses and leaning over the single tap.
"What has that got to do with anything -you strange little man!?"
