The next day at breakfast, a bunch of boys had gathered around my normal seating area to discuss quidditch trials. Dan was the captain of the Gryffindor team this year and he had been posting the signup for the trials on top of the common room's bulletin board all week. He had even tried recruiting me to join the team but I had declined because I didn't think I'd have time for it. Dan was annoyed by my lame excuse and wouldn't stop bothering me until I promised that would be a substitute player if anyone got sick.
This meant that I was required to attend all quidditch practices before a game to make sure I stayed in shape and knew all of the plays. Charlus and Matthew were surprised by this, they hadn't even thought I knew how to play quidditch.
After everyone ate breakfast, we made our way down to the quidditch pitch. I took a seat up in the stands next to Dorea and a grumpy Fran. She was just upset that we dragged her along to this and stopped her from studying. She was such a Ravenclaw.
Dan whistled loudly, gathering everyone's attention. The crowd of quidditch players fell silent and so did everyone in the stand. He gave them a speech about what he was looking for in a team this year, which I only caught a few parts of because I wasn't really listening.
"My sister will be a sub for us whenever someone gets sick, she's up there right now," Dan said while pointing up at me: the group on the field turned and looked in my direction. I stood up and waved before taking my seat and turning to my friends.
They were talking about how hopefully this year we would win the quidditch cup and put Slytherin in their place. Supposedly Slytherin had consistently won the quidditch cup for the past several years.
Just as I was about to ask what position Charlus and Matthew played, the trials started and I figured out that Matthew was a chaser while Charlus was a beater. Since Dan was the captain, he did not need to prove his abilities of being a chaser. He was looking to fill two chaser positions, one keeper, two beaters, and one seeker.
I noticed McLaggen looking my way from the field and he gave me a wink before taking off in the air and placing himself in front of the three goals. Charlus and seven other boys were taking the place as chasers: I noticed Matthew and three other boys took the place of beaters. There wasn't another keeper trying out so Dan flew over to me and asked me to fill it just for the trials.
Instead of saying no, like I wish I could have, I trudged down to the locker rooms and changed into my quidditch gear. I used my wand to summon my broom and flew out onto the field. Once I was stationed in front of the goal posts, Dan whistled for the game to begin.
Charlus was the first to get his hands on the quaffle and zoomed towards McLaggen. Somehow, McLaggen managed to block Charlus' strong throw to the left hoop and threw it back towards a player I didn't know. The boy began making his way towards me and threw a pass towards another chaser. They tried to team up on me but before they could complete their plan, Charlus intercepted their pass and threw it up above to a chaser on his team.
The game continued on for a bit and I hadn't let a single quaffle pass through the goal posts. Dan was writing down notes about each player and when he seemed to know who would be on the team, he blew the whistle signaling the end of trials.
"Alright, listen up, you lot! I have the team put together and there are a few changes from last year considering the fact that we lost so many good players," Dan said, admiration written all over his face as he thought back to what must have been last year's quidditch team.
