Alex's POV

My yell pierced the silence in the van.

"Wha-HOLY SHIT!" Tobin yelled.

People on the side of the road were half starved, and they looked like zombies, although I know there is no such things as zombies.

A person slammed into the side of the van.

Jesus do people in New York have a death wish?

"Hold onto something!" The driver yelled.

I gripped the bottom of my seat, wishing this van had a seatbelt.

The driver made a sharp right turn, and I slammed my head into the window, and groaned.

Then there was another right turn, and my head slammed the window again.

"Fuck" I mumbled, ignoring the bursting pain in my head.

The van skidded to a stop just in front of a brick building.

Something hit the roof.

I frown, and try to shake the ringing in my ears.

Another thunk on the roof.

Marc loads his gun.

"What the hell?" The driver asked, as another thunk came from the roof.

"I want to check it out" Marc started, but that's a death wish.

"No!" The driver yelled. "Are you crazy man? Thats suicide!"

Then, something fell onto the hood of the car. I stare at it.

Is that a...weave?

Then, half a face appears upside down on the top of the windshield.

I scream.

The driver begins to drive, and Eli is staring on in horror.

"Get her off!" Marc yelled, and the person on the roof is still hanging on and staring at us.

The driver gains speed, but nothing happened. She was still stuck there.

"I said get her off!" Marc yells.

"What the heck do you think I'm doing?" He asks. Then slams on the breaks. I smash my head on the seat in front of me.

The person flies off the roof, lands in a mangled heap, then starts to get up.

"Hell no!" The driver yells, then presses the gas, and hits the person.

I cover my eyes, but watch through the cracks of my fingers.

The person doesn't get up anymore.

"Okay, I'm going to drive as far as I can towards the empire state building-or whatever is left of it-and then you're going from there. Its clearly too dangerous to be going a long way on foot" The driver decided, and no one protests.

When he drops us off, whats left of the empire state building is pretty close.

"I'd say we have a mile walk" Eli says, rubbing his shoulder.

"Then we better get to it" Marc says, and we nod.

We walked for a little while, and I shiver.

"Is it fall?" I ask.

"Yep" Marc said.

"What happens when winter comes?" Eli asks.

"Then we keep looking, if we haven't got them yet. It will be a lot harder, but we keep looking" Marc said.
