I closed the door with a light slam and walked into the kitchen to see mum draining the spaghetti and stirring the pasta sauce and mince. She hadn't yet noticed my presence so I walked up the stairs and threw my bag, neatly, on my bed. I changed into sweats and a white v-neck shirt, grabbing my clothes and putting them in the wash. When I went down to the laundry, it was then that mum took notice I was home and finished serving my dinner. There was only one bowl out, which showed me she was going back to work again. I didn't like that she worked so much. I knew she was pushing herself too much. I was waiting for her to collapse it was that bad.

"Hey hun, how was your day?" She put foil over the food and began cleaning dishes.

"It was the same as any other day, except the stupid principal decided to make it comp-"

"Oh! I got a call from her today!" I frowned.

"What did she..wait..anyway..so she decided to make it compul-"

"She said you've got an outstanding attendance level and grades that it may be a new record!"

"Oh.." She smiled so big that her eyes shined out the happiness as she walked closer and placed each hand on my shoulders.

"I'm so proud of you baby boy". She pulled me into a hug. "You've made me so happy and I have so much pride in telling anyone who my son is. After that huge failure and disaster...I just can't believe I have you..So smart, dedicated, amazing, just so hard working, As my son".

Let's not mention the annoying compulsory attendance of sport games then.

I haven't seen her this happy in so many years. After him. She just wasn't the same. Ever since that event, I've always tried my hardest to make her proud, or happy. She thought for so many years that she was a failure of a mother. But it was no where near true. She's the best mother I could have ever wished for.

"I have to go into work again, I'll be back really late so I made you bolognese. I'm so proud of you" She kissed my forehead and grabbed her keys, walking out the door and I listened for her car leaving. Yep, I have to go to the sport games. As much as I don't want to, making my mum feel like she's doing something right is much more important. I wouldn't go if it wouldn't make my mum happy by the end of the year. But I feel it's my job to show her she's not a bad mother.

I went to the study, turning on the one and only computer we have and went to grab my homework from upstairs, starting on it while waiting for the computer to load. It takes at least twenty minutes to start up, then I have to log on and wait another fifteen. Might as well do homework, right?

So, homework doesn't last long...Still five bloody minutes or more even, like can this bomb hurry up. Well, not bomb...I'm grateful to have this, it's the best I'll get.

I did want to get a job, I wasn't just sitting around not wanting to help. My mum refused. She literally called all places I applied to, to tell them I'm far too busy with school and I wasn't in need of a job. You'd think that's harsh of her, and the more experience the better, but it was heartwarming to see her care so much about my education.

Eventually the computer completed its course and I logged on to the school website, looking at the sport timetables.
