During the past few weeks, I had been exploring the little city of Dawson a lot, including the school I now had to go to five days a week. It was a tall building in the colour of beige with grey coloumns that rose up the walls, reaching the terrace with high windows in between.
When I reached the school, the yard was still laid in darkness. There were groups of students all over the place, their loud conversations filling the air as well as the sounds of car tires creaking through the high snow.
I tried to remain unnoticed as I walked towards the front door, trying to avoid any eye contact without drawing any attention to myself. I just wanted this day to be over. I felt everyone's eyes on me and I immediately knew that I wasn't going to stay unnoticed for too long. This school didn't seem too big either, so things were probably spreading even faster than I was used to.
I shoved my hands deeper in my pockets and tried to focuse on my shoes, in order to keep my mind off things that I didn't want to remember.
I entered the hallway and almost bumped into some student that came around the corner, but she just walked on after quietly snorting at me. She was a tall and brunette girl, I could already tell that she was pretty popular here.
I wanted to walk on as well, but I stopped dead in my tracks as I realised that I had no clue where to go. The registry, that's for sure. But how am I supposed to know where it is?
"Could you tell me where the registry is, by any chance?" I asked calmly.
The guy turned around. He seemed pretty shocked and looked down at me as if he wanted to check if I was the one who just talked to him.
"Sorry, um... w-what did you just say?" he asked, his voice shaking with every word that escaped his lips.
"If you could tell me where the registry is. I'm a newbie" I said again.
I noticed his blue eyes widening and he seemed shocked for a moment. I furrowed my eyebrows at him before he stuttered, "O-okay, I'll show you."
He looked to the ground while he made his way through the crowd. He was really tall and I wondered if he could fit through the doors without hitting his head. I could easily drown in the mass of people, but there was no way that someone could overlook him.
I followed him up the stairs and mentally said a prayer when I finally had the ability to walk beside him, now that the amount of people decreased.
I took a deep breath to get my mind off of things again. The voices inside my head were screaming and yelling at me, telling me how I wasn't good enough and they wouldn't stop. I wished I could just turn back and run off, but my anxiety didn't seem to let me.
"So, what's your name?" I asked, trying to break the silence.
He hesitated for a moment and looked at me before answering.
"Lucas" he said "What's your name?"
"Ally" I replied, trying to catch up on him.
God, this guy had longer legs than a giraffe.
No sooner, we reached a hallway with a lot of picture collages hanging on the lightly yellow painted walls. There were some plants standing by the huge windows that let beams of sunlight fill the room.
"This room" Lucas spoke up again, pointing to a door in a dark green colour.
"Thank you very much, without you I would have been lost" I said, a smile plastered on my face for probably the first time of the day.
Lucas cracked a smile and shyly waved before turning on his heel to head for his next class which I would reach too late for obvious.
I shrugged it off and knocked on the mahagoni door, entering after being called in.
"Hello, what can I do for you?" a woman with short, blonde dyed hair asked me.
"My name's Ally Scott, I'm new here. I wanted to get my schedule and my books" I said as I walked over to her table.
"Oh, let's see" she smirked and started to flip through the pages of a dark blue folder.
She got out some sheet of paper and glanced at it for a second before handing it to me.
"There you go; this is your schedule, your locker number and the rooms of your periods. And those" she said, shoving some books over to me, "those are your books."
"Thanks" I responded and quickly put them into my backpack before I walked out again whilst reading my schedule.
By the time I left the registry, I had already missed more than ten minutes of my period. I was starting to get nervous and I felt my palms turning sweaty as I realised that I had no idea where my first period was.
I walked back down the stairs, at least remembering the way to the hall where all the lockers were located. There were no more students filling the hallway, everyone was in their classes except for me.
I was still searching for my locker, my eyes bound to the sheet of paper in my hands. Number 175.
"165, 167, 169..." I read the numbers on the single lockers I was passing by to myself.
"175" I whispered out loud and stopped dead in my tracks.
A smile drew to my face as I opened the red metal door. I was impressed; I managed not failing at least one thing today.
Just as I got my backpack off of my shoulders to get my books back out, the door of my locker was thrown shut right in front of my face.
"What the hell?" I cursed as a brown haired guy was standing in front of me, leaning against the locker to my right.
"Hey there" he said, stuck with a smile plastered on his face.
His dimples were poking out of his cheeks. He had pretty green eyes, reflecting the light of the lamps above and curly brown hair.
He wore a black pair of jeans and a simple white shirt with silhouettes of several tattoos shining through the thin fabric. And somehow, his fancy odor managed to distract me.
"Well hey" I said more like a question.
"What's your name?" he asked, not caring that I actually wanted to get my books into my locker now.
"Look, I need to get to my class. So if you could please move and just leave me alone, thanks" I said.
"Well, let me know your name first" he demanded again.
I sighed. What did he want? Why couldn't he just leave me alone so I wouldn't be even later for class?
"That's none of your business" I spat and pushed him away, in order to open my locker again.
I wasn't strong at all; actually pretty weak, but it was not like I was going to hit him. I just threatened him, hoping he would go for it.
Well, he didn't.
"I've never seen you around" he stated and watched me throwing some random books into my locker.
I ignored him, thinking it would be the best. He couldn't follow me into class, could he?
"Wait, where are you going?" he yelled as I just walked away.
I was on my way to that staircase that led upstairs. I wasn't much of a genius, but room 204 should be in the second floor.
"Where are you going?" that guy caught up and just walked beside me.
"Oh you know, feeding my dolphins" I said, "no, you idiot! To my fucking class! I'm already late, so if you could just let me go now, that would be really nice"
Instead of the reaction I expected, he just cracked a smile. This guy better pay attention that I don't punch it out of his face.
But he didn't follow me as I sprinted down the hallway, he just stood there as I hurried to find my classroom.
I could have asked him, but I didn't want his attention to be honest. I shouldn't judge by the first impression, but this creep seemed pretty awkward.
