Kayla has soccer practice everyday, so I find myself at the base of the tree again. I don't talk to it this time, just let the wind and the birds and the scattered leaves and the little pile of discarded dirt do the speaking for me.
I close my eyes, listening to the sound of a seagull somewhere, and the sound of the ghosts yelling.
"Bet you can't climb as high as me, Tyler!"
The tips of my toes have fallen asleep, tucked under my legs, the weight of my heart weighing heavily on them. My hands shake slightly, but only from the cold.
"Bet I can!"
I can hear someone laughing in the distance, but it might just be the distant echo of Tyler and Jason and Kayla and me.
"Be careful!"
A bird sings, receiving a call back from another bird, the first trills of the mating season slipping through the leaves. Or maybe it's just a bird looking for a friend, calling out into the world, looking for someone to show him that he's not alone.
"We'll be fine, Kayla!"
The sharp snap of branches breaking under footsteps bring me to open my eyes, searching for who ever had managed to sneak away.
"We're smart, don't worry so much about us!"
"I'll always be worrying about you two!"
"Troye? Is that you?"
