Kayla and I walk home from Starbucks together two hours of conversation later. The warmth we seemed to have stolen from Starbucks has faded into the air, and I shiver as we stand outside of her door, waiting for someone to open the door and let us in.

After a few minutes of shivering, Mum opens the door with a snap and anger in her eyes.

"Pack your bags, Troye. We're leaving."

"What?" Kayla says before I can speak. "Why?"

Mum swallows, stepping aside to let us in. "You'll probably find out soon enough at school, Kayla. It's nothing that you or Lila did. It was just a bad idea for us to come here. Troye, the plane leaves in two hours, start packing."

I stare at her, open mouthed, confused -

"Where's Tyde?"

"He's in the guest room, and you don't need to go talk to him right now. Go. Pack."

I don't say anything else, just follow Kayla up the stairs silently. We pass the guest room as we go, and I can hear Tyde crying.

Instead of going inside, I focus on pretending that I can't hear him.
