(Whytnie’s POV)
There I was. Sinking into a deeper hole than I’d already been in. My body hurt, but I couldn’t really point out a specific place where the pain was coming from. I needed to move. To be free. I needed something. I couldn’t exactly decide what.
Harry started moving in his sleep, and I waited a few seconds before he opened his sleepy eyes. The couch was very uncomfortable; he’d given me a perfect explanation of it yesterday before he finally passed out. Honestly, I was surprised they even let him sleep here. He wasn’t my immediate family or my husband. Huh, weird.
“Good morning,” he said in his deep sleepy voice as he looked up at me. I smiled over at him. He needed some kind of sign to show that I was okay. Even if it was a lie.
“How’d you sleep?” I asked, already knowing the answer.
“Just lovely,” he answered, getting up to look over at me. “How’re you feeling? Do you need something?” He got off the couch and walked over to me, placing the back of his left hand on my forehead. If only it were just a regular cold. Of course, I couldn’t be quite sure. I mean, this could turn out to be nothing more than a big misunderstanding. There was doubt in my mind, but I could still hope. I could still hope. Right? Or was I just a lost cause? I feel like the doctors believe so. Maybe even my parents. Well, there’s got to be a reason why they want me home and won’t allow me to finish school.
“Well, I…” Before I could finish, Caleb and Emily walked into the room. The doctors had already been in here earlier, checking me over a couple of times. They didn’t speak to me, unless to ask how I was feeling. They gave me something to stop the pain, but it was still working its way through my system apparently because I felt no relief.
“How’re you feeling?” Caleb cautiously asked as him and Emily approached the bed. Harry laced our fingers as Caleb got closer. Emily smiled, but it looked like she was forcing it. Her eyes looked red, but Caleb’s looked worse. But Harry beat them both.
“I’m kind of hungry,” I admitted just as my stomach growled. Caleb tried to smile but he failed completely. I looked up at Harry and put my other hand on the top of his. “Harry, would you mind getting me some breakfast? Please?” He sighed and leaned down to kiss me on the forehead.
“I’ll be right back,” he whispered. He kept glancing back at me before the door finally closed behind him. I let out a deep breath as my eyes started to water. My eyes closed and I fell back on the bed, covering my eyes with my right arm. I tried to ignore the pain. I tried to ignore the world. I tried to ignore the wires hooked up to me. I tried to ignore the fact that I was stuck in a hospital. I tried to ignore the urge to throw up. I tried to ignore the fact that I’m bringing everybody down.
But I couldn’t.
I felt like screaming.
Sobs started coming from nowhere and everywhere as they aggressively shook my body, making me feel weak and useless. I stayed like that for a few minutes until the door opened. I wiped my eyes and looked up at the group walking in.
It wasn’t Harry back with my breakfast, which didn’t even sound appealing to me now. I didn’t even seem to care about what it was that he brought me. I hated hospital food.
“Good morning, Whytnie,” the doctor said with a small smile. My parents followed him into my bedroom and shut the door behind them. My doctor was holding a clipboard with a bunch of papers with writing I was too far away to read. “How’re you feeling?”
“Okay?” I answered like a question. Could he tell I was lying? Could my parents?
“Are you feeling dizzy?” Maybe. I nodded, too scared to say yes. “Are you hungry?” I shook my head. “Now, to my knowledge, you have been feeling some pain recently, is this correct?”
“Yes, but I assumed it was because of my panic attacks,” I argued. He then looked down and started writing something on one of the papers.
He then continued to check me over again. Once he was finished, he cleared his throat, reading through a few of the papers attached to his clipboard. “The results have come in.” He met my eyes, as my parents reached out for my hands and gripped them tight. I haven’t been able to stop crying since I got here. “Whytnie, our tests show that you have shown symptoms of leukemia.”
My mouth went dry, and my throat tightened. What could he possibly mean? That didn’t seem right. Me? Have leukemia? Like Mandy Moore in A Walk to Remember? This kind of thing only happens in movies or to people I don’t know. Why me? My life was just starting to fall into place. Why did this have to happen?
“Now, nothing is certain, of course. We may have caught it early on and can be cured.” The door burst open and in walked Harry, Emily, Caleb and some other girl I barely recognized. Everyone started yelling and talking at once, people were crying, and it all stopped when someone started screaming.
Well, me, that is. I started screaming.
All eyes turned back to me.
“Nothing is certain,” I reply, faking strength and courage. I meant to convince them, but I was still trying to convince myself.
