(Whytnie’s POV)

The results are in. The results are in. No matter how many times I say it, I still won’t be ready for what the answers mean. I could either end up with leukemia, which would kill me a lot faster than I was ready for. It was also very painful and I’d end up losing my hair if I went into chemo therapy. Like that was the worst thing that could possibly happen, right? On the other hand, I don’t have leukemia and I’ve just got your every day average cold. I know it’s a lot to ask for, but a girl can only hope. So I can either die in the next year, or I can live a long life and die of old age.

Well, I couldn’t really look at the big picture. Too scary. Let alone how my future changed after what happened two days ago. I can’t believe he even went and asked my parent’s permission for my hand in marriage! Like how old fashioned was that? Did I secretly like it? Yes. Was I scared? Beyond yes.

Sighing, I reach for my phone and dial the phone number I’ve been meaning to call since I finished the testing. Harry was still asleep and I didn’t want to disturb him, so I tiptoed out of the room and outside. After I hit call, I only had to wait for about a few seconds before he picked up. I almost cried right then.

“Yo,” I say with as much strength as I could gather. He saw right through me. Or heard?

“How’re you feeling?” Of course he would ask that. What was he Harry now? Speaking of, when would be a good time to tell him? Now or never?

“Just lovely, I think I might run a marathon later.” I roll my eyes and think never was the correct answer. “How’s school?”

“Just wonderful, I think I’m going to run for student government!”

“I don’t need your sarcasm,” I joke back. “What about everybody?” Meaning Emily. I haven’t spoken to her since the night I got back to Washington. The boys were supposed to be working on some recording without Harry. I knew he was depressed about that, but I didn’t make him stop his life and come over with me. In fact, I want him to do the exact opposite. Even now. Especially after last night. He doesn’t need to be around to watch me die. Or live? Depending on what the results said, right? I’m in too much pain to not have some sort of illness.

Before I can even consider telling Caleb, he’s ranting. “Zuri has bought a brand new personality, and I think Zander might actually be crushing on this brand new Zuri.” He stifles a laugh, and I hear grunting coming from Zander. “Just kidding, not really.” This time Caleb does laugh. I hear Zander hit Caleb, but he only laughs even harder. “Okay, okay, Zuri is still that creepy fangirl.” Zander slams the door in the background, and Caleb’s still laughing. “It’s funny, really.”

“I can’t believe that.” And now it’s me trying to stop laughing.

“Yeah, it’s funny really. Like Zuri is so calm now, I just don’t believe it’s the same girl.” His voice gets quieter and more serious. “I think she’s undergone an alien abduction.” We both start laughing so hard my side ends up hurting.  Somebody clears their throat behind me and I jump. Harry’s eyes widen as his arms are crossed and he’s leaning against the doorframe.

I mouth the word “Caleb” at him and he just nods his head. He gives me a long look and points down at the ring on my finger before going back inside. Rolling my eyes, I turn back around and listen in as Caleb is talking about some girl from his class.

“…. And I told her I had a girlfriend, but she still doesn’t get the message, you know? And you know my girlfriend? She’s like crazy jealous, even if there isn’t a reason. I just don’t understand, you know? I don’t think I can put up with it any longer. Don’t get me wrong,” his babble just started dragging on, “she’s an amazing girl, most of the time, but when it comes to you she just can’t get over it. She just doesn’t understand, you know? I mean, it’s not like we’re anything romantic or something like that. I don’t know what to do about it, you know? I don’t know how many times I have to explain our relationship…”

“Caleb!” He stops to take a much needed breath and I resist an eye roll. “I’m happy for you, if you found somebody then be with her. I don’t want you to have to worry about me, I’ll be fine, I promise.”

            “What?”

“If you really do like this girl, then don’t let me come in between you two.”

“What? Whytnie, that’s not what I meant!”

“Caleb, just don’t let me ruin things because I’m not worth it.”

            “That’s a lie.”

            “Don’t argue with me.”

            “Well, you’re wrong.”

“I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I ruin your relationship.”

“Then I don’t need to be with her if she doesn’t understand.”

            “Most girls don’t, Caleb.”

“Well, then I’ll find somebody that will.”

            “How likely is that?”

“Whytnie?” Harry’s voice made me jump and I turned towards him. His eyes widened and he wrapped me up in his arms. I didn’t even realize I was crying. “What’s wrong? Did you tell him?”

“Is that Harry?” Oh, great. “Tell me what?”

“I’m sorry.” I didn’t know who I was telling it to, but it was to one of them. Or both.

“Are you hanging up on me now?”

“No,” I said as Harry muttered, “Yes.”

“Give me a minute, please?” I asked Harry. He didn’t seem all too thrilled but he kissed my cheek before going back inside. “I have to tell you something, Caleb.” He waited patiently for what I was about to say. “Harry proposed.”

            “What?”

            “And I said yes.”

            “Double what?”

“What do you think? Is it as bad as my mind is making it out to be?” He was silent for a long moment before sighing.

“If I were in his shoes, I would want you to say yes.”

“So I’m doing the right thing?” My eyes sting and I finally notice that I’m crying harder than I was used to even if I wasn’t making a sound. “Even if it doesn’t feel right?”

“Do you love him?” His voice was uneven.

            “Yes.”

            “Then that settles it.”

            “But−”

“Are you trying to get me to talk you out of it, Whytnie?”

“Well… No. I just wanted your opinion.”

“Well, if you love him then marry him.” His voice changed into something more hopeful-ish. “If you don’t, then don’t marry him. Problem solved.”

            “It isn’t that easy.”

“It is if you want it to be. Getting married shouldn’t be something hard. You either want to or you don’t.”

“I think I want to.” He grunted and sighed.

“Listen, I have to go now. I’ll see you in a couple of weeks, Whytnie. Call me whenever you feel like it.” Then the line went dead.
