(Whytnie’s POV)

“How are you feeling?” I nod my head as if to say “Yeah, I’m alright, a little annoyed, but I’ll be just fine”. My voice doesn’t work, my throat feels extremely dry and it hurts to even breathe. Why am I not getting any water to drink? Can’t they tell that my voice isn’t working because I need WATER not more medicine! I thought I was told these were doctors? Not everything can be cured with more medicine! Just give me some water and I’ll be good to go. “Do you know where you’re at?” What kind of stupid question is this!? Of course I know where I’m at! I’m in a hospital, duh! I nod showing off my impatience with these idiotic questions. “Can you tell me where?” Can I? No. But do I know? Yes. I try to croak out an answer that should have been, “Just give me some water already, crazy lady,” but really came out sounding inhuman-like.

There were loud noises coming from behind my closed door, a curtain covering over the small window so I can’t see outside of it. Voices flood through but they were just mumbles not actual words. My doctor kept looking me over, checking everything twice. She smiles down at me like my whole world isn’t crumbling at my feet. I don’t even try to attempt a smile. I didn’t see the point.

Her voice is smooth like velvet, like she’s had lots of practice in this situation. “You’re back in Washington.” My face falls and I know she can read the horror in my eyes. I really didn’t know where I was exactly. I was back in America. I was wondering why this chick didn’t speak in French or have an accent. Maybe I just figured they’d give me because she’s like a foreign exchange doctor here and they gave her to me because we’re from the same area. Or maybe I just didn’t want to face the truth. I didn’t want to have to deal with the future. I didn’t want to know. Maybe I was just protecting myself. After all, here I was. Alone. In a room with some doctor I didn’t recognize. Where was my doctor? Where was Harry? Where were my parents? Why was I alone?

And I hate the sinking feeling that flooded through me, crashing over me in giant waves making me lose my breath.

“We’ve brought you back here to treat you.”

How are they supposed to do that? I thought they didn’t know what I had. I thought they said that treatment would end up killing me?

“Your doctor is in the delivery room, but he won’t be long. I just need to ask you a few more questions. I’ll try to keep them to a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ kind of answers.” I nod, feeling the numbness take over my entire body. “Do you remember what happened?” Another nod without my control whatsoever. It’s like I’m a robot, it feels mechanical or like I’m being forced. “Do you remember what happened before you blacked out?” I shake my head this time. The last thing I remember was screaming, and then Harry flipping out. My chest starts to tighten all over again, and that’s the last thing I remember. But I don’t tell her what I remember. I don’t tell her anything. Not just because I can’t. My memory is starting to hurt.

Or maybe that is what happened up until the time I passed out. But I don’t tell her how much I’m confused. I just keep it to myself, like my little secret.

“Do you feel pain?” Besides mentally? No. I shake my head. “Are you hungry?” Just give me some water already! I shake my head, even though I am hungry. “Are you thirsty?” I nod my head up and down violently. She seems taken back by my motion but quickly leaves to retrieve some water for me. She’s smart, I’ll give her that. As she leaves, she only opens the door wide enough for her to slip out and not enough for me to see who was yelling on the other side of the door. Do I even want to know?

This doctor does the exact same when she walks back in, a glass of lukewarm water that she hands to me. I gulp it down in a matter of seconds, feeling the sting of my throat. She’s beside the bed, looking down at me. “Can you talk now?”

I croak something out that’s supposed to be ‘no,’ but she gets the message anyway.

“How about I get you some more?” She’s gone again. The same door trick. Over again. She’s back. I still don’t have the slightest clue about what’s going on outside of my room. The yelling sounds desperate as it grows louder. I can’t make out the words. I can’t tell who’s voice it belongs to. None of this makes sense. Who would be yelling?

I drink down the next cup in a matter of seconds as well. “Thanks.” At least it sounds like English now.

            “How do you feel?”

            “Numb.”

“It’s the medicine. It means it’s working.” She gives me another reassuring smile. “Do you feel any pain?” I shake my head. “Good. That’s good. Can you tell me the last thing you remember?”

            “Harry.”

“Harry?” Her expression changes to confusion as she watches me closely. “What about Harry do you remember?”

My head feels like someone took a sledgehammer to it. “Crying.”

“He was crying?” I nod. She gives me more water from the pitcher she brought in. I drink it all again. My throat starting to ease up. “Why was he crying?”

“I c-can’t…” My head starts throbbing and I have to shut my eyes as both my hands fly to hold my head. “My.” My breathing turns ragged. “H-Head.”

This doctor starts yelling and I hear the door bang open. More people. More voices. Frantic. Fear. Needles. Arms. My head still stings and my eyes don’t reopen. As my arms fall flat against the bed, I can no longer feel them. I try to wiggle my fingers, but I can’t. My whole body is frozen, like I’m frozen. I can no longer control my body. There’s more screaming. More reassuring voices. More conversation. Another scream. Sobbing. I don’t understand what’s going on. I don’t understand who’s talking, why they’re screaming. Something drops, shattering to the ground and echoing through my entire body.

And then another scream starts ricocheting through me.

Except this time, it’s my own.

And I’m drowned out by my own scream. Until I stop. The darkness washes over me and I feel myself falling.
