(Whytnie’s POV)
The music started playing, and I smile at nothing in particular. There was no more pain. There was no more fear. There was me. There was him. And there was my father. Standing beside me, complaining about the suit and tie he was wearing. He hated it the first time too. That didn’t matter. What mattered was now. Here I am, alive and still breathing. A miracle, the doctors told me when I woke up again. They couldn’t explain to anyone just exactly what it was, but somehow I died but then came back. Yes, confusing. I still didn’t fully understand what happened. I couldn’t remember much of that day either. It’s kind of a relief, though. My head hurts when I try to think about it.
Now here I am. I can’t keep looking in the past for answers that don’t need to be answered. All that matters is I’m here in the now. How I got here, well, it’s a blur and I won’t let it hold me back. So here I am.
My dress doesn’t fit the same as it did before; I’ve gained some of my weight back. My past with him flashes through my mind, all the heartache, all the fights, and all the love. None of the pain reappears.
And I know I’m ready.
I’m ready to walk down the aisle again, for real this time. There was no worry about how long I had to live, there was no longer any trace of the disease in my body. Now I could go on with my life. Go back to school next fall. Get my degree and become a teacher. Live out the rest of my life with the one person who has never left my side through all of this, who still loves me no matter how I act, and is more than willing to spend the rest of his life with me.
My father takes my arm through his and we walk into the church’s sanctuary. Everybody is already standing. Most of them look like they’re crying, but it takes every ounce of self-control to not cry myself. I look over at my mother, who’s smiling through all those tears, and then I look up to where Harry is standing. Louis’ right next to him just like before. But I don’t look away from Harry, who’s smiling and crying just like everybody else.
Nobody thought I was going to make it through this okay. I didn’t even believe it. But here I am. And I feel like my life is barely starting right now.
The time has finally come. I can only go forward from here, and that’s exactly where I intend on going. There’s no looking back now.
Almost tripping, I take that one last step and Harry’s hand extends to make sure I don’t fall over. I tell him I’m fine and we relive our wedding, this time without fear of what the future had in store for us. There was only now. There was only me and him. And that’s how we began our happily ever after.
