(Caleb’s POV)

Brittney’s too confusing. She just doesn’t understand. I don’t make her choose between her brother and me, so why is she making me choose between Whytnie and her? I just don’t get it! Girls! I feel like I’m already fed up with them. I will never understand them. Not even a little. Not even enough to survive with them. They just don’t make sense. Whatsoever. Like at all.

Speaking of… My phone starts ringing with Whytnie’s ringtone. A little after my big fight with Brittney when I told her I was going to see Whytnie soon. Man, she just loved that idea.

Not answering right away, because I’m still afraid my voice won’t sound right, I let Whytnie say it first. “Yo.” Her voice cracks with just that one word.

Taking a deep breath to calm myself, I ask, “How’re you feeling?” I can almost see her in my mind and the fact that she’s basically rolling her eyes the entire time. My heart flutters and I quickly ignore the feeling. It was time to move on, dude, she was never going to like you the way you want her to.

Sarcasm, it’s her number one go-to I swear. “Just lovely, I think I might run a marathon later.” Cue in eye roll here. “How’s school?” Of course she would ask about that. She misses it, I know she does. How could she not? It must be absolutely crazy and must feel weird not being in school. If she were here, I’d wrap my arms around her and never let her know how much I loved that feeling.

Instead I reply, “Just wonderful, I think I’m going to run for student government.”

“I don’t need your sarcasm,” she jokes. She’s quiet for a moment before asking, “What about everybody?” Meaning Emily. She wasn’t really close to Zuri, was always annoyed by her, or Zander, who mostly kept to himself really, or Karrena, who is too crazy, or any of the other lads, which I haven’t heard or seen since I said goodbye to Whytnie at the airport. Oh, don’t cry now!

Instead, I keep the topic light. Ignoring the fact that Zander’s laying on his bed, ignoring the world like usual, even though I know his music isn’t on but his headphones are in. “Zuri has bought a brand new personality,” I glance at Zander, whose eyes are closed looking peaceful, “and I think Zander might actually be crushing on this brand new Zuri.” I try to hide my laugh as Zander’s eyes widen and he glares at me. So much for looking peaceful. He makes this weird grunting sound as I just smile at him. “Just kidding, not really.” This time I do laugh, making Zander get up and punch my arm “playfully”, not really, and I can’t help but laugh even harder. “Okay, okay,” I put my arms up in surrender, holding the phone in place with my shoulder, “Zuri is still that creepy fangirl.” Zander sends one last death glare before slamming the door behind him on his way out, and I still haven’t stopped laughing. “It’s funny, really,” I breathe out.

“I can’t believe that.” I’ve just barely noticed she was laughing the whole time with me. Man, I missed her laugh. Not that I’d ever say that aloud, but I can think it, right?

“Yeah, it’s funny really,” I repeat and sigh. “Like Zuri is so calm now, I just don’t believe it’s the same girl.” I glance around, even though I know nobody is around. My voice gets quiet and serious and I whisper, “I think she’s undergone an alien abduction.” We’re quiet for a couple seconds before we crack up laughing. We laugh so hard my stomach ends up hurting. Man, I’ve missed this. I’ve just missed her. Too much. Way too much.

We both stopped laughing and I decided it was time to spill my guts about Brittney. I mean, if I couldn’t tell my best friend who could I tell?  “So, you know my girlfriend Brittney, right?” Well, duh. “Well, we’ve been fighting a lot, well, probably the whole time we’ve been together really. I just don’t know what to do. I mean, what do you think I should do? Not only because of you but because of this other girl in my English class.”
