Ameenah
"Morning babies, y'all don't want anything to eat?" Mama Nita asked as she walked into the kitchen.
"We do but Ameenah has a little date" Toni-Ann smirked looking over at me.
"Date?" she asked raising her eyebrows as she walked past me and took out some pots and pans to cook breakfast.
"No, their friend Jesse wants to show me this breakfast spot so he's taking me before school. It is not a date" I made clear as I opened a text from Jesse saying he was outside.
"Jesse? Where my boyfriend been at?" She laughed going into the refrigerator.
"Grandma can you not?" Symone asked as she entered the kitchen.
"Wasn't that your ex boyfriend? I hope no drama starts over this boy" Mama Nita said looking at me and Symone.
"We discussed this, I'm over Jesse..we we're fourteen it wasn't serious"
"Well I'm about to leave, see y'all at school. Bye Mama Nita" I smiled kissing her on the cheek. I left the kitchen and made my way to the front door.
"You don't need a ride to school?" I heard Ahmeer say from behind me. I turned around and smiled at him.
"No I got a ride, thanks for asking" I said before opening the door and leaving. I saw Jesse parked up in the drive way in an all black Chevy Impala. I tapped on the glass signaling him to unlock the doors. After he unlocked them I got in there my book bag in the back seat.
"Good morning" I smiled looking at him.
"Good morning" he laughed pulling out of the driveway and to his next destination. I decided to turn on the radio and smiled when I heard the song that was playing. I rapped along to J. Coles Forbidden Fruit.
'Aye yo, I walked through the valley of the shadow of death
When niggas hold tec's like they mad at the ref
That's why I keep a cross on my chest, either that or a vest
Do you believe that Eve had Adam in check?
And if so you gotta expect to sip juice from the forbidden fruit and get loose
Cole is the king, most definite
My little black book thicker than the old testament
Niggas pay for head but the pussy sold separate
Same bitch giving brains to the--'
I frowned looking over at Jesse who had turned the song down. He was looking at me as we stopped at a red light. I tried to turn the radio back up but he slapped my hand. We had a stare off but he snapped him fingers in my face making me blink.
"Whatchu know about J.Cole girl?" he asked turning back to look at the road as the light turned green.
"J.Cole is bae fawwkk you mean" I laughed.
"Mhmmm yeah alright" he laughed turning the radio back on. We drove in a comfortable silence as I rapped along to a few more songs. I sat up as we pulled into some place called Patty's Place. I got out the car and walked up opening the door and eating for Jesse. He gave me a look before pulling me inside with him.
I walked in a saw some girl who looked to be about twenty standing behind the counter. She smiled at us when we walked in and pulled out two menus.
"Hey Jesse, welcome to Patty Place, only two?" She asked.
"Yeah" Jesse said following behind her as she led us to a booth. I sat across from Jesses as he looked through the menu.
"Your waitress is Morgan, she'll be right with you" she smiled before walking off.
"I don't want to be late for my first day of school" I said looking up at Jesse who fanned me off.
"You not, school start at 9:10 and its only a couple blocks away" he said without looking up from the menu.
"So whats good here to eat?"
"They got every down south food you could think about"
"I'm not really familiar with down south cooking" I shrugged looking at the unfamiliar breakfast food.
"Ain't your Grandmother from Louisiana? How you never had down south food" he asked putting down the menu.
"I've never met her before, until yesterday, let alone any family"
"That's crazy, I know your ass was lonely up in Lennox Hill" he teased.
"Whatever. Whats a beignet? Sweet potato pancakes? Shrimp and grits?"
"Yo life gon change when you try them out"
"Sausage and hash brown casserole? Sounds nasty" I said making a face as I skimmed through the menu. I looked around wondering where the he'll was the waitress."Its actually good, it's hash brown with shredded cheese you can put ham or sausage with bacon and onions and shit"
"Doesn't sound bad, i'll get ham because sausages are nasty. Whatchu getting?" I asked looking at him.
"Same thing and I prefer Ham too..yo where the waitress at?" He asked looked around. My eyes landed on some ratchet looking girl who walked from the back fixing her shirt and running her fingers through her bright red hair. Or at least trying to, it looked like it kept getting snagged. She made her way towards our table and stood there smacking her gum and she pulled out a notepad.
"Jesse I slid you my numba last time, why you ain't call?" She asked completely ignoring me as she sat on the side of the table.
"I ain't ask for it so I didn't want it" he shrugged her off.
"Ya lil ugly ass, who dis?" She asked rolling her eyes as she turned around staring at me. I mugged her wondering why she was staring in my face.
"A friend of mine, yo Morgan you gon take our order or what?" he asked getting annoyed.
"Whatchu want nigga?" She asked.
"I'll order for both of us" he said looking at me and I simply nodded in response.
"Two ham and hash brown breakfast casserole slices and Ill get a Pepsi. Whatchu want to drink?"
"I'll have a--" I went to order but the Motrin interrupted me.
"Water. You should, need to watch the weight boo. Being fat isn't cute" she smirked walking away after taking our order. I counted down from ten slowly to keep myself from getting up and dragging her.
"Ignore her yo, she bitter as hell for no reason. Ain't nothing wrong with your weight"
___________
"That food was so good" I groaned as me and Jesse got back in the car.
"I told you, Mrs. Patty's recipes ain't nothing to play with" he laughed starting the car. I smiled not responding as we made out way to school. When we pulled up I made a face. I had never been to a regular public school and I usually had to wear uniform so this was new. The school looked run down and some girls looked like they had no home training.
"Not up to your standards Ms.Bougie" he teased parking his cat as he got out. I stale faced him as we walked towards the from doors. Girls were staring at me and turned to their friends as the whispered.
"I'm not bougie" I rolled my eyes walking ahead of him and into the school. I put my things through the metal detector and explained the the guards I was new so I didn't have an ID. I was directed to the office where the principal was waiting for me.
"Ameenah Clarke, here is you roster and a map of the school. I understand you have two family members that go here, Symone and Toni-Ann Campbell, I'm sure they can help you find your way, you have at least one of them in all your classes. Tomorrow you will be given a locker. Welcome to Centennial High" she smiled. I said goodbye and made my way out the office. I had never been to a public school before, let alone a school that wasn't full of only girls. This was going to be some school year.
What could possibly go wrong in sunny California?
