Ameenah
I shifted uncomfortably in my seat as my dad stared Jesse down at the table. Jesse had agreed to post pone our date and come over for dinner. I didn't see anything turning out right at this because my dad was unpredictable.
Symone and Toni-Ann were seated and felt the tension also. Mama Nita looked annoyed and my mother just sat there not doing anything. She was like my dads little puppet and it annoyed me. Ahmeer was on his way home from work so he would be joining us soon.
"So you're one of those little thugs?" My dad asked making my head shoot up. I couldn't believe he just asked something like that, he barely knew Jesses and he was judging him.
"No sir" Jesse chuckled lightly obviously feeling uncomfortable.
"What job is going to take you seriously with all those tattoos and piercings you have?" My father questioned.
"There's a job out there that God has set aside for me that will look past my looks. I have a high GPA, a job, I do a lot for the community" Jesse said making me smile at his answer. I gave my dad a low key smug look.
"Interesting" my dad said as Ahmeer walked in, he looked surprised by my mom and dad presence.
"Mama Nita y'all can start dinner without me, I'm not that hungry" he said staring at my dad for a while before leaving. I frowned wondering what that was all about.
"Anita I thought you were big in raising kids with manners" my father chuckled picking up his glass of wine and taking a sip. My mom shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
"Ameenah I don't want you talking to this hoodlum, he'll only drag you down" my mother said speaking up, she took me by surprise.
"With all due respect, I would appreciate it if you didn't call me out of my name" Jesse said looking annoyed, I felt really bad that my parents were talking to him like this.
"Mom can you please stop"
"No you're too young to be running around with boys"
"Like you weren't the same when you were her age, stop acting like you've always had your shit together Regina" Mama Nota said slamming her hands down making everyone jumping back in surprise.
"Mom this doesn't concern you"
"Another one of your kids doesn't concern me?" Mama Nita asked making my mom instantly close her mouth. I looked at them confused wondering what they meant by another one, I was an only child.
"I think you need to calm down Anita" my father said trying to lessen the tension but it wasn't going anywhere.
"No, I am sick of you two giving this girl hell, I may not have known her long but I know my grand daughter isn't one of them fast little girls like some people" Mama Nita said putting a emphasis on fast when she looked at my mother.
"What are trying to say?" My mother asked standing up.
"Little girl, who the hell you standing up towards like you bout to do something. I'm old but I'm still your mama and my belt still work"
"I'm tired of you treating me like I'm the bad daughter, I'm successful, I ain't strung out on crack like Sandra" my mom said making Symone stand up but Toni pulled her back down and they both gave my mother a stank look.
"No you're not but you think you so much better than everyone because you made it. All my kids come around and still call me, I just met my damn granddaughter a couple months ago"
"I've been busy with work, I don't have time to come to places like this"
"Oh places like this, but it's places like this where you send your kids that you don't raise, to live" Mama Nita said matter of factly. I frowned wondering why she kept saying kids.
"Mama Nita why are you even arguing with them" Ahmeer said returning to the dining room. Jesse sat there looking uncomfortable because obviously family drama was unraveling in front of him.
"I'm so sorry for this" I whispered giving his hand a squeeze.
"Disrespectful little boy you got here Anita" my father said with a smirk on his face.
"I ain't no boy" Ahmeer said. My mother stood between them.
"Ahmeer stop it" she said.
"Lady why are you talking to me"
Smack.
"Don't you dare talk to me like that little boy" she yelled breathing heavily.
"Mom!" I yelled out standing up. She can't just be in here hitting people's kids even though he was getting disrespectful.
"Ameenah sit your ass down" she said pointing to me.
"What is going on?" I said ignoring her.
"Tell her Regina" Ahmeer said crossing his hands over his chest.
