7 weeks later

Ameenah

"Happy Birthday sweetie" Mama Nita said coming into the bedroom. With my parents far away, I felt a little more comfortable coming back to the house. We talked things out and everything was cool between us again.

"Thanks" I smiled sitting up in bed. She placed a tray chocolate chip heart shaped waffles on my lap. I licked my lips excited to smother it in chocolate syrup.

"No problem sweetie, why don't you seem happy. It's your day today"

"Just a lot on my mind and prom is in one week and graduation is a week after that" I shrugged.

"Whatelse? Talk to me"

"College, my friends, my life in general"

"Well let's start with college, what's the problem there"

"Just nervous about the whole college experience and completely being on my own. Plus I'm only being granted scholarship money to pay for three fourths of my tuition. My parents no longer support me so, I have to get loans or something."

"Well let's just keep positive, at least your getting scholarship money to help you out. Some people don't get any and you know I'll help out you through college."

"Thanks Mama Nita, im trying to stay positive but sometimes everything is too much to handle."

"That's a part of growing up baby but you know you can also come back home if things get too rough" she assured me.

"Yeah and I don't want to be far away from everyone one but I want to go to a college that's right for me. I chose two schools in California so I'll still be in the state"

"If you spend live your life settling, trying to make people happy, you'll be mad at the world by the time you're thirty" she said making me chuckle.

"I know but I chose schools that I think will make me happy and everyone else too."

"Speaking of schools" she smiled pulling an envelope out from behind her back. I gave her a strange look and gasped when I skimmed the top seeing where it came from.

"Well read it out loud" she pushed with a huge smile on her face. I took a deep breath trying to calm my nerves.

Dear Ms.Clarke:

It is a great pleasure to inform you that you have been selected for admission to University of California, Berkeley, for the fall semester.

You were chosen from the largest and most competitive applicant pool in the institution's history for this opportunity. On behalf of our President, the faculty, and students - congratulations and welcome to Berkeley...

I stopped reading and let out a scream of happiness. The feeling that was going through me was overwhelming.

"They accepted me"

"Of course they did, if they didn't I would've went and blown that whole school up" she joked.

"I chose it because it was the closest. It's about five or six hours away"
